Yoko Ono's Imagine Peace Tower with Aurora Borealis

Over the past few days I've occasionally been checking out the webcam that faces Yoko Ono's Imagine Peace Tower in Reykjavik, Iceland (it's on until March 28 for the spring equinox and in honor of John and Yoko's honeymoon). For a webcam, it's pretty killer. Anyway, I just happened to check in and caught a frame (it updates every 5 minutes with a 30-second exposure) with a beautiful shot of the aurora borealis in the background. This is an unenhanced screencap. I was pretty amazed to be able to see the northern lights so clearly.

Thought I'd share.

The Imagine Peace Tower is powered entirely by geothermal energy.

John Lennon on Laptop Mission from the Grave

Thanks to the powers of digital resurrection, the late Beatle John Lennon is back in a new ad for OLPC (one laptop per child), a charitable group whose mission is to provide computers to the world's neediest children.

Says Lennon in the spot: "Imagine every child, no matter where in the world they were, could access a universe of knowledge. They would have a chance to learn, to dream, to achieve anything they want. I tried to do it through my music, but now you can do it in a very different way."

You can watch the Ono-approved spot, AFTER THE JUMP...

Yoko Ono Unveils Imagine Peace Tower in Iceland

On Tuesday, Yoko Ono unveiled a monument in memory of John Lennon that she hopes will be a literal beacon of peace for the world. According to the AP, "The tower is a beam of light, radiating from a wishing well bearing the words "imagine peace" in 24 languages. The plan is for it to be lit each year between his birthday, Oct. 9, and the anniversary of his death on Dec. 8."

The Imagine Peace Tower is located on Videy Island near Reykjavik, Iceland. Ono said Iceland was chosen "because it was a very eco-friendly country that relied on geothermal energy."

Ringo Starr was there for the dedicated ceremony, which is below on the left. In the video on the right, Ono talks about the plans for the tower.

The Imagine Peace Tower has inspired messages from Michael Moore, Cindy Sheehan, rocker Alice Cooper, and presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich:

Shears3 Shears4

British presenter Steve Jones of Transmission with T-Mobile wanted a little taste of Jake Shears much to Shears' surprise (and pleasure) during a show last Friday night. The Scissor Sisters appeared with The Gossip's Beth Ditto and Yoko Ono.
