Westboro Baptist Church Files Tenth Circuit Appeal to Intervene in Kansas Gay Marriage Case

Wbc

With all signs pointing to gay marriage becoming legal in Kansas tomorrow, the Westboro Baptist Church is attempting a Hail Mary appeal.

Screen Shot 2014-11-10 at 11.59.09 AMOn grounds of their religious beliefs, the WBC is trying to become a defendant in Marie v. Moser, the case  the case in which a federal judge struck down the Kansas marriage ban. The court denied the request, saying the WBC's presence would "clutter" the case.

Head AFTER THE JUMP to read the Westboro Baptist Church's appeal in its entirety. It's full of the loony language you'd expect from the group.

Given the Supreme Court does not issue a stay on the ruling, same-sex marriage will be legal in Kansas tomorrow at 5pm, when the stay on the decision expires (the state of Kansas' request for an additional stay was denied).

Westboro Baptist Church Files Brief to Intervene in Challenge to Kansas Gay Marriage Ban

Westboro

Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church has filed a brief seeking to intervene in the challenge to the state's gay marriage ban, the Washington Blade reports:

In a 22-page legal brief filed Sunday loaded with references to biblical Scripture and condemnation of homosexuality, the Church seeks to take part in a lawsuit pending before the U.S. District Court for the Kansas, saying same-sex marriage “is utterly contrary to Bible doctrine.”

“Same-sex marriage will destroy Kansas,” the brief states. “If this Court requires Kansas officials to treat what God has called abominable as something to be respected, revered, and blessed with the seal-of-approval of the government, that will cross a final line with God. The harm that will befall this state, when the condign destructive wrath of God pours out on Kansans is the ultimate harm to the health, welfare and safety of the people.” [...]

Although the brief doesn’t contain the same anti-gay slurs that have made the church infamous, the filing does envision calamity if same-sex marriage is legalized in Kansas based on the biblical scripture. Stories cited by the church include the destruction of Sodom & Gomorrah, ancient cities thought to have incurred God’s wrath for allowing homosexuality, and God’s destruction of civilization worldwide by Noah’s flood.

Don't expect the court to accept the church's request to intervene. A similar, biblically-laced brief by a straight couple last week seeking to intervene on the grounds that gay marriage in Kansas would lead to a theft of their own marriage was tossed out by a federal judge for lack of legal standing in the case.

Kansas remains the only state in the Tenth Circuit without marriage equality.

Utah Companies Reject 'God Loves Gays' Billboards, God Not Impressed

God loves gays

Two billboard companies in Utah have declined requests to erect “God Loves Gays” signs in order to “avoid controversy,” reports Buzzfeed.

The “God Loves Gays” billboards are part of a national campaign that recently saw a similar massive display in Topeka, Kansas, the hometown of the Westboro Baptist Church.

Reagan Outdoor Advertising and YESCO said they rejected the ads because of the sensitive nature of issues around religion and LGBT rights.

God
God Reported To Be Unhappy With The Decision

Dewey Reagan, president and general manager of Reagan Outdoor Advertising, said the decision does not reflect the company’s position on the topic:

“It was a business decision based on structural realities of our business. We don’t actually own the majority of the land underneath the signs where our billboards are located. They are there pursuant to land lease agreements and some of those specifically prohibit display of ad copy that is controversial.”

In a written statement, YESCO said:

“As a privately owned company, YESCO carefully evaluates all requests for advertising placement. We avoid accepting advertisements that are interpreted as advancing sensitive religious, social, or political interests.”

The Almighty has since weighed in on the issue and questioned why his opinion is being stifled:

Post by God.

‘God Loves Gays’ Billboard Goes Up In Westboro Baptist Church’s Hometown: VIDEO

Gays

Last month we told you about the campaign run by the social media persona “God” to erect a “God Loves Gays” billboard in Topeka, Kansas, the hometown of the hate mongering Westboro Baptist Church. The campaign, which sought to raise $50,000 for this project, has been wildly successful, already raising over $80,000. On Monday, God’s billboard went up as promised. Mashable reports:

Despite his omnipotence, God actually got the idea for the billboard from his social media followers. "One day I asked them, what would you like the LORD to do in the real world? Well, the top suggestion (with over 1,000 ‘likes’) was to put up a billboard in Topeka, Kansas that says ‘God Loves Gays.’ I shared this idea and asked them if I should do it, and the resounding answer was, ‘Yes please, for the love of all that is holy, yes.' “

The additional funds God raised will be used “toward ‘stretch goals’ of buying bus ads, donations to an LGBT suicide prevention organization, and the National Alliance to End Homelessness.” The Westboro Baptist Church meanwhile embraced the billboard, attempting to spin the story in their typical hateful way on Twitter and in a written statement:

"Thank God for that lying billboard! Every soul that sees it will either rejoice for the lie and the vain hope of afflicting the servants of God at WBC," Shirley Phelps-Roper, a spokesperson for the Church tells Mashable via email. "Or, they will sigh and mourn for that awful sin and all the parts of it, knowing that every single soul that weighed in with money or words, in favor of that lying billboard, will stand before God in the Judgment, so very ashamed. Knowing also, that when they stand before God in the judgment, it will be TOO LATE for repentance, and eternal torment will follow."

Meanwhile, Lamar Advertising, the billboard company who sold the space, had a few reservations about the billboard according to God:

"They seemed a tad nervous," He writes. "Thus far they have only let Me purchase the billboard through March of 2015. I wanted to purchase the full year. I also wanted to investigate other bigger billboards around town. But before they’ll do that the billboard company wants to see if the community accepts it and likes it first.”

Lamar, however, insists,

“We support the First Amendment right of advertisers and believe that it is in the best interest of our company and the communities we serve to accept advertising copy openly. We do not accept or reject copy based upon agreement or disagreement with the views presented. We are firmly committed to our copy acceptance policy.”

Q Salt Lake also reports that should the project reach $100,000 in funding, God will put up another billboard in Provo, Utah.

Australian Comedian Responds to Westboro Accepting His Paid Trip to Iraq: VIDEO

Hills

Last week, Australian comedian and late night host Adam Hills went after Westboro Baptist Church for its plans to protest the funeral of the "fag enabler" Robin Williams. During the on-air rant, Hills pledged to fly a dozen of the church's members to Iraq - arguing that if the Phelps clan were really concerned with the Christian way of life, they would be picketing the people who threaten to behead Christians.

Shortly afterwards, the church responded:

After seriously looking into things and consulting the U.S. and UK governments, however, Hills decided to go with an alternative proposal - one that would better honor the memory of Williams without feeding into WBC's hunger for publicity.

'God Loves Gays' Billboard Campaign Launched To Fight Westboro Baptist Church Hate-Mongering: VIDEO

GodLovesGays

God loves gays. It's true. And tight white tees. You probably wouldn't know given the hate spewed by the funeral-protesting Westboro Baptist Church, which is exactly why God, well, God's representatives over at Facebook, have started a campaign to create "God Loves Gays" billboards. The goal? Spread a positive message of support in Westboro's hometown of Topeka, Kansas. Over $40,000 have been donated thus far and you can help spread the love even further.

Gay Star News reports:

‘God’s’ followers pledged the funds in just ten days, and ‘God’ now plans to buy more billboards with the message that ‘God loves gays’ in other parts of the United States if he can raise further funds.

Supporters will be rewarded with bumper stickers, limited edition t-shirts and posters saying ‘God loves gay’ signed by ‘God’ himself.

Around 1,200 people pledged to fund the campaign with donations of between $1 and $75 for the total package of rewards.

Head over to God's crowdfunding page to donate now!
