I think that those people are in such a tiny, tiny minority now with their point of view, they’re almost like the ones who still believe that the moon landing was staged in a movie lot in Arizona and those who believe the world is flat. ... That demeans them a little bit, but it's not that far off."

Good As You: "What the hell gives these folks the right to go apeshit simply because a company dares to advertise to the LGBT community?! Good God of fringe extremism, why cannot they not at least accept that we are 'sinners' with a degree of disposable income, some of which we like to put towards cars?! We know they think we're barreling down the Highway to Hell. Fine. Let them think that. But can't they at least respect the right of an automaker to try and sell us a car whose climate control features will help us brave the unbearably hot Lake of Fire?"

So I'm worried about this going on endlessly and to a large extent...the media, a lot of these cable networks, are enjoying this. It's what is keeping them alive financially. The fact that this thing is going on forever, back and forth every day, all night -- I don't think it's really helping the candidates or the political institutions."

road.jpg An update on that school expulsion case in Kansas I posted about yesterday: "A lawyer representing a gay student charged with harassment said he was 'hopeful that things will work out' for the student after an expulsion hearing Thursday. 'We're all wanting him to get back into school. That's the main thing,' said attorney John McKean. 'We're encouraged and hopeful that it will happen rather quickly.' Jimmy Iniguez, 17, a junior at Metro-Midtown Alternative High School, faces expulsion for allegedly harassing a fellow student in a school bathroom Feb. 28. Iniguez, who has been suspended since the incident, says he is innocent and is being unfairly accused because he is openly gay. No decision was made Thursday. District policy dictates that the decision be sent to the student's family by certified mail."

Andy Roddick Defeats Djokovic to Enter Dubai Final

Roddick

Andy Roddick is on a hot streak. Today he defeated Novak Djokovic 7-6(5), 6-3 to face Feliciano Lopez in the men's final at the Dubai Tennis Championships. Yesterday, he defeated Rafael Nadal, and after the match announced he'd be splitting from his latest coach, tennis legend Jimmy Connors. It's the first time Roddick has defeated the world's #2 and #3 players successively in a tournament.

Novak Djokovic Stands with Serbia on Kosovo Independence

Prominent Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic stood with the Serbian people who have been rioting since Kosovo's declaration of independence, which the U.S. has stood behind. He release this video message (translated by a YouTube commenter):

Hello to all of Serbia and all who are with us
This is the toughest of times in the history of Serbia
and I want to thank eveyone who has come here to this meeting
and to show the world that we are not small and weak,
that we are united and willing to defend what is ours
I am sad I can not be with you physically right now
and I want eveyone to know that my family and myself are with kosovo always
entire situation is very hard on me as entire history of serbian nation is stemming from kosovo
kosovo is serbian and shall remain so forever.

Meanwhile, during the burning of the U.S. Embassy some of the rioting Serbs had this message for CNN:

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet: Tennis Pros Gone Wild!

Tsonga1

After France beat Romania to move into the quarter finals of the Davis Cup on Sunday, Frenchmen Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet apparently need to blow off some steam.

Tsonga2_2 Tsonga3_2

And blow it off they did. Tsonga and Gasquet hit a strip club in Sibiu, Romania and quickly became the main attraction.

Unfortunately, the athletes didn't engage in a round of mixed doubles.

Djokovic Wins Australian Open, Vows Never to Wear Shirt Again

Djokovic

Of course the second part of that headline is simply wishful thinking, but that's how it looked after Novak Djokovic defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the Australian Open over the weekend to win his first tennis Grand Slam title and become the first Serbian tennis player to achieve such heights in tennis.

Tsonga_djokovicAgence France Presse reports: "His victory was the first Grand Slam final since the 2005 Australian Open not won by Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal with the top-ranked pair dominating the game, claiming the last 11 majors between them. 'I am so proud of myself and to be the first Serbian who won the Grand Slam title,' said Djokovic, who eclipsed Jim Courier as the youngest men's winner at Melbourne Park. 'I was trying to stay there with Jo because I knew that sooner or later with my style of the game I could get in control of the match, which I did in the middle of the second set. Today I was nervous on the start because I was in the strange situation of being the favorite in the final of a Grand Slam. It was dangerous, but I managed to cope with the pressure well and to win.' Djokovic and Tsonga rocked the established order by dumping Federer and Nadal out in the semi-finals to set up a decider unimaginable at the start of the tournament."

We look forward to seeing much more of Djokovic in the future.

Martina Navratilova on Gay Men in Tennis

In a lengthy interview with Outsports, Martina Navratilova says she believes she has lost over $10 million in endorsement deals because of openness about her sexuality, but doesn't know why there are no openly gay men in professional tennis:

Gasquet"I have no idea. I don’t personally know any who are gay, because none have come out to me. Honest to God. I have suspicions, but I don’t know of one who’s definitely gay. I read that letter to Tennis magazine [in 1994] from an anonymous male player who said 'thank you because we’re not all as brave as you are,' but I don’t know who they are. But I don’t know why. It can’t be because they’re all worried about endorsements, because most of them don’t get any anyway. And now, perhaps they’d get one because they are gay. It’s funny. I understand it in team sports because it can become a negative if the coach or the front office is homophobic and you might not get to play; let alone that your opponents might come after you. But in tennis, nobody can stop you from playing because of your sexuality or if someone doesn’t like you. If your ranking is good enough, you get to play. It’s very simple. So I don’t know why none have come out."

Maybe the $10 million has something to do with it.

I've chosen a photo of Frenchman Richard Gasquet to go with this post not because the player has said he's gay but because he's felt the need to deny it — twice.

Tennis #8 Richard Gasquet: Nope, Still Not Gay

Tennis3

Frenchman Richard Gasquet, recently immortalized as a terra cotta warrior for his appearance at the Shanghai Tennis Masters Cup, gave an interview following his matches there, Outsports reports, and reaffirmed the fact that he's not gay, even though he wasn't even asked.

Via the interview:

Q. Now your matches are finished. Do you still have any plan to go around the city maybe with your uncle or your girlfriend?

RICHARD GASQUET: My uncle? No. My girlfriend, no. I have no girlfriend, so I will try to find one, one Chinese girl. Why not? Why not? I lost 6-1, 6-1. It will be very hard for me tonight. I'm ready to lose, you know.

Q. Who is the girl watching your match with your uncle?

RICHARD GASQUET: Not my girl. I don't know. Not my girl, for sure. No, no, no, I have just friends. Men friends, but I'm not gay.

You may remember in July of last year that Gasquet, now ranked #8 in the world, denied he was gay after French magazine Le Point printed a rumor that he was having an affair with 46-year-old married French businessman Arnaud Lagardere. Said Gasquet at the time: "I was absolutely not happy about that. This question has come back hundreds of times, and every time someone turns up saying, Oh, I have evidence. It is just bullshit. Neither him nor me are homosexuals. It's absolutely obvious."

So if it's so obvious, why the need to repeat it?

Terra Cotta Tennis Warriors Unveiled in Shanghai: Federer, Nadal, Davydenko, Djokovic, Roddick, Ferrer, Gonzalez, Gasquet

In September I posted about the upcoming Shanghai ATP Tennis Masters tournament and the Chinese warrior statues that were being created by French sculptor Laury Dizengremel in the likenesses of the tourney's "elite eight". The warriors, of course, are meant to resemble the terra cotta army buried with the Emperor of Qin in 210-209 BC.

Well, the tournament got underway yesterday and the sculptures were unveiled. Here they are in all their glory. I can't say that the likenesses are necessarily spot-on (Novak Djokovic comes out looking a bit like Lance Bass) but the player portraits are hot. I've taken some close-ups of the Quentin Shih photograph for your perusal.

NC State Athlete Arrested for Performing Oral Sex on Teammate

A North Carolina State tennis player has been charged with "crimes against nature" after allegedly performing oral sex on one of his teammates.

BivensABC11 reports: "Details of the incident were released in a search warrant. There was an off-campus party last Friday at the apartment of one of the tennis team members. The player told police he went to bed around 3 a.m. Saturday and was awakened two hours later by Bivens performing oral sex on him. Police arrested and served Bivens with the search warrant that allowed investigators get a saliva sample. He was released on bond that same day. None of the tennis team members or the coach will comment on the incident though they know about the charges against Bivens."

The NC State athletic department says the player's status with the team has not changed.

Djokovic Delivers at Davis Cup Play-off

Novak

Serbian tennis players Boris Pasanski and Novak Djokovic became quite excited watching their compatriot Janko Tipsarevic battle it out with Australian Lleyton Hewitt at a Davis Cup World Group play-off match today in Belgrade.

Tipsarevic lost the match to Hewitt. The stakes are high in the best-of-five series between Australia and Serbia. Should Serbia win the series, they'll advance to play in the Davis Cup World Group next year, something the team has never achieved.

Djokovic has always been animated in his response to the game, but we're glad he demonstrates the same qualities on the court and off, after the jump...

Federer_djokovicHere's to the runner-up of the U.S. Open.

Novak Djokovic was close so many times to breaking points against the robot from Nike that it was a bit heartbreaking to see the Serb, in his first grand slam final, choke in the clutch time and time again.

But Djokovic is the next big thing in tennis, and the most entertaining athlete the sport has seen in years, and showed that talent off earlier in the weekend with a courtside performance of his imitations of Nadal and Maria Sharapova.

Good on Federer for making history with a 4th consecutive U.S. Open win and a 12th Grand Slam trophy, but last night we were rooting for the underdog.

Wimbledon Semi-finalist Richard Gasquet: It's Obvious I'm Not Gay

Gasquet

Missed this one back in April. But then again, at that point Frenchman Richard Gasquet hadn't leapt onto the Wimbledon radar.

This past week, Gasquet vanquished Andy Roddick to face Roger Federer in the semi-finals. In April, French magazine Le Point printed a rumor that 46-year-old married French businessman Arnaud Lagardere was having an affair with the player.

Gasquet responded to ASAP Sports: "I was absolutely not happy about that. This question has come back hundreds of times, and every time someone turns up saying, Oh, I have evidence. It is just bullshit.  Neither him nor me are homosexuals. It's absolutely obvious."

Over the weekend Federer struggled to defeat Rafael Nadal in five sets in the third-longest men's final ever.

Novak Djokovic of Serbia battled Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis for five hours to advance to a semifinal showdown with Rafael Nadal, below, in the fourth longest match in Wimbledon history. The 20-year-old cutie loves to take his shirt off when he wins -- and who's complaining? -- but was too tired to even do so after this epic (so I'll just post a photo of him from yesterday's win over Lleyton Hewitt instead). Roger Federer awaits the winner of Andy Roddick vs. Frenchman Richard Gasquet (who's also been known to go shirtless), which is going on now, in a tournament that's been surprisingly exciting given the state of the game.

Rain, Rain, Go Away!

Mauresmo
Not a lot of matches were completed at Wimbledon today, but not even the endless rain delays could save defending women's champion Amelie Mauresmo from losing to teen sensation Nicole Vaidisova in the round of 16  The French woman fell 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-1 as rain continued to wreak havoc at the All England Club. Nothing against Vaidisova -- she's exciting to watch-- but the more I see and hear from Mauresmo the more I like her. She looks so big and intimidating looking but seems to be a humble and highly sensitive woman in interviews, something that's great to see in the ego-charged world of professional sports.
Juan_carlos
Meanwhile, a resurgent Juan Carlos Ferrero, the 2003 French Open champion, was able to complete his round of 16 match beating Janko Tipsarevic, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (5), to advance to his first Wimbledon quarterfinals. He will next face four-time defending champion Roger Federer. You may recall Ferrero upset American hottie James Blake earlier in the tournament, a great effort from the Spanish clay-court specialist.

Because of my brilliant job, they want to do a cover on me. I'm being told by Howard Bragman that I'm too old and no one will ever want to do a cover." Bragman responds: "I'm not going into it. Aperoad.jpg Researchers converse with the apes: "The research we conduct here powerfully informs people about the nature of great ape intelligence. road.jpg Former View host Debbie Matenopoulos weighs in on the Rosie/Elizabeth feud: "The kind of discussions that occurred between Elisabeth and Rosie are real discussions that happen in this country. The View was the only place on TV where open, heated debate happened. By airing debates like that, regardless of who gets offended, it helps the country move forward. It forced people to question their own beliefs and, perhaps, open their eyes to other possibilities. Being polite and complacent doesn't create change. No one is discussing the fact that the fight was less about politics and the war and more about Elisabeth not having Rosie's back, as a friend. Politics aside, by not defending Rosie, Elisabeth was basically saying 'I don't repect you or our relationship. That had to hurt. That was someone feeling betrayed by someone she considered a friend."
