The Ladies of 'The View' Debate the Chick-fil-A Backlash: VIDEO

Chickfila_view

A heated discussion on The View yesterday over what ways are appropriate to go after Chick-fil-A over its anti-gay marriage donations and statements from COO Dan Cathy supporting "Biblical" marriage.

EmanuelIn related news, Salon's Glenn Greenwald, who is gay, takes on Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel over the issue:

It’s always easy to get people to condemn threats to free speech when the speech being threatened is speech that they like. It’s much more difficult to induce support for free speech rights when the speech being punished is speech they find repellent. But having Mayors and other officials punish businesses for the political and social views of their executives — regardless of what those views are — is as pure a violation of the First Amendment’s guarantee of free speech as it gets, and beyond that, is genuinely dangerous.

If you support what Emanuel is doing here, then you should be equally supportive of a Mayor in Texas or a Governor in Idaho who blocks businesses from opening if they are run by those who support same-sex marriage — or who oppose American wars, or who support reproductive rights, or who favor single-payer health care, or which donates to LGBT groups and Planned Parenthood, on the ground that such views are offensive to Christian or conservative residents. You can’t cheer when political officials punish the expression of views you dislike and then expect to be taken seriously when you wrap yourself in the banner of free speech in order to protest state punishment of views you like and share. Free speech rights means that government officials are barred from creating lists of approved and disapproved political ideas and then using the power of the state to enforce those preferences.

MeninoBoston Mayor Thomas Menino, whose letter to the company telling it to "back out" of Boston went viral earlier this week, is clarifying his stance:

“Originally, I said I would do everything I can to stop them.’ And that was mostly using the bully pulpit of being mayor of the city and getting public support. But I didn’t say I would not allow them to go for permits or anything like that. I just said we would do everything we can, bully pulpit-wise.”

Gay X-Man Northstar's Wedding To Be Announced On 'The View'?

XMenSaveTheDateDespite the fact that we all know that gay X-Man Northstar will soon marry his boyfriend, publisher Marvel has remained cagey on the details.

That will most likely change tomorrow, because the ladies of The View will be making a "major Marvel announcement" that "will have everyone talking," Bleeding Cool reports.

Meanwhile, DC Comics publicity veep Courtney Simmons spoke to ABC News about their "reintroduction" of a known character as gay and said the hero will be "iconic."

“One of the major iconic DC characters will reveal that he is gay in a storyline in June,” she said.

This lends some credence to speculation that the new gay hero will be Superman from Earth-2. Yeah, there are parallel worlds and parallel Supermen. It's a comic book, so they can get away with it, but DC had better not go too far. We know all what happens then.

As for the recent spate of gay characters in comic books, Matt Kane from GLAAD remarked to ABC: “DC and (archrival) Marvel are recognizing that there is an LGBT audience that has been reading their comics for years. When creating these fictional worlds it’s important to show the full diversity.”

Curiously, Kane's last name is the same as lesbian hero Batwoman's alter ego, Kate Kane. Coincidence?

Obama Says He Wasn't Angry at Biden for 'Jumping the Gun' on Gay Marriage Endorsement: VIDEO

Bidenanger

Here's another clip from Obama's appearance on The View (via Politico) in which Joy Behar asks Obama if he was angry at Biden for "jumping the gun" on his same-sex marriage evolution with his remarks on Meet the Press three days before Obama's announcement.

Said Obama:

"I was OK with it because it came out of a generosity of spirit. You know, when you get to know Joe Biden, he is the most honest, straightforward guy...We talked about it and what I said was I’m never gonna blame anybody for telling what they believe because I think it’s important for everybody in my administration to feel like we want to be disciplined, we want to make sure we're getting the message out there, but at the same time, on issues of principle … to go ahead and speak their minds.”
