Right Balks At Anti-Gay Minnesota Amendment's Title

MNMinnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie was tasked with giving a title to a November ballot measure that would constitutionally ban marriage equality. The title he chose? "Limiting the status of marriage to opposite sex couples."

The use of "limiting" makes clear that this amendment would take away rights from Minnesota citizens, which is precisely why conservatives opponents of equality are now asking the state's Supreme Court to reverse Ritche's title.

From The Jamestown Sun:

Republican legislators and Minnesota for Marriage, an umbrella group supporting the amendment, today asked the high court to return the title to how it passed the Legislature: "Recognition of marriage solely between one man and one woman."

...

GOP amendment supporters said Richie, supported by the attorney general’s office, exceeded his legal authority to change the title…

Activists and lawmakers haven't set a deadline for a court ruling, but State Sen. Julianne Ortman told the paper she hopes to see a final verdict within 60 days.

  1. They'd prefer it be called "Protecting Jesus' Patriotic American Children" , or something.

  2. "Recognition?"

That's more of an implication of a fact. This, like any other vote on LGBT rights, is a popularity contest of public opinion which is always influenced by the fear-mongering righties. It is not an evaluation of fact or thing to be "recognized."

Do you recognize the sky is blue? Yes
Do you recognize males are better drivers than females? No. You could hold that opinion, but it's not something you recognize.

If they're so on board with making gay marriage even more illegal in MN, they shouldn't have to hide behind the verbiage of this ballot measure.

  6. I'm not sure reversing the title is a good idea. "Couples sex opposite to marriage of status the limiting" isn't very comprehensible, much less grammatical.

  7. Republicans love this political system because they can manipulate it so easily. The whole US political system is broken.

We need to scrap it and start again and the first thing we need to rewrite is the Constitution. The current US political/judicial system is set up to PREVENT any kind of progress.
