Survivor's Spencer Duhm Explains Strategic Need for the Closet

Last night on Survivor: Tocantins, gay contestant Spencer Duhm was asked if he's interested in any of the women on the show, a question he deflected, and later explained:

Spencer"My tribemates are not aware that I'm gay. I haven't told them. Only because in the culture that we live in, there's nothing really to gain, or not much to gain from people finding out that you are gay. I don't like hiding it though. I would like to be able to have those conversations when we're talking about girls. I wouldn't mind, you know, makin' like 'Spencer, well what type of guy do you like' or something, but I know that that's not the best option for me in the game at this point, so..."

Survivor: China winner Todd Herzog revealed earlier this week that he and Duhm are dating.

UPDATE: Reality Blurred reports that Spencer apologized to Charlie Herschel for remarks he made earlier in the season about sounding gay: "I had completely forgotten about that interview entirely, so when I read it I was mortified, my jaw just dropped. I was yelling at the computer screen, I was like, ‘Shut up, Spencer, shut up. Stop talking.’ And when I read the stuff about Charlie I was so upset with myself, and so I immediately contacted him saying, ‘I sincerely apologize, I was a complete ass, I don’t know why I said any of that, it was completely out of line, I don’t even know you.’"

No SPOILERS (but warning, comments MAY contain spoilers). Watch it (starts at about 4:29), AFTER THE JUMP...

Survivor Winner Todd Herzog Dating Tocantins' Spencer Duhm?

Survivors

AfterElton reports that current Survivor: Tocantins contestant Spencer Duhm is dating Survivor: China winner Todd Herzog. Herzog tells AE what makes the relationship tick:

"We have such extreme opposite tastes but so much in common. He LOVES sports and I prefer the solo outdoors stuff, I like to dress super trendy he's into plain T's, I love alternative music he likes Whitney! (shhh) We both love to keep active and busy, we love trying new things and traveling. I was attracted to him the moment I saw him, mainly because he's got this confidence that pours out of him and a piercing stare that you can't help but notice so I went 'fishing'! Started talking with him and reeled him in! He's coming to stay with me all next week, and I with him next month. I'll be in New York for his finale in May and we are planning a huge trip this summer ... So hopefully things go well! I'm like a wall that usually wont let anyone one close to me, but he's doing a great job at breaking it down so I have high hopes."

In a recent interview with Reality Blurred, Spencer said: "I don’t like come across like most of the gay guys but I am, so I’ll probably be like—but then again, JP was gay and nobody knew that on the show; he was about the straightest I’ve ever seen. … But I won’t be Todd, I surely won’t be Coby. I won’t be Charlie. Holy shit. I talked to my parents and I was like, ‘Mom, do I sound like that?’ she was like, ‘Sweetheart, no, I would never let you go out in public if you sounded like that.’ Thank God."

Gay Survivor Contestant Spencer Duhm Glad He Doesn't Sound Gay

Spencer

In an interview with Reality Blurred, gay 19-year-old Survivor Tocantins contestant Spencer Duhm expresses embarrassment over last season's gay contestant Charlie Herschel and the 'bromance' he had with fellow straight contestant Marcus (a friendship which Charlie has claimed the show's producers edited to heighten romantically).

Survivor10Says Spencer of Charlie: "First of all, I'm not crushin on Marcus. I understand, first of all, you can do whatever you want, but, have a little discretion, he's straight. Like, leave the man alone. Ugh. It just baffles me. Every time he opens his mouth it's just like 'I love Marcus, Marcus is great. I feel protective when he's around. I feel nervous when he's not around.' It's kind of like alright you have a serious crush on him. This isn't jokin. Stop. Just stop. I'm embarrassed for him. I know he's gotta be sitting at home embarrassed, red-faced."

In the same interview, Duhm thanks God that he's straight-acting and that his voice doesn't sound like a gay man's:

"I don’t like come across like most of the gay guys but I am, so I’ll probably be like—but then again, JP was gay and nobody knew that on the show; he was about the straightest I’ve ever seen.
