NYC Pride Responds to Catholic League's Bill Donohue's Interest in Marching in Parade: VIDEO

Donohue

Last night we reported that Catholic League mouthpiece Bill Donohue had applied to march in NYC's LGBT Pride parade carrying a "Straight is Great" banner in a challenge to its inclusiveness following controversy over gay exclusion from the St. Patrick's Day parade.

NYC Pride has responded, it tells Towleroad:

In response to email communications from Bill Donohue, President of the Catholic League, NYC Pride representatives provided instructions for the March’s online registration system.

“Mr. Donohue and his group are free to participate in the 2014 March. His group’s presence affirms the need for this year’s Pride theme, ‘We Have Won When We’re One.’ Straight is great – as long as there’s no hate,” said David Studinski, March Director of NYC Pride.

Chris Frederick, Managing Director of NYC Pride, added, “Straight allies are great. We have thousands of straight people participating in the Pride March, including Catholic groups, who support LGBT youth, families and married couples.”

GLAAD's Commentator Accountability Project provided background information on Bill Donohue's recent statements on LGBT people. On February 27, 2014, Donohue gave a video interview with World Over with Raymond Arroyo in which he stated, "If I wanted to get into their gay pride parade with my own float with big banners saying 'straight is great,' they would have a right to feel put-upon and I wouldn't do that to them."

  1. Now we'll see him making excuses to not go on the parade. He is so stupid that he must think gay people hate straights, but there are a lot of straight people in the gay pride, and all gays have straight friends (real straight friends not like the gay friends of Sarah Palin)

  2. I think its awsome that the NY Pride will allow him to march in the Parade - tho I doubt he will...he'll come up with some excuse, after-all...if he marched - and ALL went very well.....whom is he gonn aHate and steer his anger towards...? (Those Awful gays that INCLUDED HIM???)

  3. Since Bill is basically the only member of the Catholic League, who is going to carry the other end of his banner in the parade?

Oh yeah, I forgot, their other fatty blowhard, Timmy Dolan.

  4. I think he really thought he had a gotcha moment, that he could catch gay people being hypocrites. If he knew anything about pride, other than his thought that it's all about raunchy sex, he'd see that most across the country are already very inclusive. Here in Austin we have drag queens, gogo boys, LGBT groups and dozens of churches and religious groups that march every year. And all are allowed to carry banners identifying who they are. So that's how pride is different from these saint Patricks day parades. We don't demand that groups we may disagree with hide who they are. We happily accept their support and willingness to join in the celebration.

  5. I think he should march. Right behind a group of victims of church sexual abuse, and in front of a hard core s&m group.

  6. I personally would welcome the guy with open arms if he wanted to march with his banner. As others here are saying, however, he will definitely pull out prematurely.

  9. Straight Catholics (and Mormons and Baptists and Methodists and Presbyterians and UCCs and UU's and Episcopalians and Buddhists and Jews...) have marched under their own banners in Gay Pride Parades around the world for DECADES.

The difference is, gay people want to march in the St. Patrick's Day parades to SUPPORT and PROMOTE Irish people/culture/expression whereas Donahue wants to march in the Pride Parade to demonize/harass/chastise/belittle/mock gay people/culture/expression.

    Another Bill Donahue fail.

  11. He's gay right? Closeted or living a celibate life? I bet he is.

  12. His comments on the Magdalene system are really awful. Irish and Irish-American catholics acknowledge how sick that system was and are disgusted by it. Donohue is a bought-and-paid for $350,000/year spokesman for the same anonymous rich, traditionalist Catholics who bankroll NOM and pay Brian Brown $250,000/year.
If the catholic church drowned puppies in baptismal fonts on live TV, Donohue would find a hundred ways of defending it.
So, come march in the parade, Bill. Show your colors. Now rainbows. Green, the color of money. Forget about that bit about it being harder for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Jesus must have been referring to somebody else.

  13. My best friend's parents were professional Catholic bigots. They couldn't begin to support themselves with that line of work, but they were made wealthy by a rich, extremist right-wing patron who wanted it to look like that brand of hate was successful on its own.

The irony is all that money became the inheritance that ended up going to the kids, two of whom are gay.

  15. So, I'm confused. Is he marching in gay pride this year or isn't he? I'm not sure how I feel about his inclusion - this man is decidedly homophobic. I see his reports on "anti-catholicism" every year. He is one of those people who actively seeks out reasons to simultaneously offend people while claiming to be attacked. There is NO WAY this man is marching in pride to celebrate the LGBT community. He is marching in order to $h!! on it.

  16. I'm glad to see the Gay Pride parade welcome Bill Donohue to participate. This will be an excellent opportunity for Bill to demonstrate to everyone that he doesn't hate gay people and that he understands that true Christians are called to reach out and love one another.

Unfortunately, I predict Bill's irrational homophobic hatred will win out over the ideal of Christian love and he will find some excuse not to participate.

  18. We should make him Grand Marshall and put in in a convertible with Lady Bunny and Hedda Lettuce and have them shower him feather boas and big juicy lipstick prints all over his face.

  22. Bill is right about one thing... Hollywood lies all the time. But they like to advertise and cash in AS IF they're telling the truth.

"Based on Actual Events" = fiction
"Based on a True Story" = fiction
    etc.

  23. i still giggle that it's "Catholic League's Bill Donohue" - more like Catholic Leage *IS* Bill Donohue. It's one sad man. He ain't no league.

  24. San Francisco's Pride Parade use to have two contingents on the polar opposites. First Ruth Brinker, a straight grandmother who started Project Open Hand, which prepared and delivered free meals to PWA, because she saw her HIV infected neighbor wasting away. As her car travelled up Market St, the sound of applause and love for this woman preceded her like a rolling thunder clap.
On the other end of the spectrum (similar to Donohue, I would hope), was the car for NAMBLA. In liberal and tolerant San Fran, one could noticeably feel the dark, frigid wave of anger and disgust this group engendered, move along and through the crowd as their car progressed along the parade route. A similar response is what should be meted out to Donohue's contingent; he deserves nothing more or less.

  25. Oh goodie. I cannot wait to see Billy walkin' the parade route in his two size smaller tshirt, tight shorts showin' his little peanuts, and his belly hangin' out between the tshirt and shorts....I'll even kick in a pair of 70s mid-calf athletic socks with the big colored rings at the top...you go Billy!! March proud, hon.....
