Former “Ex-Gays” Apologize for Causing Harm to Gay Community

Three former leaders of “ex-gay” organization Exodus International held a news conference at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center on Wednesday on the eve of their former organization’s annual conference, being held in nearby Irvine, California.

BusseeA joint statement was read by former Exodus co-founder Michael Bussee:

“Some who heard our message were compelled to try to change an integral part of themselves, bringing harm to themselves and their families. Although we acted in good faith, we have since witnessed the isolation, shame, fear and loss of faith that this message creates.”

According to the Associated Press, “Bussee left Exodus in 1979 after he fell in love with a man who was a fellow ex-gay counselor with the group. He speaks out frequently against ex-gay therapies. The others speaking at the news conference included Jeremy Marks, former president of Exodus International Europe, and Darlene Bogle, the founder and former director of Paraklete Ministries, an Exodus referral agency based in Hayward, California. Chambers, who is married and has children, said he and other current Exodus officials are careful to warn those who seek help that such a path is not easy. Sexual orientation, he said, ‘isn’t a light switch that you can switch on and off.'”

ChambersCurrent Exodus president Alan Chambers responded to their claims: “Exodus is here for people who want an alternative to homosexuality. There are thousands of people like me who have overcome this. I think there’s room for more than one opinion on this subject, and giving people options isn’t dangerous.”

The L.A. Times reports: “Among those at the news conference was the Rev. Mel White, founder and president of a faith-based gay rights group called Soulforce. White, who was the ghostwriter for the Rev. Jerry Falwell’s autobiography and later came out as gay, praised the former Exodus leaders. ‘It’s a major moment, a paradigm shift,’ White said. ‘They’re saying this doesn’t work, and that’s incredibly important.'”

The Exodus conference is expected to attract 1,000 people.

Below, a few recent videos of Michael Bussee speaking out about being an ex-“ex-gay”. More here.

  1. Wayne says

Chambers has the “gay” face down pat! Yeah, he’s a total breeder…he even says so ūüėČ

  2. sam says

Chambers and his ilk always claim that there are “thousands” of “ex-gays” out there living the hetero life, yet when pressed for specifics, the only ones who ever come forward are the professional heterosexuals like Chambers who make a living from this ugly exploitation. Chambers pulls those numbers of “success stories” out of thin air. It’s all a house of cards.

  3. dcguy says

Sam, Chambers pulls those numbers out of his ass…..and I’m guessing that’s not all he pulls out.

  4. Howard says

That conference is pretty close to my home. I might stop by. It’s probably a good place to find a date…plenty of horny ex-homos with hotel rooms.

  5. mark m says

I’ve never seen a hunky ex-gay. I’m not saying they don’t exist..but like bigfoot, I’ve just never seen one. As shallow as it sounds, I just can’t help thinking, “well no wonder, he just doesn’t have many options, does he?”

  6. JR says

I think the Exodus clan should really make the point that although some of these guys can choose to live a hetero life and marry and have kids, etc. They should also point out that once a homo always a homo and if they choose to “overcome” it, they should also know that it never goes away. But obviously if they informed these poor guys about that, they probably wouldn’t buy into their bullshit to begin with.

  7. anon ( says

Are any of these apologetic ex-ex-gay leaders going to return the thousands of dollars they took from their victims? I’m surprised there haven’t been a whole ton of lawsuits. “Results may vary!”

  8. RP says

Actually, now that I really look at it, Chambers looks like Detective George Francisco from Alien Nation.

    Dude has a giant cranium.

  9. Dean says

    Here’s something I’ve wondered about recently…

Has anyone ever noticed that these “ex-gay” men always seem to marry “ex-gay” women? I have to wonder if the turbo-“Christians” that tout this tripe would be willing to let an “ex-gay” man marry their daughter.

Yes, James Dobson, I’m talking to you.

  10. Dr. Pat says

Purses at ten paces. Give a queen a mike and boom. God forbid they are on tv. This just qualifies my thoughts about people running or think they are running areas and speak for me. I don’t think so.

Somebody steal their collective tiars and get on with life.

    Just a thought.

  11. TH says

Honestly from the few photos I have seen, and mind you the “ex-gays” all seem to be hiding deeper in the closet than anyone, I wouldnt want to date any of them. Please “ex-gays” STAY “ex-gay” we dont want you!

Intocada y b√°rbara belleza.
