Eight People Held in Connection to Beating Death of Gay Rights Activist Clement Meric

Eight far-right extremists are being held in connection to the beating death of gay rights and anti-fascist activist Clement Meric on Wednesday night, the Guardian reports:

MericThe interior minister, Manuel Valls, blamed "an extreme right group" for the murder. He said there had been a "dangerous discourse" in France for several weeks, a nod to the heated row over same-sex marriage and violent skirmishes on the fringes of the anti-gay marriage movement and demonstrations.

The leftwing former presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon said the fact that Marine Le Pen's far-right Front National, which has increased its scores in elections and now has two MPs, had become normalised and "banal" had allowed all types of extreme-right movements to flourish.

The hard-left Parti de Gauche warned of "the fascist horror which has killed right at the heart of Paris", while some of Meric's fellow activists called his death "a political murder".

Le Pen said the attack had nothing to do with her party and the FN had "no contact, near or far" with Meric's attackers.

Serge Ayoub, a former skinhead leader in Paris once known as "Batskin" for his baseball bat, and now linked to the extreme-right group Jeunesses Nationalistes Revolutionnaires (Nationalist Revolutionary Youth) denied any members of his group were responsible for Meric's death.

Thousands have joined demonstrations against fascism in France following the horrific incident.

  1. Didn't realize how many sickos there are in France.

  2. Madonna was right... Marine LePen is a Nazi sympathizer. If her rhetoric mobilizes Neo-Nazis to kill an anti-Fascist, gay-rights activist, then she has blood on her hands.

  3. Is it just me, or is Serge Ayoub a really bizarre name for a skinhead?

  4. He still shouldn't have joined a violent protest gang. Can't have sympathy for someone who joins a violent and sometimes homophobic gang, the antifascists.

  5. Has anyone else noticed how the crazy revisionists (like the guy above who claimed Mussolini and Hitler were leftists) seem to post incessantly on Towleroad? I was just reading JoeMyGod's coverage of the Clément Méric murder and the comments there are much more respectful and thoughtful.

  6. The Antifa remind me of the OWS movement.

-We came to protest greedy bankers ....... and we should support gays too!

-Um wut? No, I didn't sign up for that part.

And that's the last we heard from OWS.

-We came to fight skinheads ... and we should support gays too!

Another leftist movement destroyed by internal homophobia.

  7. Remember how Kev C is just another alias for the same troll who posts anti-left things on this site every day? I do, and so should you. Ignore "its" disgusting posts.

  8. They threatened with blood and blood was spilt. Now the right can be happy with their notion of traditional marriage.

  9. Your muslims friends, your african, chinese and hispanic friends, and your eastern european and macho marxist and college radical friends, they support you fighting against fascists groups. Oh but they aren't with you for gay rights.

Another Leftist movement destroyed by internal homophobia.

Get used to hearing those words.

  10. KevC get used to hearing these words "We are everywhere"

  11. @ty "We are everywhere"
So is the NSA. I wonder how much government funding the Antifa groups get, since they are a quasi-governmental organization.

  12. @Leroy Laflamme,

He could have some connection to France's former colony, Algeria. Many of the former French Algerians were and are on the hard right.

  14. Regardless of some other's will say, extremism on the far left and far right is far more commonplace and in-your-face in Europe than in the U.S.

  15. Mussolini WAS a leftist, and he incorporated some leftist attitudes and ideas into fascism.

Also, a major portion of the original founders of national SOCIALISM [NAZI] party were socialist. The leader among them was Ernst Roehm, the openly gay leader of the brown shirts [SA]. He vied with Hitler for the leadership position of the party. He was murdered on Hitler's order, even though they were close friends. And in fact, the Nazis and Italian Fascists incorporated many aspects of socialism into their platforms and ideologies.

Fascism, communism, socialism all have a lot in common with each other.

  16. @ratbastard I don't know what happened, but you've been posting some very interesting comments lately. Thanks.

  17. @ratbastard,

Ayoube is of Lebanese extraction, presumably Maronite. Many Maronites have fierce anti-Muslim sentiments, and such people are natural companions of the French far right.
