Archbishop of Wales Says He Would Consecrate a Gay Bishop
Dr. Barry Morgan, the Archbishop of Wales, said over the weekend that he was in agreement with gay Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson about gay clergy and that he would consecrate a gay candidate for bishop if that candidate was qualified:
"If there was a candidate who was in a homosexual relationship that would be discussed. It would be my job to say 'you have to vote according to your conscience, but I’m duty bound to tell you that it will have repercussions as far as the wider Anglican communion is concerned’. If they said they want to do that well so be it. If a priest had a partner and someone nominated them that wouldn’t be a bar to them becoming a bishop."
Morgan's comments come on the eve of this year's Anglican Lambeth Conference from which Robinson has been excluded. As I posted earlier, Robinson's presence has already been noted by a heckler during a sermon over the weekend.

Gay Rapper Qboy Fights Homophobic Bullying in Wales
Gay UK hip-hop artist Qboy was speaking out about being gay back in April 2004 when I first posted about him, but now he's involved with Excellence Centre Wales, "an organisation that gathers and shares excellence, information and good practice on equality and human rights as well as for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people" according to 24Dash, to raise awareness and help prevent bullying in schools:
"Rising star, rapper and DJ, QBoy speaks about his own experiences of homophobic bullying at school in his tracks and is committed to raising awareness of the issue. He said: 'When being bullied as a teenager never did I imagine it would play such an important part of my dream career of being a performer. It feels good to turn my unhappy experience into something positive and hopefully help other people going through similar experiences. 'I applaud the schools who are actively trying to combat and deal with the homophobia that is so evident in today's classrooms and playgrounds. Homophobia doesn't just affect those who are gay or perceived to be gay, it affects all of us and it is a problem we all need to help resolve. In the end, every one of us strives to live in a society which is happy and accepting of one another.'"
The group is doing its work in Cardiff, Wales, but it's certainly a message that would translate over here.

Frank has introduced legislation in previous years to allow the use of 'medical marijuana,' although the bills never made it out of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Asked by [Bill] Maher as to why he would push a pot decriminalization bill now, Frank said the American public has already decided that personal use of marijuana is not a problem. 'I now think it's time for the politicians to catch up to the public,' Frank said. 'The notion that you lock people up for smoking marijuana is pretty silly. 'Christian' Says Gay Former Pop Star Ian Watkins like Jeffrey Dahmer
Ian Watkins (pictured, formerly of the British pop band Steps), who came out publicly in January 2007, was recently filming a special on Wales for the BBC and was confronted by a "Christian campaigner" who told him that being gay is no better than being a serial killer, the BBC reports:
"Christian Voice director, Stephen Green, told Watkins his lifestyle was 'sinful', and made him no better than US mass murderer Jeffrey Dahmer. Mr Green also told the former Celebrity Big Brother contestant he could become straight if he wanted to. The comparison to Dahmer who was jailed for life in 1992 after the Wisconsin trial heard evidence of his cannibalism after murdering his victims came when Watkins told Mr Green he was 'completely happy' being gay and that he was in a loving relationship. Mr Green added: 'Jeremy (sic) Dahmer was happy murdering people, does that make it right?' The comment shocked Watkins and he responded: 'So, being completely happy and at one with yourself, and being in a happy, loving relationship is the same as murdering somebody?' But Mr Green stuck to his guns during the exchange: 'Sin is sin...in the eyes of God, sin is sin...' When Watkins referred to people being born gay, Mr Green told him: 'I don't believe anybody is born homosexual. God wouldn't allow anybody to be born homosexual.' Watkins, who came out when he was in the Big Brother house alongside Shilpa Shetty and Jade Goody, says he was 'absolutely flabbergasted' by the comments."
Green obviously attended the Sally Kern school of lower education.

Cardinal Follows Pope's Lead, Condemning Gays in Peace Message
Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, England and Wales' Roman Catholic Spiritual leader, followed the lead of his superior in the Vatican, whose peace message for New Year's I wrote about in mid-December. In that speech, which Pope Benedict gave as promised on New Year's Day, the Pope ranked same-sex marriage with nuclear arms proliferation, environmental pollution, economic inequality, abortion, and birth control as threats to world peace.
Murphy O'Connor did the same, according to Ekklesia:
"He claimed that most parents did not want their children to be taught that marriage was nothing more than 'one lifestyle choice among many', urged parents to bring God into their homes, and said the 'traditional family' remained central to the well-being of society but was being dangerously eroded. Society was slowly waking up to the dangers of climate change and pollution for the planet, said the Cardinal, but seemed largely oblivious to the destruction of the family. His remarks will be criticised by those who will see them as, in part, a thinly-veiled assault on equality legislation for homosexuals and others, which the Church has rigorously opposed in 2007, claiming that they undermine marriage - a contention rejected as simplistic and one-sided by many others, Christian and otherwise."

Rugby Player Gavin Henson: Bullies Should Not Be Tolerated
We haven't checked in with Welsh rugby player Gavin Henson in a while. Henson, who has more attention paid to his various hairstyles than any European athlete aside from Beckham, has been absent from rugby for more than a year due to suspension and injury, but appears to be returning to the spotlight. He's still very well known in Wales (partly due to his girlfriend Charlotte Church, with whom he had a baby), and so his recent endorsement of a new anti-bullying campaign has not gone unnoticed.
Said Henson: "It’s very important that we protect children from bullying; no child should be made to feel singled out and everyone has a right to be themselves, which is why I am supporting the defeat bullying campaign. Nobody at the Ospreys likes bullies. I’m lucky because it’s a great place to be and all the boys in the squad feel the same as I do about bullying – bullies should not be tolerated. Children who are being bullied should talk to someone who they feel comfortable with. If they don’t feel they have anyone to talk to they should definitely call ChildLine, a service provided by NSPCC Cymru/Wales who can offer help and advice, even if they just want a friendly person to talk to."

Pariah wins £25,000 Iris Gay and Lesbian Film Fest Prize
Tennessee native Dee Rees, an MFA candidate at NYU, won the Iris Prize, a £25,000 award thought to be the largest of its kind for a gay and lesbian film festival. Rees won for her short film Pariah, about the coming-of-age of a lesbian teen. There was a shortlist of 30 other contenders.
The BBC reports: "Announcing the winner of the prize at the awards show at Cardiff's Cineworld, Frances Hendron, jury chair said: 'This film was impactful. It is a personal story told in a universal manner. The film maker displays excellent film making skills from the direction of the actors, the integral music sound track and a natural control of its subject.'"

John Barrowman Appears at Cardiff, Wales Mardi Gras with Partner
Torchwood star John Barrowman made an appearance over the weekend at the Lesbian & Gay Mardi Gras in Cardiff, Wales where he has a home with his partner, British architect Scott Gill.
Barrowman thrilled the crowd by getting up on the main stage and instructing the audience how to deal with some anti-gay protestors who were outside the festival.
Said Barrowman: "My partner and I - Scott step up - this is my partner Scott. We had our civil partnership in the St. David's hotel in beautiful Cardiff, and are proud to be gay and in Cardiff! On your way out, those people who are protesting with those signs about saying how we're all evil and bad - when you walk past them, just tell them that they're the evil ones - and bless them. Also, I think if we can give a big cheer and round of applause for the police, because they're doing a great job keeping jerks like that out. Good on 'em!"
The ninth annual Pride event attracted 40,000 people, according to organizers.

Inquest: Boy Killed Himself on Train Track After Gay Bullying
Jonathan Reynolds, a 15-year-old in South Wales, was killed by a train after he laid on the tracks to commit suicide in January 2006 because he had been bullied in school over his sexuality, an inquest heard last week. According to the Times Online, Reynolds had confided to a friend he was gay just weeks earlier.
The paper reports: "Moments before he died, Jonathan Reynolds sent harrowing text messages to his family telling that them they were not to blame for what was about to happen. A passer-by saw him holding the mobile as he lay down on the tracks in front of a train travelling at 85mph (136km/h) through Pencoed railway station near Bridgend, South Wales. In his last text message sent to his father, Mark, and his 14-year-old sister, Samantha, the teenager wrote: 'Tell everyone that this is for anybody who eva said anything bad about me, see I do have feelings too. Blame the people who were horrible and injust 2 me. This is because of them, I am human just like them. I hope they rot in hell 4 what they made me do. They know who they are.' He added: 'None of you blame urself mum, dad, Sam and the rest of my family. This is not because of you.' A postmortem examination showed that Jonathan, who achieved a grade A in his GCSE Welsh oral exam on the day he died, had a blood-alcohol level three and a half times the legal limit for driving."
A man walking his dog was witness to Reynolds' final moments: “He had a mobile in his hand. I called out and said, ‘Get off the track’. He looked at me and just put his head back down and I saw him walking across the track. I was walking across the bridge and he was walking across the track and he seemed to lie down and the train came.”

John Barrowman Gets Cheeky with OK Magazine
OK Magazine trailed John Barrowman on the day of his civil partnership to Scott Gill. The couple wed in late December in Cardiff, Wales.
Barrowman wore a kilt to the ceremony and was captured flashing his Torchwood castmate Eve Myles. Said Barrowman: "We wanted to be ourselves, and so I flashed Eve. And like a true Scot, I had nothing on underneath."
He also told the magazine about how he met his partner of 13 years: "I was doing a play in Chichester and Scott was brought down to see the play by a mutual friend of ours. He told Scott: 'You've got to see the guy in the play, he's naked for the first seven minutes!' So Scott certainly knew what he was getting!"
On relationships: "Relationships are work. We've had clashes but what I have learned from my parents is never go to bed angry...We are a couple who will get through any humps or bumps in the road. But we are not in an open relationship...If we ever split, we're rational. We'll talk about it. But I don't have as much money as Paul McCartney and I'm not married to a gold-digger."
On George Michael and open relationships: "People cruise and I don't have a problem with George Michael doing it, because it is part of the culture. The press see it as salacious, but straight people cruise too, they have sex in public. But it's not a big news story because it's heterosexual. But I want people to see that there are other aspects to a gay life. It's important for gay relationships to be recognised. Then men won't have to cruise parks for sex or be bludgeoned to death on Clapham Common by gay haters for cruising in dark places because they are scared to be seen being intimate with each other."
On kids: "I would love kids. I have a particular celebrity friend who says she will have a child with me. But there's nothing in the works just yet! We would adopt a child too, probably a young child or teenager. I'm a big kid myself. I'm a big kid in a man's body."

Bid to Stop Gay Rights Laws Fails in the UK

Approximately 1,000 demonstrators held their anti-gay rally outside Parliament in London last night, hoping to sway a vote in the House of Lords to block the laws, which forbid discrimination based on sexual orientation, and are already in place in Northern Ireland.
The laws were upheld on Tuesday by a margin of three to one, 199 votes to 68.
A debate lasting nearly two hours was impassioned from both sides, according to the Independent:
Lord Tebbit said: "These regulations would leave perfectly innocent people in fear of legal action from the fanatical wings of the lesbian, homosexual, gay pressure groups. Whatever the intention of those who drafted the regulations, they are bound to create not only a shadow, or umbra of prohibition, but a vastly-wider penumbra of the fear of prosecution."But Lord Smith, the former Labour culture secretary, launched an impassioned defence of the protections offered by the rules. He attacked critics of the regulations, telling peers: "What they are arguing for is quite simply the right to discriminate and the right to harass. These arguments are being made in the name of Christianity. I find that very difficult to understand. "People have the right to believe that homosexuality is somehow wrong. I believe very strongly that people have a right to hold views that may be bigoted or discriminatory, but I do not believe they have the right to put their beliefs into action."
Anti-gay campaigners say the rules are a threat to their "freedom of conscience" because they would be forced to act despite their religious beliefs.
Thomas Cordrey of the Lawyers' Christian Fellowship, the organizers of the rally, told Reuters: "Christians have no desire to discriminate unjustly on the grounds of sexual orientation, but they cannot and must not be forced to actively condone and promote sexual practices which the Bible teaches are wrong."
He also told the news outlet that the group was not homophobic. However, see the top photo and ask yourself if you agree with him.
The laws, which went into effect in Northern Ireland on the first of the year, are to take effect in England and Wales in April.
Said Andrew Copson, of the British Humanist Association: "[Discrimination] would not be acceptable in the areas of race, disability, age or religion or belief, and is not acceptable here. Either we hold human rights to be universal or we do not."

Former Steps Singer Ian Watkins: I'm Gay
Ian Watkins, a Welsh singer from the former British pop group Steps, has decided 2007 is the year to come out of the closet. Steps split up in 2001 but tonight he's set to join the cast of the UK's Celebrity Big Brother.
Watkins (seen here in a costume for Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat), came out to British tabloid The Sun:
"I come from a small valley in Wales and it just wasn’t the thing to do to be gay. It’s a bit of a cliche — but I was the only gay in the village. People get married at 21 where I come from and if you don’t do that, you’re questioned. You certainly don’t come to London and become a pop tart. I was very different and it was very hard...I could never have done this years ago, never. I was still coming to terms with it myself. But I’m comfortable with who I am now and I want everyone to know. I feel like a weight’s coming off my shoulders. It’s nice. I’m glad I’m doing this and feel it’s the right time."
Watkins says that he recently ended a ten-year affair with the manager of Steps, Tim Byrne. He has been out to close friends and family for nine years.
Added the singer: "I’ve always felt a bit different, even as a very small child. At school people would tease me and call me names — ‘queer’ and that — and I started to question whether that was right. I can’t really pinpoint when exactly I knew I was gay...You don’t just wake up one morning and have a lightbulb moment and think, ‘I’m gay’. That’s why I never said anything earlier — I didn’t know what I was. These days my friends’ kids are openly gay at 16 or 17 and I think that’s great. I wish I could have done but I never had the courage."
We wish Ian the best of luck on his new journey. Who's next?

Scottish-American Actor John Barrowman in Civil Partnership
Scottish-American actor John Barrowman tied the knot with Scott Gill, his partner of 16 years, in a civil partnership ceremony yesterday St David's Hotel and Spa in Cardiff Bay, Wales. Approximately forty friends and family witnessed the event, according to reports.
Barrowman stars as Captain Jack Harkness in the BBC Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood.
There was no comment from the couple, but Barrowman has commented previously on his intention to have his relationship legally recognized: "Our relationship was legitimate for us a long time ago. We have been spending most of our time together. The ceremony is because we have the right to be recognised as a couple. It forces people who don’t want to recognise same-sex relationships as legitimate, it forces them to do so."
Barrowman wore a kilt to the ceremony in honor of his Scottish roots. Although raised in Joliet, Illinois, he was born in Glasgow.
Best wishes to the happy couple.

Jonesing for a Record in Wales
On Friday night, 1,224 people with the last name of Jones congregated in Cardiff, Wales to set a Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of folks with the same last name.
Even Grace Jones took the opportunity to make an appearance, singing "Slave to the Rhythm" for her namesakes. If you can read Welsh, here's coverage from the local station.
Grace appeared to be the biggest diva on hand (no Tom or Catherine Zetas around), though there was no word if recently famous gay escort Mike Jones had made the trip across the pond.
The Agence France-Presse noted that "After the event, anyone calling a taxi back to home or hotel was also likely to be asked for their first name too."
