Ozzie Guillen Defends Yunel Escobar's Anti-Gay Slur: 'In My House, We [Use] That Word Every 20 Seconds'

Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen, who was punished in 2006 for making an anti-gay slur about Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti ("What a piece of [deleted] he is, [deleted] fag.''), reacted to a similar incident by Toronto Blue Jay shortstop Yunel Escobar this week.

Marlins_guillenGuillen defended Escobar:

On Tuesday, Guillen said he didn't think Escobar meant to be offensive.

"I think he just did it for fun. I know he didn't mean to hurt anybody's feelings. Nobody is that stupid," he said before the Marlins hosted Atlanta.

"In my house, we call (each other) that word every 20 seconds. I've got three kids," Guillen said. "For us, it's like 'What's up, bro? What's up, dude?' It's how you say it and to who you say it. But that's our country. We have to respect this country. Sometimes for us it's funny, for other people it's not."

Escobar received a three-game suspension and must pay his lost salary to GLAAD and the You Can Play project. He will also undergo sensitivity training. Perhaps Guillen should join him.

Full Press Conference Regarding Yunel Escobar's 3 Game Suspension for Anti-Gay Eye Black Slur: VIDEO

Presser_escobar

Here's yesterday's full press conference with Toronto Blue Jay shortstop Yunel Escobar at which Escobar gives his statement, announces his suspension, and takes questions from reporters about why he did what he did.

EscobarAs I noted yesterday, Escobar will receive a three-game suspension with lost salary going to GLAAD and anti-homophobia sports group You Can Play. Escobar will also undergo sensitivity training.

Said Escobar of the slur: "I'm sorry for what happened and I guarantee this will not happen again in my career. It was not something I intended to be offensive. It was nothing intentional directed at anyone in particular. I don't have anything against homosexuals....It's just something that's been said around other Latinos. It's not something that was meant to be offensive. For us, it didn't have the significance in the way that it's being interpreted right now."

Toronto Blue Jays' Escobar Suspended 3 Games for Anti-Gay Slur, Will Donate Lost Salary to GLAAD, 'You Can Play'

Escobar

Toronto Blue Jays player Yunel Escobar, who took the field over the weekend with "Tu Ere Maricon" ("You are a faggot") painted in his eye black, will face a three game suspension and donate his lost salary to anti-defamation group GLAAD, and You Can Play, an organization dedicated to combating homophobia in sports.

Y_escobarHe will also undergo sensitivity training.

Said Escobar at a press conference this afternoon, through a translator: “I don’t have anything against homosexuals. I have friends that are gay...It’s just something that’s been said amongst the Latinos. It’s not something that’s meant to be offensive.”

If archived video becomes available of the presser, I'll be posting it later.

The Blue Jays released a statement: "The Blue Jays want to reaffirm that discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated. The club looks forward to supporting the efforts of You Can Play and GLAAD to help promote education for players and fans alike and to help keep language like this out of the game and society."

Said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick: "Today's actions show that MLB and the Toronto Blue Jays are committed to creating an environment that all fans and families can enjoy, not a place where discriminatory language and anti-gay attitudes are accepted."

Toronto Blue Jays Shortstop Yunel Escobar Takes Field with Anti-Gay 'Maricon' Slur in His Eye Black

Escobar

Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar has some explaining to do after taking the field on Saturday with an anti-gay slur printed in his eye black, Yahoo! Sports reports:

The "tu ere maricon" (sic) can be translated to "you are a faggot"...

...there is some reason to reserve judgment. Former Jays pitcher Dirk Hayhurst believes it to be a clubhouse prank — which basically just means there's a different source for such blatant homophobia. There's also the fact that Escobar sometimes wears eye black with funny sayings, so this would be out of character. (These, for instance, read "CHILLING")

Here's the thing, though: Eye black now comes in a strip or sticker form and players can write motivational sayings (think Tim Tebow) before applying themselves. There would be no need for Escobar to ask another player to write on his face. The handwriting in the "CHILLING" picture also matches the handwriting from the photo above.

Major League Baseball is investigating.
