Vandals Strike Campaign Office of Gay Republican Congressional Candidate Carl DeMaio

Gay Republican Congressional candidate Carl DeMaio's San Diego office was broken into and vandalized six days before the primary, NBC San Diego reports:

DemaioOfficers arrived at the office in the 9600 block of Black Mountain Road in Miramar around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. They discovered extensive vandalism, including smashed computer screens and cords and cables that had been cut.

“Almost every cord inside the entire office – phone cords, communications, network cords, power cords – appears to have been cut,” said Dave McCulloch, the campaign’s communications director.

McCulloch said someone also poured water on laptops, printers and copiers, and stole gas cards.

No suspect has been identified, but it is believed the perpetrator entered through an adjacent office.

That ATLAH World Missionary Church in NYC's Harlem neighborhood, which has made headlines recently for its anti-gay church signs, was vandalized on Saturday, tagged with the phrase 'God is Gay', the NYDN reports:

JesusWouldStoneHomosA male suspect is being sought for spray-painting the retaliatory message on both sides of the sign outside the ATLAH World Missionary Church on W. 123rd St. near Lenox Ave., police said Sunday. The vandal struck early Saturday.

Pastor James David Manning in the past has used the sign to display messages such as “Jesus would stone homos” and “Harlem is a homo-free zone.”

Manning lashed out at the vandal when reached by the Daily News on Sunday.

“Gay people are just outright bullies,” he said. “I expected them to act in a very violent way.”

The NYDN published a surveillance photo of the vandal (see below).

Tennessee Chick-Fil-A Vandalized With Pro-Gay Message: VIDEO

Chikfila

A Cookeville, Tennessee Chick-Fil-A got a facelift last week after vandals spray painted a message on the brick exterior of the establishment. Sprawled across the drive-thru line were the words: "God [Loves] Fags & Chicken!" The perpetrators are unknown, and Chick-Fil-A did not file a police report; the restaurant simply had the words removed with a pressure washing treatment. Still, the message is troubling for some gay rights advocates in the state who believe it does more harm than good.

News 2 Nashville reports:

The Tennessee Equality Project promotes equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in Tennessee.

Executive Director Chris Sanders said no one affiliated with the TEP was involved in the vandalism and the TEP condemns it.

"It concerns us because our community has been the victim of that kind of violence and continues to be," he said. "What if during this act of vandalism someone was shutting down the Chick-fil-A or the cleaning crew was leaving and there had been a violent confrontation?"

Bias motivated vandalism and property damage is a relatively rare crime.

According to the TBI, in 2012 there were a total of nine incidents, eight were anti-homosexual and one was anti-heterosexual.

"We understand why people get angry about things in the news, things that happen and things that effect equality but there are very productive peaceful ways of dealing with them we think," Sanders said.

Kentucky LGBT Activist Chris Hartman's Car Damaged, Defaced with Swastika During ACLU/Fairness Campaign Dinner

Swastika

During the Kentucky Fairness Campaign's annual dinner with the ACLU on Friday night at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Fairness Campaign Director Chris Hartman's car was the target of an apparent hate crime, WFPL reports:

CarFairness Campaign Director Chris Hartman left at about 11:30 p.m. and discovered that his car parked near the Ali Center had been sideswiped while parked on the street—the mirror damaged, the side dented and scratched. He called Louisville Metro Police to file an accident report.

Officers noticed more. A swastika was drawn in black marker on a Fairness bumper sticker. Two Obama campaign stickers were defaced, too—"F--- You" written on one and devil horns and fangs written drawn on Obama's face on the other.

Police are investigating it as a hate crime, Hartman said Sunday in a teleconference call. He plans to contact the Kentucky Human Rights Commission and may also file a hate crime report.

There's no way of knowing whether the vandalism was targeted at him in his capacity as one of Kentucky's leading activists for LGBTQ issues, Hartman said.

On Friday, Governor Steve Beshear vetoed a bill that would have protected the rights of businesses to discriminate against gays based on releigious beliefs. The ACLU earlier this month had expressed concern that the bill might be used to undermine existing LGT Fairness protections for individuals covered by local statutes in Louisville, Lexington, Covington and Vicco, Kentucky.

The Fairness Campaign is now urging its followers to: Leave a message for "House Leadership" & "My Rep" to UPHOLD #HB279 VETO! 800.372.7181

Gay Couple Denied Use of Banquet Facility in Fort Worth, Texas Finds 'Burn Fag' Painted on Their Fence

Burnfag

Over the weekend, Steve reported on a gay Texas couple who were told by a gay banquet facility outside of Fort Worth that they would not hold their wedding reception.

Allen_hudginsBen Allen and Justin Ryan Hudgins found “Burn FAG” spray-painted in black across their fence last night, the Dallas Voice reports:

The couple lives in Everman, a town in Tarrant County located southeast of I-35W and I-20, less than 10 miles from Downtown Fort Worth. Allen said it happened sometime after 7 p.m. last night. Everman police were called and promised extra patrols in the neighborhood for the next month.

The couple has been together eight years and bought the house two years ago. They haven’t had trouble in the past. Hudgins’s mother lives four blocks up the street. The daughter of the town’s mayor lives on their block. After police took the report, Allen said they covered the graffiti with a blanket because there’s an elementary school across the street.

Allen told the Voice that they had been receiving homophobic threats on Facebook following media reports about the discrimination they had faced.

Boston Law School LGBT Group Vandalized with Vulgar Graffiti

Bostonlaw

The office of the Lambda Law Students Association at Boston Law School was vandalized over the weekend by someone eager to demonstrate the breadth of their potty mouth vocabulary, Above the Law's David Lat reports.

One Lambda Law member told the blog that it isn't the first time: "This seems to indicate a systemic issue that the undergraduate body has with racism and homophobia, as opposed to a reflection on the law school’s students or administration. I have never encountered anything but openness and acceptance at BCLS and refuse to believe that this recent incident was committed by a member of our community."

Dean Vincent D. Rougeau released a statement:

The cowardly act of vandalism that was discovered this morning is reprehensible and runs counter to everything we stand for as a law school. We are working closely with the Boston College and Newton Police in the hope of resolving the matter, which occurred over the weekend in an unlocked room in an unlocked building. I have attached a copy of letter that I have distributed to all members of the BC community.
