PBS NewsHour did an excellent 8-minute piece last night on the re-emergence of the "kill the gays" bill in Uganda, slain activist David Kato, anti-gay evangelizing by American 'Christianists' like Scott Lively, Hillary Clinton's statement to the UN urging rights for LGBTs in Africa and abroad, and the dangerous political atmosphere for gays now.

The bill's re-emergence this year is a direct, defiant result of the recent Obama administration move to use foreign aid to push gay rights. "Gay rights are human rights," declared Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

How Uganda's legislation fares this time around is anyone's guess. As journalists "parachuting in" to cover it, our recent experience may well serve as a proxy for how the legislation -- or homosexuality in general -- has become a third rail nobody wants to touch.

Ugandan LGBT Rights Group Sues Anti-Gay Evangelist Scott Lively

The Center for Constitutional Rights on behalf of LGBT rights group Sexual Minorities Uganda is suing American evangelist Scott Lively "under the alien tort statute, which allows foreigners to sue in American courts in situations alleging the violation of international law," the NYT reports:

The lawsuit alleges that beginning in 2002, Mr. Lively conspired with religious and political leaders in Uganda to whip up anti-gay hysteria with warnings that homosexuals would sodomize African children and corrupt their culture...

...Reached by telephone in Springfield, Mass., where he now runs “Holy Grounds Coffee House,” a storefront mission and coffee shop, Mr. Lively said he had not been served and did not know about the lawsuit. However, he said: “That’s about as ridiculous as it gets. I’ve never done anything in Uganda except preach the Gospel and speak my opinion about the homosexual issue. There’s actually no grounds for litigation on this.”

Mr. Lively is the founder and president of “Abiding Truth Ministries.” He is also the author of “The Pink Swastika: Homosexuality in the Nazi Party,” which claims that Nazism was a movement inspired by homosexuals, and “Seven Steps to Recruit-Proof Your Child,” a guide to prevent what he calls indoctrination by homosexuals.

Scott Lively Says Gay Rainbow Flag a Sign of the End Times: VIDEO

Pastor Scott Lively delivered a sermon called "The Global Threat of Homosexuality" at Resurrection Life of Jesus church in Sacramento recently that warned that the Gay Pride flag is a sign that society is on the verge of collapse, Right Wing Watch reports.

Said Lively:

When you see the gay pride parade going down the street in the major cities, what banner are they flying over them? They're flying the banner of the rainbow. What is the rainbow? The rainbow is God's covenant with man never to destoroy the Earth by water again ...

...In fifty years we have seen this tiny group of people - they really only represent about two percent of the population - that has grown from being a reviled subculture to now having more power in the legislatures and courtrooms of the world than the Christian church does. In fifty years! Nothing has ever grown that fast globally, nothing. Not Islam, not Darwinism, not Marxism, nothing has ever grown that fast. Which shows you that this is a spiritual phenomenon that is unparallelled and that's why God has selected it, singled out this particular behavior to be the indicator of extreme apostasy, the furthest edge of deviance and the warning sign that things are in really, really bad shape.

Scott Lively, the Christian fundie fellow who may or may not have helped to put Uganda's LGBT population in mortal danger, has been Occupied. Yesterday, a whole mess of LGBT folk and their allies turned up at his Springfield, MA, coffee shop (Holy Grounds) to mic check the hate away. Watch the video, AFTER THE JUMP ...

Americans For The Truth About Homosexuality Calmly Discuss Getting Their Windows Broken

Early this month, unknown vandals threw bricks through the windows of a building where Americans For The Truth About Homosexuality was to host their "American Truth Teller" award ceremony. (The ceremony was to honor Scott Lively, a Christian who wants African nations to create state-run reeducation camps for homosexuals.) AFTAH's been freaking out ever since.

On an episode of Liberty Counsel's "Faith & Freedom" program entitled ""Anti-Christian Terrorism Erupts Against Christian Liberty Academy," Liberty Counsel's Mat Staver and AFTAH chair Matt Barber explained the score. Freedom is dead, gays are Nazis, gays are also somehow Marxists, and even now packs of crazed sodomites roam the streets, savagely beating on old Christian ladies.

According to Barber, groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center are "fanning the flames" of anti-Christian violence by calling AFTAH a "hate group." Said Staver:

It's the same thing that happened in the Nazi Holocaust, where they start to just demonize and stigmatize, and then at some point in time you don't even think someone's human. We look at [the Holocaust] and our consciences are shocked, but if you look at how it ultimately began, where they began to demonize and dehumanize them -- that's what's happening with these labeling of hate groups.

Said Barber:

I've called on Southern Poverty Law Center, the Human Rights Campaign, a number of other homosexual organizations to publicly condemn this act of ... gay motivated terrorism. So far, crickets.

What an ugly America Matt Barber inhabits! Where LGBTs and liberals all want to shatter Christian windows and break Christians' bones! (For the record, Matt, we don't.)

Scott Lively, Activist With Links To Uganda Anti-Gay Violence, Receives "American Truth Teller" Award

This is a proud day for anti-gay activist Scott Lively, because despite the best efforts of the "lavender Marxists" (that's us, probably) this evening he'll assume the stage at the Christian Liberty Academy in Arlington Heights, IL, and receive the "American Truth Teller Award" for his tireless efforts to combat the greatest "existential threat to Christian civilization around the world." (That's us, too.)

The American Truth Teller Award is presented by Americans For the Truth About Homosexuality. There's been some kerfuffle between the Gay Liberation Network and AFTAH, as it's called, because while AFTAH plainly thinks Scott Lively's a fabulous dude, the GLN thinks he's some kind of monster. Why?

Well, according to them:

Scott Lively journeyed to Uganda in 2009 with other U.S. evangelical gay bashers to stage a "Seminar on Exposing the Homosexual Agenda" even though homosexuality was already illegal in that nation. Lively helped stoke anti-gay animus by playing the "child molestation" card, asserting that gays are "looking for other people to prey upon, and that when they see someone from a broken home, it's like they have a flashing neon sign over their head ... male homosexuality has not traditionally been adult to adult, it's been adult to teenager. ... The gay movement is an evil institution."

It was following Lively's "seminar" that legislation was introduced into the Ugandan parliament that would impose the death penalty for so-called "aggravated homosexuality." All gay meetings would be banned under this draconian measure, and heterosexuals could be jailed as well for any advocacy of homosexuality or defense of gay people. Lively has supported this further criminalizing of homosexuality, even as some evangelicals like Rick Warren have distanced themselves from it. (Lively advised against death sentences for Ugandan gays, but only because it might result in "public sympathy" for them; he prefers forced "rehabilitation.")

Now, that might not be entirely fair. According to Lively:

I do not support capital punishment for any sex crimes, let alone simple homosexuality, which I view as a treatable behavioral disorder ...

Fact is, Lively's such a bleeding heart humanitarian that he doesn't even want jail time for homosexuality. Nope! Instead, he supports state-mandated reeducation camps!

During my 2009 trip I also addressed members of the Ugandan Parliament in their national assembly hall.  My advice to the MPs regarding the law they were contemplating but had not yet drafted was to focus on rehabilitation of homosexuals ... I urged them to become the first government in the world to develop a state-sponsored recovery system for homosexuality ...

Pretty zany, coming from somebody who likes to call his opponents Stalinists.
