New Jersey Governor Corzine Signs Civil Union Bill

Corzine2

Making his state the third in the country to legalize civil unions for same-sex couples, Governor Jon Corzine today signed legislation proposed following an October directive from the state's highest court. The new law takes effect in 60 days.

Seen here embracing Garden State Equality head Steven Goldstein, Senator Loretta Weinberg said she expected those rights to advance in name within five years: "Not too far down the road, these rights for same-sex couples will be known, as they should, under the banner of marriage."

  10. If a couple entered a civil union somewhere else (Vermont or Connecticut at present), it is considered valid in New Jersey.

  13. Mazel Tov New Joisey, from your roving native son in Montreal. It is my sincere hope that the U.S. will, one of these days soon, emulate what Canada has done, and totally legalize same-sex marriage throughout the entire country. But this is really an encouraging step in the right, or should I say correct direction.
