  4. hmmm -if these two were not white, male, young and passably good looking - would you have placed this story? doubt it.
come on - neither is all that famous - you could even say they are basically unknown -
therefore, why in the world would they get this play other than their skin color, their relative youth and their decent looks -
unless you are making a policy of making these announcements for anyone who ever had their name in a program or a credit scroll or got published etc. -

  5. J - Towleroad has posted plenty of gay proposals and weddings of gay men of all shapes and colors. Maybe slow down with the dramatics.

  6. This site often spotlights Broadway performers and these two certainly fall into the category. Michael Arden, in particular, has been praised for his acting & singing talents at least as far back as his great interpretation of the role of Peter in the original NYC production of 'bare' back in 2004. He is also one of the best current interpreters of the Joni Mitchell songbook.
Find 2 men of color who are Broadway talents and are announcing their engagement on social media, and I bet they'd highlight that as well.

  7. I should stop reading the comments on Towleroad. It used to be that I learned something from reading them, but now most comments are negative and bitter. For every happy story posted on Towleroad, there will be more than a handful of people who rant negatively and inanely. (That is not a typo.)

  9. I would also like to say thank you to Andy and his staff - your site is indispensible, and a great source of information and news about the LGBT community and society. Please don' let the negative commenters discourage you.

  13. First, to the happy couple: CONGRATULATION

Second, Okay J, prove it. Show us a link of two men of color that work in the New York threater where Towleroad ignored their engagement announcement. YOU made the claim, now back it up.

If you don't, YOU are a NOM troll.

  14. I saw Andy Mientus at the KC stop of the Spring Awakening national tour. He was really good playing the bi/gay character Hanshen.

Michael Arden was also in the short lived television show "Kings" as the slightly unhinged boyfriend of the closeted heir to the throne. He was really, really good even though he had little screen time.

Congrats to both of them. They're awesome.

  17. While perhaps not well known to the general populace, both actors are very well-known in theatre circles. Mientus is currently on Broadway in LES MISERABLES playing Marius, the show's romantic lead.

    Congratulations to them both!

  22. Mientus was Kyle on Smash, season 2. It was a pretty big role and his character's trajectory was a major plot point. Sadly, his character did not really come alive until the very end of the series.
