NFL Free Agent Michael Sam Invited to Veteran Combine, Says He's 'Getting the Hang' of Dancing: VIDEO

NFL free agent defensive end Michael Sam has been invited to the first-ever veteran combine, ESPN reports:

The veteran combine will be held March 22 in Tempe, Arizona, less than a week after Sam is set to start competing on the latest season of ABC's "Dancing With the Stars," which starts March 16.

Sam was chosen last year in the seventh round of the draft by the St. Louis Rams but the team released him before the season began. He was later signed to the Dallas Cowboys practice squad but then waived.

The Veteran Combine is similar to the one held for potential draftees but it is for current NFL free agents like Sam.

Following the announcement this week that Sam would compete on Dancing With The Stars, he released a statement on Twitter:

Very excited to be a part of @DancingABC. Football remains my unquestioned number 1 priority, however, while I continue to train and stay ready, I am ecstatic to participate in a fun, athletic competition like so many players before me have done. Filming this offseason is very flexible and allows me to be part of the veterans combine 3/22 if accepted or any other workouts. I’m looking forward to getting started with @PetaMurgatroyd and winning! Thanks for the support! #TeamSambatroyd

Paparazzi stationed outside Dancing With The Stars rehearsals caught up with Sam this week as he arrived to rehearsals with fiancé Vito Cammisano in tow, and asked him which was tougher, dancing or the combine.

"Both," he replied.

They also asked if he has nailed his first dance yet:

"I think it's a secret right now. It's different from football. Peta's (Murgatroyd, his partner) doing a great job. She's bearing with me. It's different than football, clearly. But I'm getting the hang of it. It's fun. Great workout."

And what kind of advice he had for gay kids nervous to come out.

"Be on your truth. On your truth."

Michael Sam Perplexes TMZ Cameraman with 'Game of Thrones' Wedding News: VIDEO

Mike_sam

NFL free agent Michael Sam and his fiancé Vito Cammisano arrived at LAX and were immediately confronted by an aggressive TMZ cameraman who began questioning them about their engagement and wedding date.

Sam was prepared though, and began giving the cameraman all the information he wanted. Unfortunately for the photog, he doesn't watch Game of Thrones.

Sam told the photog the couple was getting married in Westeros with Tyrion and Tywin Lannister, and is registered at King's Landing. He also told the photog the wedding date is April 17 (the premiere date for the show).

Said Sam: "Hopefully it will not be at the red wedding though. I will be very upset to be at the red wedding."

The photographer was mystified.

Replied Sam: "Maybe — gay people — you don't know our terminology."

Last night, TMZ reported that Sam had signed to compete on the upcoming season of Dancing With The Stars.

Michael Sam on Experimenting in College: 'After That First Time I Knew Pretty Damn Sure' I Was Gay - VIDEO

Sam

NFL free agent Michael Sam spoke this week at the 2015 Time to THRIVE Conference in Portland, Oregon where Ellen Page came out of the closet last year. The conference promotes safety, inclusion, and well-being for LGBTQ youth.

Sam delivered an inspiring speech which covered his youth:

"I grew up poor, I grew up afraid, I grew up alone. There was 8 members of my family. Out of 8 only 5 are still living. Two are currently in prison, the other two are working class Americans. I grew up afraid because the people I was supposed to love supposed to have my back, supposed to tell me that it's ok I'm here for you - I didn't have that. I grew up alone. The people who were supposed to be there for me weren't. I looked to football and sports to be my sanctuary."

Sam suspected he was gay, and drew laughs from the audience when he shared what is a very common experience for many in coming out:

"I pretty much knew when I go to college maybe I will experiment - I will see if maybe I'm not gay. Maybe it's a phase. But you know, after that first time I knew pretty damn sure I didn't like girls."

He also praised his fiancé Vito Cammisano for giving him strength:

"During those times where I felt like I was weak I had one person to tell me that there's no one in the world who can do what you can do. I think you were meant to do this - and this was Vito Cammisano my fiancé. Vito has been with me for a long time and actually it is because of Vito I am here tonight to talk to you guys. He is the only one who made me comfortable to be who I am, to be comfortable in my own skin. I owe him everything."

Sam said he had to live truth and not hide from who he is:

"I didn't want to be ashamed of myself when I come home and I see Vito and look him in the face and lie to myself - and I was like 'Vito I'm  gay to you but only in closed doors but I'm not gay to the world'. I manned up and a couple days ago we celebrated my first anniversary of me being comfortable with who I am and I'm proud of myself. I have no regrets."

Michael Sam Talks About Social Media Haters in Coca-Cola Super Bowl Week Spot: VIDEO

Cc_sam

In advance of the Super Bowl, Coca-Cola has released a new video spot in its #MakeItHappy campaign featuring NFL free agent Michael Sam. The ad features clips of Sam with his fiancé Vito Cammisano as he receives the ESPY Arthur Ashe award as well as images of the couple on social media together.

Vito_samIn the spot, Sam talks about the role social media plays in his life because he's in the spotlight, and the way he turns the hate messages and death wishes he sees every day into a positive thing.

Says Sam:

"One nasty email she pretty much told me that we don't belong - that we're evil. She is really the only hate message that I replied to. And what I said was, 'I am sorry that you feel that way, but even though you hate me so much I still love you, and I wish you have a great day.' She never replied back."

He adds:

"All the negativity that comes to me I channel to positivity. I have to prove the haters wrong. If I can use social media to make somebody understand and accept people I will do so. I'm not doing it for me. I'm doing it for them."

St. Louis Ram Michael Sam and his boyfriend partied in Vegas at the Venetian following the NFL draft, the Las Vegas Sun reports:

Boyfriend Vito Cammisano, who swam competitively for the University of Missouri, joined Sam, a defensive end from the college who was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round Saturday and was congratulated by President Obama.

A group of 10, including Sam’s agent and friends, were on hand as Sam was surprised with a presentation from Tao and a shout-out from DJ Vice. Sam spotted Richard Sherman of the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks at a nearby table, and the two athletes chatted for a few minutes.

Sam and Cammisano later headed to the DJ booth, where Vice stopped the music to introduce and congratulate the newly signed pro.

The NY Daily News has more on Cammisano:

Cammisano, a communications major, came out to fellow swimmers in 2011, Mizzou’s student newspaper reported.

“He’s been a pleasant, pleasant boy all his life,” Cammisano’s aunt, Cathy Nigro, said of her nephew.

“I was very proud of them both,” Nigro said of the kiss. “I think the whole family is.”

Nigro said she’s met Sam, liked him very much and called him “a great athlete.”

Cammisano’s Facebook page says he attended Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, Mo., and worked as an assistant in the University of Missouri’s office of disability services. It says he works as an intern at a large radio station operator.
