Gay Conservative Carl DeMaio Advances in California House Race

Gay former San Diego councilman Carl DeMaio and incumbent Congressman Scott Peters will face off in November after last night's primary in the 52nd Congressional District race, KPBS reports:

DemaioPeters has 43 percent of the vote, while DeMaio has 36 percent, with more than half the votes counted so far.

Former Marine Officer Kirk Jorgensen has 17 percent and surgeon Fred Simon has 4 percent of the vote. Simon and Jorgensen are both Republicans. The top two vote-getters, regardless of party, will advance to the November runoff.

DeMaio told supporters at the US Grant hotel downtown that he's calling on the Republican party to be more inclusive.

"San Diegans want the Republican Party in particular to return to its traditional roots in favor of personal freedoms in all aspects of our lives," he said.

He said to change the country, "we must first change our party."

DeMaio's office, you may recall, was vandalized last week. He has been attacked by NOM for a campaign ad in which he held the hands of his partner in a Gay Pride parade. DeMaio has also been attacked by Congressman Randy Forbes.

Vandals Strike Campaign Office of Gay Republican Congressional Candidate Carl DeMaio

Gay Republican Congressional candidate Carl DeMaio's San Diego office was broken into and vandalized six days before the primary, NBC San Diego reports:

DemaioOfficers arrived at the office in the 9600 block of Black Mountain Road in Miramar around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. They discovered extensive vandalism, including smashed computer screens and cords and cables that had been cut.

“Almost every cord inside the entire office – phone cords, communications, network cords, power cords – appears to have been cut,” said Dave McCulloch, the campaign’s communications director.

McCulloch said someone also poured water on laptops, printers and copiers, and stole gas cards.

No suspect has been identified, but it is believed the perpetrator entered through an adjacent office.

San Diego Pride Attendee Arrested for 'Lewd' Gladiator Kilt Speaks Out About Lawsuit: VIDEO

Will Walters

Three years ago San Diego Pride attendee Will Walters was arrested on grounds of public nudity for wearing a costume that consisted of boots, a black leather gladiator kilt, black underwear, and a black leather harness with chrome rings; no formal charges were ever filed. After his arrest, Walters filed a lawsuit against the city of San Diego, alleging violations of the Fourteenth and Fourth Amendments, false arrest, battery, negligence and violation of his civil rights under California's Civil Code.

Walters also alleged discrimination and his lawyers provided photographs from other events such as the Over-The-Line tournament depicting patrons wearing less clothing that Walters had been, but who received no harassment from law enforcement.

Since then, a judge threw out the lawsuit under the ruling that "The Court finds that plaintiff proffers no competent evidence from which a reasonable fact finder could conclude that Walters' arrest was based on his sexual orientation, or that it resulted from an unequal enforcement policy or practice concerning public nudity," and that the arresting officer's actions were legal because "as Walters' [leather] loincloth moved … the wind blew, exposing his buttocks." Walters is now speaking out about the dismissal and will announce next week whether or not he plans to appeal the decision.

Attorney Announces She's Running Against California County Clerk Who Tried to Stop Gay Marriage: VIDEO

Dronenburg

A California comsumer attorney says she plans to run against San Diego County Clerk Ernie Dronenburg, who last year asked the California Supreme Court to halt same-sex marriages and consider whether the Supreme Court's Prop 8 ruling applied only to the plaintiffs involved in the case.

San Diego's KGTV reports:

"I have a history of fighting for taxpayers and consumers, and I will fight for the taxpayers to make sure they get a fair deal," said Susan Guinn, who has also worked on health and environmental sustainability issues.

Guinn is married to her partner, has two children and is on the board of Equality California, but said gay marriage was not her motivation to run against Dronenburg.

She said what fuels her is the impact Dronenburg's challenge could have on his positions as the county's clerk/assessor/recorder.

"Elected officials can't play favorites. They have to follow the law … The perception of playing favorites alone destroys the integrity of the office. It destroys the trust in the office," said Guinn.

Gay Man Beaten With Baseball Bat In San Diego Assault: VIDEO

Dwayne Wynn

San Diego man Dwayne Wynn was walking around a residential area just after midnight when a car pulled up behind him and the three men inside got out. When one called out an anti-gay slur, Wynn turned and caught a baseball bat upside the head, shattering his eye socket. As the men continued to beat him, Wynn suffered three cracked ribs and fractured fingers and needed 18 stitches for cuts he received in the attack. Because the attack was so sudden and brutal, Wynn was unable to get a detailed description of his attackers or their vehicle. One detail he did get: he could hear his attackers high-fiveing each other as they walked away.
