Post-Oscar win, JLaw gets dragged back to The Hunger Games

BY NATHANIEL ROGERS

The Hunger Games is not without its charms. Which is a very strange thing to say about a beloved bloody genre franchise about children murdering each other... but then *I'm* not the one suggesting it become a family theme park or inspire a cosmetics line. (Both very sensible and in no way inappropriate spinoffs!) As these things go, it is infinitely preferrable to the Twilight Saga. They're the immensely popular twin (non-identical) poster girls for the increasingly crowded subgenre of YA dystopian fantasies in which a mopey teen passively navigates treacherous waters (and woods) and love triangles with death looming all around her.

Both series trade on grand suicidal gestures ('I'll die of depression/eat the poison berries, if I can't have my man... I swear!') but at least The Hunger Games is self aware. It performs these defiant adolescent gestures with a sly and stately sense of morbid theatricality instead of self-pitying angst and is generally smart enough to express ambivalence about its content beyond the binaries of Team This Boyfriend vs Team That Boyfriend.

But, yes, when we return to the deadly adventures of Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) for HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE she is flip-flopping between Boyfriends.

Josh Hutcherson and Sam Claflin in 'Hunger Games' Bromance: VIDEO

Bromance

Actress Jennifer Lawrence talks with Marc Malkin about life on the set of the Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire with Josh Hutcherson and Sam Claflin:

"[Sam] and Josh are in love," Lawrence told me last night at the special screening of her new movie, Silver Linings Playbook, at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills. "It's the most adorable thing I have ever seen in my entire life. They're crazy about each other and they're inseparable. It's incredible."

Claflin was not in the first film. He has been cast as Finnick Odair.

Sam Claflin Offered Coveted 'Hunger Games' Finnick Odair Role

Hunger Games fans hungering for some news on the casting of Finnick Odair in the sequel Catching Fire will be interested to hear that a tribute has been chosen, and it's Sam Claflin, Variety reports:

Finnick was the most coveted available role in the "Hunger Games" sequel, and sources tell Variety that Claflin is nearing an offer. The character, who was 14 when he was selected as a tribute, is one of the youngest to have won the Hunger Games. Katniss does not trust him at first and is hesitant to make Finnick her ally, though he proves to be valuable after he saves Peeta from drowning in the Quarter Quell.

Claflin burst onto Hollywood's radar when he scored a key supporting role alongside Johnny Depp in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides." He went on to vie for Kristen Stewart's affections in "Snow White and the Huntsman." He's repped by CAA and Independent Talent Group.
