FOX News' Roger Ailes and Shepard Smith Deny Shep was Demoted for Wanting to Come Out as Gay

FOX News demoted anchor Shepard Smith late last year after he told Roger Ailes he wanted to come out of the closet, Gawker reports:

Shepard_smithIn the summer of 2013, according to multiple sources with knowledge of their exchange, Shepard Smith approached Fox News president Roger Ailes about publicly coming out. The newly attached anchor was eager, at the time, to finally acknowledge his sexuality. “It’s time,” he told Ailes and other colleagues. “It’s time.”

Instead, Ailes informed Smith that the network’s famously conservative audience would not tolerate a gay news anchor. Ailes’ answer was definitive: Smith could not say he’s gay.

“This came up during contract negotiations,” a Fox insider told Gawker. “Shep wanted to and was ready to come out, and Roger just said no.”

Smith, one of Ailes’s first and most loyal disciples, acquiesced to his boss’s demand, and dropped the matter. But the discussion worried enough Fox executives to prompt Smith’s removal, in September 2013, from the channel’s coveted prime-time lineup. According to a Fox insider with direct knowledge of negotiations, Smith’s desire to come out was a large factor in the dramatic move.

Gawker, of course, has been trying to help Smith out of the closet for some time now.

Ailes and Smith released a statement to TV Newser calling the report totally false:

“This story is 100% false and a complete fabrication,” write Ailes and Smith in a joint statement. “As colleagues and close friends at Fox News for 18 years, our relationship has always been rooted in a mutual respect, deep admiration, loyalty, trust, and full support both professionally and personally.”

Don Lemon Tries to Outdo Ellen with News Media Selfie at Gay Journalist Fundraiser: PHOTO

NLGJA's Javi Morgado, Amy Robach, Tiki Barber, Ronan Farrow, Ashleigh Banfield, Jamie Colby, Rick Reichmuth, Sally Kohn, and FOX News anchor Shepard Smith all appear in a selfie taken by Don Lemon at the  National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association fundraiser on Thursday night in New York City.

Tweeted Lemon: "#Ellen has nothing on our @nlgja selfie."

While the annual fundraiser attracts both LGBT journalists and allies in media, Shepard Smith's decision to attend drew the internet's attention earlier this week when it was thought he might use the occasion to come out of the closet.

No such revelation took place.

The Blade adds:

A Gawker reporter with whom the Blade spoke outside the venue said Smith took a picture of him with his cell phone as he walked to his car. The Fox News anchor rushed past the reporter as he tried to ask him questions.

FOX News Anchor Shepard Smith's Boyfriend is Reportedly Strapping and Affectionate

Gawker called FOX News anchor Shepard Smith out in a post yesterday for a gin-fueled tantrum at a bar in NYC's Chelsea neighborhood last March, further shattering Smith's glass closet with a nugget dropped in the middle of its item:

S_smithSmith had arrived earlier that night with a straight couple and his own regular date, a muscular 6-foot-2 30-something white male, whom Bathtub Gin employees refer to as “his boyfriend.” Like most other nights—Smith frequents the bar, located behind a coffee shop on 9th Avenue, about once a week—the anchor’s attention fell on his date. According to Minskova and one other source, who have seen Smith and his date drink there on multiple occasions, the couple frequently holds hands and rests them in each others’ laps under the table. Nobody we spoke with, including several Fox insiders, knew the name of Smith's date.

Smith, who has been listed in OUT magazine's 'Power 50', inspiring calls by anti-gay conservatives for him to come out of the closet, is not out.
