As we reported last night, Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) defeated Tommy Thompson to become  the U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, and the first openly gay U.S. Senator in history.

Said Baldwin (at 3:25): "Now, I am well aware that I will have the honor to be Wisconsin's first woman U.S. Senator, and I am well aware that I will be the first openly gay member...but I did not run to make history. I ran to make a difference!"

Tommy Thompson Tries to Take Down Tammy Baldwin with Lies About Honoring 9/11 Victims: VIDEO

Baldwin

Daily Kos notes that this is "what losing looks, and stinks, like":

The truth is, Baldwin supported honoring the victims of 9/11 in nine votes, nine votes that Thompson of course ignores. But in 2006, weeks before the election, the Republicans offered a resolution that CQ Weekly said was "stuffed" with "references to GOP-crafted measures that they say improve national security."

Baldwin released an ad in response, calling Thompson's ad a "disgrace".

Baldwin would be the first openly gay Senator in U.S. history if elected.

Tammy Baldwin Leads Tommy Thompson in New Poll

Rep. Tammy Baldwin leads her opponent Tommy Thompson in the Wisconsin race for U.S. Senate, according to a new internal poll, the National Journal reports:

TammybaldwinBaldwin leads Thompson, 50 percent to 45 percent, while 5 percent of respondents are undecided. The Democrat's lead is not considered statistically significant because it is inside the poll's margin of error.

Thompson is considered the favorite in the race, thanks to his history of appealing to independents and moderate Democrats and his four gubernatorial victories. After emerging from a crowded GOP primary last month, Thompson led Baldwin in several independent polls. But President Obama and down-ballot Democrats have seen encouraging polling numbers in the wake of the Democratic National Convention.

According to a polling memo from The Feldman Group, Baldwin's lead marks a notable turnaround for the Democrat. In a previous internal poll conducted in August, Thompson led Baldwin, 50 percent to 44 percent.

Baldwin would be the first openly gay member of the U.S. Senate if elected.

Tommy Thompson Retains Staffer Who Sent Gay-Baiting Email in Attempt to Smear Tammy Baldwin: VIDEO

Thompson

Last week Brian Nemoir, the political director for the U.S. Senate campaign of former Gov. Tommy Thompson, sent out a gay-baiting email and tweet which contained a link to a video of Thompson's opponent, out Democratic Rep. Tammy Baldwin, dancing at Madison's Gay Pride festival in an attempt to mock her before she gave her DNC speech on 'Heartland Values'.

The Journal Sentinel reported:

"Clearly, there's no one better positioned to talk 'heartland values' than Tammy," Nemoir wrote in his email, which was obtained by WisPolitics.com.

The email included a link to a video of Baldwin dancing in 2010 on Library Mall at the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus with the costumed disco band VO5 playing the "Wonder Woman" theme. Baldwin, wearing sunglasses, dances on stage with the band and at the end hugs a dancer who is dressed like the comic book hero Wonder Woman.

Thompson was asked about Nemoir's gay-baiting by reporters yesterday. Thompson said he thought it was inappropriate but still retains Nemoir on staff "in a different role," Think Progress reports. "Somebody else has taken over communications with the press."

White House Won't Commit To Supporting Historic Senate Candidate

The Washington Blade's Chris Johnson spent some portion of his Thursday trying to get White House Press Secretary Jay Carney to say whether or not Barack Obama intends campaign at all with Wisconsin Rep. Tammy Baldwin -- a seven-term US legislator and out lesbian, now running for the Senate seat of the retiring Sen. Herb Kohl, also a Democrat. Mr. Carney refused to say.

Esq-tommy-thompson-081412-lgIf Ms. Baldwin wins her race, she'll be the first out gay person ever elected to the US Senate. But it's not going well. Her opponent is Tommy Thompson, who served as Wisconsin's governor from 1987 - 2001, before becoming George W. Bush's Secretary of Health and Human Services for four years. He's gaffe-prone and a little ridiculous, but his name recognition is hard to beat.

From the Blade:

Baldwin appears to be facing [a] tough battle in her race against Thompson because recent polls give him a considerable lead. A poll from Marquette University Law School published Wednesday found Thompson leading Baldwin 50-41, while a Public Policy Poll published the same day gave Thompson a 49-44 lead.

Mr. Carney did give Ms. Baldwin a full and enthusiastic endorsement, but downplayed the historical significance of her race:

“I think [the race is] very significant,” Carney said. “I think what is most significant is that someone qualified like Ms. Baldwin is running for that office and would make an excellent senator if elected.”
