And don’t close it prematurely, ’cause it DOESN’T get better…

    …than George Takei! :)

Appreciate their participation in any case, but none of the three astronauts actually say they’re gay themselves, and it’s not unusual for nongays to participate in such videos as supporters. For those unaware, one of Frank Kameny’s dreams before being fired by the government for being gay was becoming an astronaut someday.

Astronaut Steven Swanson: Married to the former Mary Drake Young of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. They have three children.

Astronaut Catherine Coleman is married to glass artist Josh Simpson who lives in Massachusetts. They have one son.

Astronaut Megan McArthur is simply identified as “married” by NASA’s site.

“It gets better” implies first-hand knowledge of whatever it is that’s getting better. one certainly appreciates heterosexual allies and their support but there occurs a pang of disappointment in learning the speakers have not necessarily experienced the whatever it is getting better.

I appreciate where these videos are coming from but honestly, how would a straight person know it gets better for a gay person?

And to be fair, the description says “LGBT astronauts, a flight engineer, a director, a manager, an educator, and an intern”. So thats probably why we assumed the astronauts were gay.

According to Wikipedia, K. Megan McArthur is married to a man so all three astronauts featured are straight. The site should probably take out the LGBT astronauts line.

“It gets better” even though there are apparently no gay astronauts. Oh well

As we found out with Sally Ride, you can’t be gay and an astronaut because of the bad PR for NASA. A lot of the funding for NASA comes from southern states where the facilities are located, and that’s another strike against the combo.

But does it get better for NASA? I do know that President Richard Nixon’s name is still on the moon.
