Indiana Gov. Mike Pence Signals Support for Anti-Gay Amendment, Will Speak to Hate Group

Indiana Governor Mike Pence is set to keynote a luncheon next week for the anti-gay Indiana Family Institute.

FlyerThe event is being held to help drum up support for the constitutional ban on gay marriage that is currently stalled in the Indiana House Judiciary Committee.

Jeremy Hooper over at Good as You writes:

Regardless of how self-satisfying the lunch, those of us on the right side of history will of course enjoy the most delicious dessert. That is a given.

But it's still downright stomach-churning to know that there are duly elected lawmakers/executives out there who are so adamantly against us that they are wasting this legislative time and goodwill here at this late stage in the marriage equality game. Not that it was ever right to do so, mind you. But now, when so many married gay couples are out there leading by example and cutting through the past two decades' mean-spirited fear campaigns, this 2014 push seems downright vicious. Spiteful. Vengeful in a really animus-driven way.

Pence also signaled his support for a proposed constitutional ban on same-sex marriage in his State of the State Address, WBIW reports:

He didn't directly call for the amendment's passage, but did warn legislators against suggestions the amendment be reworded, saying legislators should "resolve this issue this year once and for all." Any change in the amendment would extend the debate another two years.

Pence urged "a debate worthy of our people, with civility and respect" for those on either side of the issue.

  1. I hope this ploy bites their ass the way the Minnesota amendment bit the asses of the Minnesota Republicans. They wound up losing control of both houses of the legislature. They don't seem to realize that wedge like this drives our supporters to polls as well as the bigots. In any case, the question of marriage equality is likely to be decided in Indiana by the federal courts, so Pence is smoking his own pipe dreams if he thinks that passing a marriage ban is going "to settle this question once and for all."

  2. Gov. Pence is an extreme homophobe. As a college student at Ball State University, located in his former congressional district, I wrote to him about gay rights around 2006/2007. His response was absolutely disgusting, quoting decades-old research and religious doctrine. Thank God I wasn't a teenager reaching out for help, could you imagine if a suicidal constituent had received such a POS response from an elected official? Pence is a monster, pure and simple.

  3. Please note, Governor, The United Methodist Church in Alexandria, Indiana. You are definitely a nasty loser, who is ill-equipped to lead anything as diverse as an entire state....perhaps a small Ku Klux Klan somewhere that is more in line with your abilities.

  6. @Jay, I'm not so confident that we will pull another Minnesota on this one (I hope we do, but I'm not going to bet the farm). Besides the preposterous notion that we should be voting on any ones rights, What will be interesting, if this does go to a vote, is what will the final tally be?

I think we are likely to lose, but I also think the margin will be shockingly close, and certainly not the blowout that the other side would have you believe.

  7. I'm afraid, Pence, there is NO civility and respect when it comes to legislating hate laws and/or constitutional amendments against the LGBT community. You and your fellow GOPers are homophobic bigots who will deserve whatever nastiness comes your way.

  8. Yet ANOTHER disgusting homophobe. They seem to be everywhere, like sewer rats...and I apologize for insulting the rats.

  9. Sorry, Governor Pence, but henceforth, in this "debate", there will be no civility and no respect shown to your side. That time is long past, as we have systematically dismantled every stupid, biased, ignorant, ridiculous "argument" that your bigoted voting base of evangelical effluvia have deigned to throw out into the court of public opinion regarding the civil rights of gay and lesbian people. We will no longer tolerate your kind. From this point onward, we will not give you any opportunity, any forum to continue to promote the hatred that seems to be generic to the spiteful and vindictive extremists who continue to obstruct what you by now should understand is the irrevocable advancement of full civil equality for LGBT people. We will not be denied. Understand this, Governor: we will stop you and your hateful supporters by whatever means necessary.

  10. They would be wise to wait until the federal court cases reach a conclusion, otherwise it could be a huge waste of time.

  11. It is a giant waste of time and money. Don't forget, every minute they're "legislating" they're getting paid.

Pence is a tool, in every sense of the word.
