Volcanic Vent Opens, Spews Steam Near Rome's Airport: VIDEO

Rome_geyser

A new geyser opened over the weekend near the perimeter fence of Rome's Fiumicino airport less than 1000 yards from the end of a runway, the Telegraph reports:

Spectators gathered around the smoking crater, which measured about six feet wide and three feet deep, before firefighters and vulcanologists arrived to seal off the roundabout to prevent inhalation of the gas, suspected to be a cocktail of carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide and methane. Tests are now underway. While initial reports suggested the gas came from rotting organic matter trapped underground, one expert said volcanic activity was more likely.

“From Mount Etna in Sicily up to the Alban hills around Rome there is a good deal of underground volcanic activity,” Alberto Basili, a seismologist at the Italian National Institute for Geophysics and Vulcanology, told the Daily Telegraph.

Alaskan Volcano Seen Erupting from Space: PHOTOS

Pavlof

Astronauts aboard the ISS took some incredible shots of Alaska's Pavlof volcano, which began erupting on May 13, 2013, and has been disrupting air travel up near the Aleutian arc where it is situated, approximately 625 miles south of Anchorage.

When photograph ISS036-E-2105 (top) was taken, the space station was about 475 miles south-southeast of the volcano (49.1° North latitude, 157.4° West longitude). The volcanic plume extended southeastward over the North Pacific Ocean.

Man Risks Incineration at the Edge of a Volcano: VIDEO

3_volcano

Despite the horrendously huge watermark, here's some pretty incredible footage.

Geoff Mackley writes:

The Most Incredible Volcano Video ever shot ! Geoff Mackley, Bradley Ambrose, Nathan Berg, after an epic struggle with the weather for 35 days, we became the first people ever to get this close to Marum Volcano's famed lava lake on Ambrym Island, Vanuatu. Coming within 30 metres of the lava lake down a watercourse, it was possible to stand the heat for only 6 seconds. With Fire Brigade breathing apparatus and heat proof proximity suit it was possible to stand on the very edge and view the incredible show for over 40 minutes.

As Gizmodo notes, Mackley made a similar trip back in 2010. I've posted both clips.
