Obama Responds to 'Outrageous' McCain Threats to Block Possible Nomination of Susan Rice: VIDEO

Sr_obama

In his 16th press conference today, President Obama took a hard stance over threats by John McCain and Lindsey Graham to block UN Ambassador Susan Rice over the attack in Benghazi if he chose to nominate her for Secretary of State.

"If Senator McCain and Senator Graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me. And I'm happy to have that discussion with them. But for them to go after the U.N. ambassador, who had nothing to do with Benghazi, and was simply making a presentation based on the intelligence that she had received, and to besmirch her reputation, is outrageous."

Boehner, McCain Blast 'Dangerous' Michele Bachmann For 'Muslim Infiltration' Investigation

BachmannHumaFailed Republican presidential candidate and perennial anti-gay Rep. Michele Bachmann and four of her GOP colleagues last month asked the House of Representatives to launch an investigation into whether or not Muslim extremists had infiltrated the United States government.

One person specifically named as a potential candidate for manchurian status was Huma Abedin, a former aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton who is also married to former Rep. Anthony Weiner.

According to Bachmann and company, Abedin has three family members aligned with Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood and therefore she deserves investigation.

According to House Speaker John Boehner and fellow Republican John McCain, that's hogwash. "I think accusations like this being thrown around are pretty dangerous," said Boehner, while McCain called the allegations "an unwarranted and unfounded attack on an honorable woman, a dedicated American, and a loyal public servant."

"When anyone, not least a member of Congress, launches specious and degrading attacks against fellow Americans on the basis of nothing more than fear of who they are and ignorance of what they stand for, it defames the spirit of our nation, and we all grow poorer because of it," the Arizona Senator said.

Bachmann seems unfazed by this intraparty criticism, which she told CNN was based on distortions, and remains steadfast in her concern that extremists may be able to get to President Obama: "The intention of the letters was to outline the serious national security concerns I had and ask for answers to questions regarding the Muslim Brotherhood and other radical group's access to top Obama administration officials."

NEWS: Trouble In Egypt, Troubles With Twinkies

Road Nobel Peace Prize-winning moderate Mohamed ElBaradei backs out of Egyptian presidential election:

“The former regime did not fall,” Mr. ElBaradei said in a statement, arguing that the military council that took power in the name of the revolution had instead proved to be an extension of the Mubarak government. “My conscience does not permit me to run for the presidency or any other official position unless it is within a real democratic system.”

On the eve of the anniversary of the Jan. 25 uprising that forced Mr. Mubarak from power, Mr. ElBaradei’s announcement may help rally support for the protests planned for that day to demand the exit of the ruling military council.

Road Congrats to Susan Allen, the first Native American lesbian elected to a US state legislature:

During a special general election to the Minnesota State House, Allen defeated her opponent Nathan Blumenshine with 56 percent of the vote to fill the vacated seat of now Senator Jeff Hayden.

The morning after the election, Allen said she wanted to dive into legislative work and her early priorities were to bring jobs and job training to her district and work on a fair tax system for Minnesota. As an openly gay legislator, Allen also said she would begin her fight against the discriminatory constitutional marriage amendment.

On her website, Allen states, “I am a passionate supporter of marriage equality. As a lesbian, I feel this inequality every day. I will use my position as State Rep to speak loudly against the marriage amendment and in favor of equality for all Minnesota families. I will also use my 2012 reelection campaign as a vehicle to turn out voters against writing discrimination into our state constitution.”

Bashou has been in the United States nine years. She said through an interpreter that becoming a citizen is something she wanted to do for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to remember her by.

She turns 112 in July.

New Mitt Romney Ad Falsely Attributes McCain Quote to Obama: VIDEO

Romney

Think Progress reports on the new Mitt Romney national campaign ad:

The ad features a voice-over of Obama saying “if we keep talking about the economy, we’re going to lose.” Then-candidate Obama indeed said those words, perhaps dozens of times during the closing month of the 2008 campaign. The only problem? Obama was actually quoting the words of a strategist from Sen. John McCain’s campaign.

Enjoy this screenshot, in which he appears dumbfounded by a giant.

Watch: Rick Santorum Says McCain Doesn't Understand Torture

Santorum

Rachel Maddow discusses Rick "frothy mix" Santorum's position on the completely debunked claim that torture led to Osama bin Laden's killing, and his insistence that tortured Vietnam vet John McCain's position against enhanced interrogation techniques is because he doesn't understand how they work.

“Everything I’ve read shows that we would not have gotten this information as to who this man was if it had not been gotten information from people who were subject to enhanced interrogation,” Santorum said, referring to the courier that led Americans to Osama bin Laden. “And so this idea that we didn’t ask that question while Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was being waterboarded, he doesn’t understand how enhanced interrogation works. I mean, you break somebody, and after they’re broken, they become cooperative.”
