The NYT story on the RCC in Nigeria (it could just as well be a dozen other African countries) demonstrates two things. The pelvic culture war issues have no traction there (except when Protestant evangelicals come meddling from the U.S.). Second, those countries are so totally corrupt and non-functional, that the Catholic institutions are the only social services available.
The second point is this. The RCC will face no pressure to change or even care as Europe and North America go bye-bye to them. The brown and black poverty stricken, ill governed masses will provide the numbers, and the American K of C and other rightwing millionaires the money (and don't forget the strange German church tax support as well ). At best they may allow some priests to marry (heterosexually of course), but nada on other issues important on this blog.

It makes me laugh when these right wingers claim to be "Christian" but they support political parties who keep people poor, rob people of their pensions, fire people because they are gay or because of the color of their skin and keep women out of top jobs. Very Christian values !
