Survivor buffs will remember Todd Herzog as the winner of the 15th season of the long running reality show, which took place in China back in 2007. Herzog became the second (and most recent) openly gay man to be crowned Sole Survivor.

Screen Shot 2013-11-12 at 9.23.48 AMMore recently, however, Herzog appears to have been struggling with a sad and very serious alcohol addiction and will be seeking an intervention on an upcoming episode of The Dr. Phil Show later this month.

As Dr. Phil puts it bluntly: "I've never talked to a guest that's closer to death than this one."

Survivor's Spencer Duhm Explains Strategic Need for the Closet

Last night on Survivor: Tocantins, gay contestant Spencer Duhm was asked if he's interested in any of the women on the show, a question he deflected, and later explained:

Spencer"My tribemates are not aware that I'm gay. I haven't told them. Only because in the culture that we live in, there's nothing really to gain, or not much to gain from people finding out that you are gay. I don't like hiding it though. I would like to be able to have those conversations when we're talking about girls. I wouldn't mind, you know, makin' like 'Spencer, well what type of guy do you like' or something, but I know that that's not the best option for me in the game at this point, so..."

Survivor: China winner Todd Herzog revealed earlier this week that he and Duhm are dating.

UPDATE: Reality Blurred reports that Spencer apologized to Charlie Herschel for remarks he made earlier in the season about sounding gay: "I had completely forgotten about that interview entirely, so when I read it I was mortified, my jaw just dropped. I was yelling at the computer screen, I was like, ‘Shut up, Spencer, shut up. Stop talking.’ And when I read the stuff about Charlie I was so upset with myself, and so I immediately contacted him saying, ‘I sincerely apologize, I was a complete ass, I don’t know why I said any of that, it was completely out of line, I don’t even know you.’"

No SPOILERS (but warning, comments MAY contain spoilers). Watch it (starts at about 4:29), AFTER THE JUMP...

Survivor Winner Todd Herzog Dating Tocantins' Spencer Duhm?

AfterElton reports that current Survivor: Tocantins contestant Spencer Duhm is dating Survivor: China winner Todd Herzog. Herzog tells AE what makes the relationship tick:

"We have such extreme opposite tastes but so much in common. He LOVES sports and I prefer the solo outdoors stuff, I like to dress super trendy he's into plain T's, I love alternative music he likes Whitney! (shhh) We both love to keep active and busy, we love trying new things and traveling. I was attracted to him the moment I saw him, mainly because he's got this confidence that pours out of him and a piercing stare that you can't help but notice so I went 'fishing'! Started talking with him and reeled him in! He's coming to stay with me all next week, and I with him next month. I'll be in New York for his finale in May and we are planning a huge trip this summer ... So hopefully things go well! I'm like a wall that usually wont let anyone one close to me, but he's doing a great job at breaking it down so I have high hopes."

In a recent interview with Reality Blurred, Spencer said: "I don’t like come across like most of the gay guys but I am, so I’ll probably be like—but then again, JP was gay and nobody knew that on the show; he was about the straightest I’ve ever seen. … But I won’t be Todd, I surely won’t be Coby. I won’t be Charlie. Holy shit. I talked to my parents and I was like, ‘Mom, do I sound like that?’ she was like, ‘Sweetheart, no, I would never let you go out in public if you sounded like that.’ Thank God."

Jeanrobertroad.jpg Survivor winner Todd Herzog talks to AfterElton about his win and certain homophobic contestants: "Jean-Robert was really, really, really homophobic. But I knew that by letting the girls know [I’m gay] they could feel comfortable around me and that I could make a tighter alliance with them. With Amanda, Courtney, Peih-Gee, and Denise being in the finals with me, I knew I needed to take the girls because the girls feel more comfortable around the gay guy. He had a lot of opinions on it, saying, 'It's wrong. It's a choice,' things like that. But I think getting to know me really changed his mind quite a bit, because he told me that out of a lot of gay guys he's met, I surprised him. He'd always thought that the gay culture was to sleep around and drink and party and do drugs, and he was shocked that that's just not me."

road.jpg Scientists on the brink of creating entirely new life forms based on entirely artificial DNA: "Some experts are worried that a few maverick companies are already gaining monopoly control over the core 'operating system' for artificial life and are poised to become the Microsofts of synthetic biology. That could stifle competition, they say, and place enormous power in a few people's hands. 'We're heading into an era where people will be writing DNA programs like the early days of computer programming, but who will own these programs?' asked Drew Endy, a scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology."

Blackholeblastroad.jpg Massive black hole seen blasting a nearby galaxy: "'We've seen many jets produced by black holes, but this is the first time we've seen one punch into another galaxy like we're seeing here,' said Dan Evans, a scientist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and leader of the study. 'This jet could be causing all sorts of problems for the smaller galaxy it is pummeling.' Jets from super massive black holes produce high amounts of radiation, especially high-energy X-rays and gamma-rays, which can be lethal in large quantities. The combined effects of this radiation and particles traveling at almost the speed of light could severely damage the atmospheres of planets lying in the path of the jet. For example, protective layers of ozone in the upper atmosphere of planets could be destroyed."

I just had to say goodbye to my last two competitors, and now the judges are telling me they want to see what else I can do. They believe I have a strong point of view, and an innate sense of style. When they found out I had never built a collection before, that was the moment I felt I might take the prize. I could feel the judges simultaneously think “How the f**K did he do that?” It felt awesome to know you are exactly where you are supposed to be. To be honest with you, fashion is what I know. I love playing with the shapes of a female body, wrapping her up in rich detail, following the curves a woman, using her body as the blueprint and working around it. It just gets me off!"

Did Instinct Magazine Spoil Survivor: China?

Don't contestants usually lose their prize money if they blab?

Todd_herzog_2The Malcontent picks up next month's Instinct magazine wonderings if gay contestant Todd Herzog may have let the cat out of the bag, considering he's labeled "Million Dollar Man" on the cover and Survivor: China hasn't yet finished.

The good news for Herzog if he really is the winner?

"If you were hoping to get additional clues from the article itself, you can quit hoping...After a couple of desultory questions about the only thing truly interesting about Herzog, i.e., his presence on a major reality TV show (”What do you think of the portrayal of gay people on Survivor?”), the writers bring out the really heavy artillery: Do you remember your first kiss? How in the world did you find out you were allergic to rabbits? We’ve heard you love the Spice Girls: What are your top three reasons why? Herzog’s most surprising revelation was that coming out can be 'scary.'"

So can almost losing your million dollars.
