News: Hate Crimes Bill, Baghdad, Chip Pickering, Morocco

road.jpg According to the Human Rights Campaign, the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Bill is in jeopardy: "Senate leadership employed a commonplace strategy with this bill. They calculated that the only chance of the Matthew Shepard Act surviving Bush's veto pen was if it were attached to a "must-pass" Department of Defense bill. But now that House and Senate are reconciling their versions of the DoD bill, it is under attack from anti-GLBT conservatives against hate crimes legislation, as well as progressive, pro-equality lawmakers who oppose some of the bill's provisions for the war in Iraq."

The breakthrough stems from a discovery by UK College of Medicine professor of radiation medicine Vivek Rangnekar and a team of researchers who found a tumor-suppressor gene called 'Par-4' in the prostate."

road.jpg Gay man in Baghdad: "There were many things that surprised me when I started researching the story of gays in Iraq. The first was that there were hundreds of men on the Iraqi pages of Gaydar. They are a mix of Iraqi locals, members of the US Army, contractors, even employees at Baghdad's embassies. Many, even the Iraqis, had their faces showing. At that point, virtually everything about Iraqi gays in the gay press was reported from outside the country - by Doug Ireland in this newspaper, later by David France in GQ, and in many translations by Ali Hili, the exiled leader of the group Iraqi LGBT, working from London. With gay, often underground contacts in Iraq, they offered a view of what is going on, not in any way a pretty picture. Some mainstream journalists based in Iraq, from the Los Angeles Times, for example, later followed suit. But I wanted to see things directly for myself."

Gauci was 44. Hurst’s testimony differed from some of his previous accounts of the Feb. 8, 2005, homicide, including one he gave his mother and sister during a recorded jailhouse conversation the night Gauci died. He said back then that he retrieved the knife and stabbed Gauci in the back of the neck because he didn’t want Gauci to have brain damage and because no one would believe that Gauci had previously sexually assaulted him, and was trying to again."

Blog Defends "Fabrication" Claims By Alleged Trent Lott Escort

Big Head DC, the blog that is claiming a male escort is behind Senator Trent Lott's recent abrupt resignation, has fired back at claims by the escort, Benjamin Nicholas, that quotes in Big Head DC's item were "fabricated".

TrentlottescortNow, Big Head DC has published his entire email exchange with Nicholas.

The exchange DOES NOT yet provide any real evidence that there was a relationship between Nicholas and Trent Lott, however, it's certain to be picked apart in minute detail, such as this remark:

Nicholas: "I’m a blogger as well, so I’m well aware that nothing in this world is ever truly ‘off-record.’ Trent is going through his fair share of scrutiny right now and I don’t want to add to it. All I can say at this point is no comment. It’s the professional thing for me to do."

Addressing Senator Lott as "Trent" seems to imply that the lawmaker was more than a passing acquaintance, but that's pretty much all I can glean from the exchange.

Big Head DC adds: "It is of course Nicholas’ way of framing his answers in these e-mails, i.e. 'no current affiliation with Lott,' referring to the senator as Trent, etc. that has helped lead many today to question why Nicholas has decided to backtrack. Perhaps he had promised an exclusive to another publication, and accidentally dropped the ball? Perhaps some of his current clients became frightened, so he decided to try to make the story go away? Or perhaps he has felt some other sorts of pressure. We do not know at this point. But, rest assured, we are working to find out."

The Latest on the Trent Lott Gay Escort Rumors

Trentlottescort2

Larry Flynt has posted a statement on his site regarding the rumors reverberating around the blogosphere of Trent Lott and his alleged association with escort Benjamin Nicholas.

The statement defines ambiguity:

"HUSTLER RESPONDS: HUSTLER Magazine has received numerous inquiries regarding the involvement of Larry Flynt and HUSTLER in the resignation of Trent Lott. Senator Lott has been the target of an ongoing HUSTLER investigation for some time now, due to confidential information that we have received."

Fantastic. Well, hopefully at some point one of these three - Big Head DC, Benjamin Nicholas, or Larry Flynt will give us some real information about what's going on here.

Is a Male Escort Behind Trent Lott's Resignation?

Trentlottescort

Mississippi Senator Trent Lott announced today he'll be resigning by year's end.

The decision to retire only one year after a re-election many people saw as a rebound from the Throm Sturmond birthday scandal that caused him to lose his Majority Leader post had some scratching their heads.

Others are already alleging that it's a pre-emptive resignation designed to lighten the fallout from a scandal that is just about to hit.

That's what the site Big Head DC is saying, anyway:

Via Big Head DC: "The boy happens to be real, and his 'stage name' is Benjamin Nicholas. One of the politicos Big Head DC has learned he’s alleged to have been involved with is the married Sen. Trent Lott, 66, who unexpectedly announced his retirement on Monday. Lott is well-known to have been against a plethora of gay rights issues throughout his terms in Congress. He was also good friends with Sen. Larry Craig throughout his time in Congress. Nicholas told Big Head DC today via e-mail that he didn’t want to go on the record to talk about his dealings with Lott, because, said Nicholas, 'Trent is going through his fair share of scrutiny right now and I don’t want to add to it.' However, e-mail and other records confirm that the two have met on at least two occasions. 'All I can say at this point is no comment,' Nicholas told us. 'It’s the professional thing for me to do.' In a subsequent e-mail message, Nicholas confirmed that another publication is working on a story about a 'possible relationship' between Lott and himself, but Nicholas also 'politely declined' an interview for that story. 'As I said before, Lott has quite a bit on his plate right now and I don’t really want to add fuel to the embers,' Nicholas told Big Head DC."

More at the source. Benjamin Nicholas, the alleged escort, who once wrote an article for Seattle's The Stranger newspaper about the importance of confidentiality in the escort business, is denying relations with Lott: "I will continue to offer a great sense of confidentiality to the people I see. I have not, nor have I ever seen or had contact with Senator Trent Lott. It's as simple as that. It never happened."

And as far as that "other" publication, Larry Flynt just told FOX he's "hoping to expose a bombshell" within the next week or two. We'll see, I guess.

Take it for what you will, but given that 2007 is the year of the hypocritical Republican, nothing would surprise me.

UPDATE: Larry Flynt makes an extremely ambiguous statement.

Mississippi Senator and Minority Whip Trent Lott to Resign [tr]

Mississippi Senator and Minority Whip Trent Lott to Resign

Mississippi GOP Senator and minority whip Trent Lott will resign his Senate seat before the end of the year, NBC reported this morning:

Lott"While the exactly reason Lott is stepping down before he finishes his term is unknown, the general speculation is that a quick departure immunizes Lott against tougher restrictions in a new lobbying law that takes effect at the end of the year. That law would require Senators to wait two-years before entering the lucrative world of lobbying Congress. Also unclear at this point is how Lott's seat would be filled. One Lott supporter said he hoped Republican Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour would appoint U.S. Representative Chip Pickerting to the post, keeping the seat in the hands of Republicans, at least in the short term."

Or, as Joe at AmericaBlog suggests, perhaps he just misses his friend Strom Thurmond.

Lott's remarks at Thurmond's 100th birthday party have not been forgotten, despite apologies. At that party, he referenced Thurmond's run for President in 1948 on the Dixiecrat ticket on a racial segregation platform: "When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over the years, either."

Lott made his most well-known comment about homosexuality in a June 1998 television interview, when he said, "It is [a sin]....You should try to show them a way to deal with that problem, just like alcohol...or sex addiction...or kleptomaniacs."

NBC says a formal announcement may come from Lott as soon as today.
