Barack Obama to Announce Running Mate Via Text Message

Obama

We are in a new age. The WaPo notes:

"Last night, in a cell phone text message that was quickly followed by an e-mail linking back to a new page on his Web site -- my.barackobama.com/vp -- aides to Sen. Barack Obama's (D-Ill.) campaign wrote: 'Barack will announce his VP candidate choice through txt message between now & the Conv. Tell everyone to text VP to 62262 to be the first to know! Please forward.' Note three things: the casual reference to the candidate ('Barack'); the call to 'forward' the text (to friends, relatives, etc.); the perceived personal appeal of being 'the first to know'; and the timing -- the text was sent two weeks before the Democratic National Convention kicks off. That gives plenty of time for the text to be passed around. It also gives the Obama campaign one more way to differentiate itself technologically from its Republican opponent; Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) doesn't have a text messaging program."

Be "the first to know" here.

  1. Please, let it be Reichen!

  2. Ok, 24play, I will take the bait. But would he go by Reichen or Richard on the ballot?

  3. I hope he Twitter's it too. He doesn't have my phone number.

  4. I love the guy, I love his message, but you know... I get enough DNC crap coming into my land-mail box, I don't need to give them my cell phone number for more e-Spam.

And trust me, once you give out this information, it's OUT THERE.

I'm perfectly content to find out who he picks when everyone else does.

Now, if naked muscle wrestlers want to text me, that's a whole 'nother story!

  5. I really don't think this is as exciting as it apparently sounds.

    Posted by: anon | Aug 11, 2008 10:57:50 AM

  6. Yea, no doubt the media will be reporting this about .0001 nanoseconds after the texts are sent out. No need to provide my phone number for future spammings.

  7. I donated to the campaign but yet still get TWO sets of e-mails per blast, one to prior donors and ones to those who have yet to donate. Annoying.

I thought about signing up for the text message but then saw that the click-box agreement provides them the ability to send periodic updates via text. No, thanks.

Sorry, Barack, but know I support you. I'll look for the CNN Breaking News alert moments after that text goes out.

  9. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, arguably the LGBT community’s most powerful straight political ally, is supporting an anti-gay Texas congressman in the Democratic presidential veepstakes, The Associated Press reports.

Pelosi says she wants Chet Edwards, a Democrat from Waco who’s been in the House since 1990, to be Sen. Barack Obama’s running mate.

“I hope he will be the nominee,” Pelosi said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.”

Edwards scored a 15 out of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign’s most recent Congressional Scorecard, putting him in a three-way tie for least gay-friendly among 11 Democratic House members from Texas. Among other things, Edwards, a Southern Baptist, supported the Federal Marriage Amendment in 2006.

“As a husband and a father, I believe that marriage is a sacred union between a man and a woman and I will support efforts in Congress to protect the sanctity of this union,” Edwards said in a press release posted on his Web site.

The press release notes that Edwards also supported the Marriage Protection Act in 2004 and the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996.

Pelosi’s office didn’t return a phone call seeking comment.

  10. Hmm... your post says "the text *was* sent", but it hasn't been sent yet? And 2 weeks before the DNC kick-off is today!

  11. With each passing week, everything Obama says and does puts him further in the hole, as predicted. This is just one more way to hound people for money. And with Obama, it is all about the money and having the largest surplus in history at the end of this campaign.

Obama will lose this election because of his arrogance, non-stop flip flops and lack of any coherent plan that makes sense. His "let's pretend to be President" trip to Germany was the biggest turnoff to voters yet. It is blatantly obvious that he will say anything to get elected, none of which has anything to do with his hidden agenda of transferring wealth from whites to blacks and Africa via increased taxes. Everything else is secondary.

Obama's new social spending programs will make pork barrel spending look like chump change. And Congress will never buy it as each member is looking out for themselves first. Every Congressional earmark means money in their pockets kicked back from the recipient.

Every sane individual in this country is onto Obama which is why he will never win the election. The polls consistently say 70% don't trust him. Hopefully he will go into a meltdown at the convention when Hillary is part of the delegate roll call.

And for all of you John Kerry supporters, I told you so, months ago. For this egotistical jerk to enter a campaign and take people's money with a whore in waiting lurking in the background is nothing short of outrageous. He should be sued and required to return every dime he collected. And it looks like massive campaign funds where transferred to the whore, at least $50,000 per month.

Once again, the Clintons were the only chance this country had to get back on track. The Democrats blew it and now everyone is going to pay. There won't be much left of this country by the time 2012 rolls around.

Obama is devoid of common sense. Anyone who can't see that is totally lost.

  12. "...hidden agenda of transferring wealth from whites to blacks and Africa."

  13. Jeez Johnny uh, did you lose the Miss Gay Klan Pageant swimsuit competition or what? Btw, the congeniality portion is probably off the table as well.

ANOTHERDEMOCRATICIDIOT thanks for that info. I think Pelosi is a total dumbass (not allowing a vte on drilling gave the republicans a great non-issue to use in Nov) and this confirms it. Im going to check this and if true email blast every gay Californian I know who might be thinking of supporting her in her next election.

  14. Haha, yeah I was laughing at that line too, Derrick. I guess that "secret agenda" is better than the Obama-is-an-undercover-terrorist paranoia, but really...are people really this paranoid? Can our electorate get any dumber? And since members of my own family think Mr. Obama is a Manchurian Candidate, I can confidently answer "Yes we Can!"

  15. FYI - GBM - The blacks and idiots can't carry this election, so go smoke that for a while. You and your family fall into the class of those waiting for another handout.

  16. Me and my conservative Republican family? You are dumber than expected, Mr. Lane.
