Financial Guru Suze Orman on Apple CEO Tim Cook and the Power of Coming Out: VIDEO

Orman

Suze Orman weighs in on the significance of Apple CEO Tim Cook bring the first leader of a Fortune 500 company to come out of the closet.

Says Orman:

"Tim Cook's coming out publicly will be the door opener for a lot of other people that so want to come out but they're just afraid to do so."

But more illuminating is when Orman talks about being pushed out of the closet publicly (in a 2007 interview)in the NYT:

"What was so sad about that interview that was done by Deborah Solomon is that was the time, and the interview was really supposed to be about my book that was coming out called Women and Money which was a really important book. Now she's announcing to everybody that I'm gay and what I didn't want was for people to think that I had staged that! I didn't want them to think that it was a marketing thing, and I never thought that I was in the closet. I've only ever been with a woman. Everybody at CNBC knew I was gay. I never hid it."

Adds Orman:

"But the truth of the matter is this. I was always afraid of that reporter asking me the question outright - are you gay? And then I would have to answer it because, how would I know how everybody would respond to that? So on some level she did me the biggest favor in my life because it was after that article came out that I was able to stand in my truth in my own power and I became even more successful than I had been prior to that...There was nothing negative that came from it, and the positive thing that came from it was me, and how I felt about myself. And I hope for Tim Cook as well - he's going to feel more powerful, a more powerful person is a better leader, a better leader makes a better company, and I hope it shows up one day in Apple's performance."

Suze Orman Destroys Conservative 'Scholar' on Marriage Equality: VIDEO

Orman

Didn't have a chance to post this yesterday but it's a must-watch clip.

Heritage Foundation Scholar Ryan Anderson has been making the rounds on media to tout "traditional marriage". The other day I posted a clip in which Anderson was blasted by Don Lemon, who called Anderson's assertions that same-sex marriage is not illegal "absurd."

Tuesday night Anderson appeared on CNN with Piers Morgan and insulted Suze Orman's relationship to her face during a discussion about marriage equality and the Supreme Court.

Anderson complained that SCOTUS was upholding "our constitutional authority to have a debate" on gay marriage, agreed with an assertion by Morgan that he would defend a convicted felon's right to get married over Suze Orman's and then continued with this bull-pucky:

"The primary function that marriage serves in every society is protecting the rights of children. Everything we've discussed so far has been about adult relationships."

Said Orman, who was far more calm and collected than many would have been:

"I feel compassion for you, and I'll tell you why. I know that you believe very strongly what you believe, but I also know that you're very, very uneducated in how it really, really works. And I believe from the bottom of my heart that if you really, really understood why the government does need to get involved, why it does need to be legal on a federal level, if you really understood that, there is no way that you would sit there and say what you are saying right now."

Suze Orman Speaks out About Gay Marriage Inequality, Demands Federal Recognition: VIDEO

Orman

Suze Orman appeared on CNN today to talk about how lack of federal recognition for their marriages harms gay and lesbian couples financially.

Said Orman:

"How would all the heterosexual couples feel who are married if all of a sudden the wife or the husband knew that upon the death of one of them if they have a certain size estate they're going to lose up to possibly half of that estate? They wouldn't stand for it."

Suze Orman is doing a Saturday night show on marriage equality and the financial reasons it is so important, at 9 pm ET on CNBC.

Says Orman in a preview of the show.

"Here I sit in front of you. A 61-year-old woman who has been gay my entire life. Who has been in a committed relationship for the past 12 years. And I will die in this relationship a woman who pays more taxes than most, that is a contributing member to the economy in more ways than most, YET, I am not treated equally."

Suze Orman on Same-Sex Marriage, Finance, and the 2012 Election: VIDEO

Orman

Think Progress LGBT posted a clip from yesterday's The View in which she said that to an ordinary person, it probably would make no difference whether Romney or Obama was in the White House, but she votes for Obama as a gay person because he will fight for the things that matter to her financially:

“Obviously, it is no secret that I’m gay. So it is very difficult for me to look at any Republican nominee and go, ‘that’s who I want in office.. My social issue affects my financial issue. And the reason why it affects my financial issue is that if I die, Kathy [Travis] — my partner — is going to lose 50 percent of what I have because we can’t be married."
