Obama Administration Not About Gay Marriage Platform, Yet...
Despite the fact that President Obama endorsed gay marriage and that almost three dozen congressfolk, among others, have demanded that gay nuptials be included in the Democratic Party's official platform, the White House apparently is not interested in institutionalizing equality in their agenda. So says the Washington Examiner.
"Well, party platform issues are for the party to decide," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said when asked if Obama would call for the repeal of DOMA and endorsement of pro-gay marriage language in the party platform. "That process is underway, and I refer you to the DNC on the question about the platform."
He added that "the President’s belief that DOMA ought to be repealed is well stated."
Carney refused to disclose when Obama actually completed the process of "evolving" towards support for gay marriage. "I don’t have a specific date for you," he said.
Perhaps Obama needs another push? Or, better yet, maybe Mr. Biden needs to get in front of the cameras again.

Not an issue he should be running on, honestly.

Obama is going to lose this election. At this point it's about the legacy he leaves behind...He might as well help to enshrine marriage rights as part of the Dem party platform. History is all he should be thinking about now, because after endorsing gay marriage and the state of the economy, he doesn't have a snowflakes chance in hell of being reelected. He should just go all out, forget the politics and help create a lasting legacy.

Newsflash. Obama is not going to lose this election. Who, exactly, is he going to lose it to?

Washington Examiner is a conservative rag that didn't even have Obama's announcement as the main headline of the day - - instead it was hidden in a small-text announcement off to the right of a sports main-story. I never pick it up at the metro.

Give the man a break.

It's inaccurate to say that the President "endorsed" marriage equality. He was VERY careful to make it clear that he was not making a political statement but rather stating a "personal opinion".
His evolution has taking a great leap forward but it isn't quite complete. As long as he supports the states' right to discriminate he continues to deny the spirit and letter of the Loving v Virginia ruling of SCOTUS.
I applaud his latest move but I'm going to continue to push him to finish his evolutionary process.
I think his personal evolution is complete even if his public position is evolving in spits and spurts.

Biden was wrong for making this political move when he did, and Obama is going to suffer the political consequences for his actions.
I had a well-spoken and thought-out comment written backing my assertion up, but it looks like it was pruned before it could ever reach comments.

Pedro, let's see if you show up here on election night to eat those words.

Ok, keep pushing him and pushing him and pushing him....right off the cliff. Of course you've probably done that already. It's never enough for many of those who post here ... This President has done more for gay people than all other Presidents combined, but many of you just keep asking for me. When President Romney appoints another Alito or Scalia to the Supreme Court, who is approved by the Republican Senate, then all of you who kept carping about Obama can wait another 20 years before your lives get better. Or you can move to Canada. It's depressing to read so many of these commentaries here that constantly criticize him....
I realize many of you will disagree with this message, and I respect your right to disagree....but I don't respect all the crap that's being dumped on the President.

Quite the contrary, Midleoftheroader, I think you make a great point.
I am also proud that the President is willing to carry this heavy burden to full equality with us. It lightens each of our own journey just a little bit. And we've all needed something positive to remind us all is not lost.
The administration can also start compiling hate-spewed sound bits from all the republicans as they respond to this...and then use them in election ads.
Stand for Obama and you stand for equality, fairness and the real American Way.
Stand for Romney and you stand for what? Hate.
Obama 2012. Let's make it happen dudes.

Obama was careful to choose his words. He made us think that he loves us, which is the key to getting us to donate to his re-election effort. So far, I ain't buying it.

Do you want to get everything you asked Santa for or do you want to re-elect Barack Obama? Because I don't think you can have both.
Look at EVERY state where gay marriage has been put to a popular vote then ask yourself if making this election a referendum on gay marriage is really a wise choice.
"You always said you were an 'all or nothing kinda guy.' Well you can't have it all, so you get nothing."

Many lefties wont be happy until Obama officiates at a same sex wedding in the Rose Garden. If you look at the electoral map you will see that there are 12 swing states in which the election will be won or lost. In almost all of those swing states the issue of marriage equality is a drag on the democrats. Obama's endorsement of gay marriage may have already spelled his defeat. So go ahead, if you want President Romney and republican majorities in the Senate and House, and identify him even more with gay marriage. I intend to vote for Obama but I also voted for Presidents Humphrey, McGovern, Dukakis, Gore and Kerry. So i am use to losing.

The Washington Examiner is and has always been an extreme conservative newspaper.
THE PAPER HAS BEEN ON THE SIDE OF LGBT AMERICANS
Posted by: Larry | May 11, 2012 4:42:35 AM
OOPS I MEANT THE PAPER HAS NEVER BEEN ON THE SIDE OF LGBT AMERICANS. IT'S VERY CONSERVATIVE AND IGNORANT. i'm sad that towleroad would even post anything from this homophobic right wing newspaper

@Mic: A reality check. In all 32 states in which the people have been able to vote on the marriage equality issue: it has LOST. Just wait and see how the billionaire wingnut Koch brothers and others of their ilk spend tens of millions of dollars in the 7-12 swing states to cast this marriage equality issue as un-American and un-godly. I think this issue is going to be the straw that broke the camels back and we will lose.

Obama's "endorsement" of same sex marriage doesn't matter AT ALL if he loses the election this November.
Posted by: elg/edwin | May 11, 2012 6:18:49 AM
This election isn't going to be decided on gay marriage. How can people be so stupid. If this was a NARAL site all the posts would be on how abortion is deciding the election.
It's the economy stupid. Do some historical analysis and pay attention to the wrong track/right track numbers at the time of the election and what that meant. You might sound more intelligent in predicting winners and losers.
