John Oliver's New HBO Show Breaks News A Week After It Happens... Or Later: VIDEO

John_oliver_2

British Daily Show correspondent John Oliver scored his own show with HBO called Last Week Tonight which premieres Sunday, April 27 at 11pm. It promises to cover last week's news every Sunday, unless it happens after showtime in which case it might break the news the following week... or not. It depends.

As a Daily Show correspondent Oliver has covered such topics as Boy Scouts' anti-gay policy and the defeat of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act.

The Daily Show's John Oliver Gets Frisky With The City Of New York- VIDEO

Frisky Business

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
may still be missing its traditional host, but it certainly hasn't lost a step with regard to its mission to hilariously and aptly comment on the current state of American politics. The show's interim host, John Oliver, has already taken on the likes of Florida, France, and the Supreme Court with relative ease. In this most recent clip, his attention returns to New York City, where he takes on a series of different targets in one fell swoop.

The segment itself centers around NYPD's "Stop and Frisk" policy, which allows police officers to temporarily detain and search anyone in the city with or without cause. In Oliver's own words:

"For years, opinion has been divided on Stop and Frisk with black and Latino residents of this city saying it's an invasion of their liberty and with white residents saying 'oh, I think I heard a thing about that on NPR'...It's basically like catch and release fishing, except you get to feel the fish up and shout at it a bit before throwing it back. Also, almost all the fish are brown."

Now, an NYC judge is declaring the policy unconstitutional, calling it "indirect racial profiling". She did not, however, mandate that the program be abandoned completely. Rather, she calls for increased oversight of the program by the federal government, and suggested the possible use of "body cameras" to assist with that task. This new combination of New York City and body cameras caused Oliver to temporarily direct his attention towards another target: Anthony "Carlos Danger" Weiner. Apparently, Weiner advocated use of said cameras even before this most recent judicial opinion.

"You heard right," said Oliver, "Weiner is suggesting body cameras facing out."

WATCH: The Daily Show Skewers Anthony Weiner/Carlos Danger, Seizes The Opportunity To Mock Both Names - VIDEO

Daily Show's Weiner

Towleroad readers almost certainly remember the unfortunately-named former congressman and current New York City mayoral candidate, who has a penchant for sharing sexual text and picture messages with young women via social media before getting himself caught and becoming the center of controversy. Not surprisingly, The Daily Show made sure to have some more fun at Weiner's expense on Wednesday, mocking both his real name and his online pseudonym, "Carlos Danger".

Penis jokes aside, the show's stand-in host, John Oliver, also made sure to call Weiner's bluff about "his pledge to stop sexting".

"If you hadn't chosen...chosen...to run for mayor, it would only be between you and your wife. But for the rest of us, the 'timeline' means everything."

Those wishing to appreciate The Daily Show writers' gift for wordplay can do so AFTER THE JUMP. Be advised, however, that it might not be best to do so at work...

The Daily Show's John Oliver Registers His Shock at the Zimmerman Verdict: VIDEO

Acquitted Development

On last night's The Daily Show, interim host John Oliver covered the result of George Zimmerman's trial in a segment called "Wait: What? How Could You Possibly... You've Got To Be Kid... There Is No Way... I Can't... Oh My God." If you don't have the time to watch the clip or can't view it on your mobile device, then all you need to take away from it is John's slack-jawed incredulity when he recounted:

According to current Florida law you can get a gun, follow an unarmed minor, call the police, have them explicitly tell you to stop following [the minor] and choose to ignore that, keep following the minor, get into a confrontation with them, and if at any point during that process you get scared you can shoot the minor to death, and the state of Florida will say, "Well, look: you did what you could."

The Daily Show's John Oliver 'Gaywatches' The Boy Scouts, France, Russia, and Pope Francis: VIDEO

Closet_oliver

John Oliver, filling in for Jon Stewart while he's on summer hiatus, is doing a bang-up job, and last night blasted the Boy Scouts for their policy of accepting gay scouts but banning scout leaders, calling it "a tragic end for the merit badge for closet-staying.".

He added, of the policy: "They're happy to welcome anyone with homosexual thoughts up until the age when they're old enough to act on them. That must create an awkward situation at Boy Scout graduation."

Leader: Congratulations Scout. Gay Scouts make us all proud.

Gay Scout: Oh, I'm happy to hear that. I'd like to come back as a leader one day.

Leader: You burn in hell, pervert!

In a special international edition of 'Gaywatch', Oliver also looks at Russia's ban on 'gay propaganda', Pope Francis and the Vatican's 'gay lobby', and the anti-gay marriage protests in France.

How is it that France's anti-gay protests (below) look so much gayer than our pro-gay protests?

Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...
