Cory Booker Wins NJ Senate Race: VIDEO

Newark mayor and LGBT ally Cory Booker has won the special election to fill Senator Frank Lautenberg's seat in the U.S. Senate, defeating Republican Steve Lonegan, Reuters reports:

BookerBooker, who had been heavily favored in polls, defeated conservative Republican Steve Lonegan, a former small-town mayor, according to tallies published online by The New York Times, Politico and the Star-Ledger newspaper.

The tallies showed Booker with an 11 point lead over Lonegan with more than 90 percent of the votes counted.

Booker, 44, spoke to cheering supporters in Newark where he thanked them for turning out to vote against the backdrop of the 16-day government shutdown and partisan battling in Washington.

"It would have been easy to listen to this frustrating negativity and stay home today. But here in New Jersey, more than a million people rejected cynicism and came out on a Wednesday, in the middle of October, three weeks before we have another election, to fight the cynicism," he said.

"You didn't just vote, you believed that your vote and choice mattered," he said.

Cory Booker Tells Chris Hayes, 'My Sexuality is Not an Issue Right Now': VIDEO

C_booker

MSNBC's Chris Hayes asked Senate candidate and Newark mayor Cory Booker about recent remarks by his opponent Steve Lonegan mocking Booker's pro-gay remarks, remarks in which Booker revealed he told Twitter followers, "I hope you are not voting for me on the presumption I'm straight."

Replied Booker:

"The point I'm getting a chance to make right now is that we need to stop in America talking about anybody in the public realm besides what is important, the content of their character, the quality of the ideas, the courage within their hearts to serve others - that's what's important. And so here we have an opponent that is trying to say God-awful things and literally saying 'well I believe a guy should be a guy'. Almost like saying that you are not a man if you're gay. That is so extreme let's shine lights on this for a second...Being a man is about love. About kindness to others. About standing up for what's right. My sexuality is not an issue right now."

Mayor Cory Booker Responds To Claim That He's Not A 'Guy': VIDEO

Cory Booker

Mayor Cory Booker has taken a cagey approach to speculations about his sexual orientation, a method his GOP opponent for the U.S. Senate Steve Lonegan finds "weird:"

It's kind of weird. As a guy, I personally like being a guy. I don't know if you saw the stories last year. They've been out for quite a bit about how he likes to go out at three o'clock in the morning for a manicure and a pedicure.

So Booker is weird for not denying being gay, which means he isn't a guy, and is unmanly for enjoying good hygiene. Lonegan is all man, however, because that's what the race for a Senate seat comes down to in New Jersey: masculinity.

I have a more peculiar fetish. I like a good Scotch and a cigar.

So, in other words, he's a daddy with an oral fixation.

After hearing Lonegan's attacks Booker responded in an interview with HuffPost Live, saying that the fixation on what a man smokes and drinks completely misses the point of what being a man in America is. He also rebukes Lonegan's attacks on gays, saying,

So that kind of callous, bigoted, disrespect to gays and lesbians -- it just shouldn't be tolerated.

Rival Mocks Cory Booker's Pro-Gay Remarks; 'I Personally Like Being a Guy' — VIDEO

Lonegan

Yesterday U.S. Senate candidate and Newark mayor Cory Booker told the WaPo that it's fine if people speculate that he's gay:

Booker“And people who think I’m gay, some part of me thinks it’s wonderful. Because I want to challenge people on their homophobia. I love seeing on Twitter when someone says I’m gay, and I say, ‘So what does it matter if I am? So be it. I hope you are not voting for me because you are making the presumption that I’m straight.’ ”

The remarks were seized on by Newsmax's Steve Malzberg, who asked his homophobic opponent Steve Lonegan what he thought about the "purposely ambiguous" remarks, Right Wing Watch reports.

Said Lonegan:

It's kind of weird. As a guy, I personally like being a guy. I don't know if you saw the stories last year. They've been out for quite a bit about how he likes to go out at three o'clock in the morning for a manicure and a pedicure....Maybe that helps to get him the gay vote by acting ambiguous...I don't like going out in the middle of the night, or any time of the day, for a manicure and pedicure. It was described as his peculiar fetish. I have a more peculiar fetish. I like a good Scotch and a cigar. That's my fetish but we'll just compare the two."
