Dominican Cardinal Tells U.S. Ambassador to ‘Take His Gay Pride Elsewhere’

Nicolás de Jesús López Rodríguez, a Catholic Cardinal from the Dominican Republic who has previously referred to U.S. Ambassador James “Wally” Brewster as a maricón (Spanish slur for “faggot”), is again voicing his displeasure with the idea of an openly gay man serving as ambassador to his Caribbean nation.

Dominican Today reports:

Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodríguez on Thursday again railed against the openly gay U.S. Ambassador, asking James Brewster to "take his pride elsewhere," and reminded him that diplomacy is used to promote relations, moral values, trade agreements and mutual cooperation among the world's countries.

"Diplomacy is not for that sort of thing, an absolutely negative propaganda," the Archbishop of Santo Domingo told reporters who asked about a video released by the U.S. Embassy, where Brewster and his husband Bob Satawake promote the celebration of "Gay Pride Month” in June.

The cardinal spoke after heading a mass to mark Corpus Christi in San Antonio parish, in the Gazcue sector.

"I am totally against that, everybody knows it, my position is not new, not because this man with this kind of attitude has now arrived."

When Brewster was first nominated last year, a group of conservative Dominican Republic religious leaders organized a 'black armband' protest against what was seen as an "insult to good Dominican customs"

  2. Said the man wearing a skirt and tiara-
You can't even pretend to tow the party line by your fearless leader-Frank- at least he pretends to be less fascist than most of his predecessors dressed in drag. The Holy See has not an ounce of credibility speaking about anything relevant in the world today-most notably-human rights and dignity. They know nothing of either while still basing their beliefs on an imaginary being that does not exist. Clean up your own house herr cardinal.

  3. Another classless, bigot Cardinal. Another example of how true it is that today's leaders of the Catholic Church are enemies of LGBT people.

  4. glad wally's there. i lived in the dr, and gays there really need help. gay slurs are completely acceptable--it's like the 1970s in the states. and the combination of this class-less ass cardinal and the huge contingent of wacky evangelicals is awful. still, i love the dr. what a fun place with smart and seriously entertaining people. I hope the gays there are rallying around wally and gaining visibility.

  5. The scarlet dunce does not even acknowledge the hundreds of thousands of DOMINICAN LGBTI people that he shoves under his rusty bus...any LGBTI person knows what a trip to Republica Deominicana means: Adventure, Romance and LOVE!

  7. A Catholic Cardinal in a country that purportedly has one of the highest levels of child sex trafficking (and human trafficking in general)? Yes, what could go wrong there. Gee, sure am glad he's speaking out against gays rather than, oh, I dunno, all the freakin' women and children being FORCED INTO SLAVERY in his country.

  9. You sit there in your expensive robes saying that people shouldn't be pushing an agenda? Um, what are you doing, Kind Fairy?

  10. And it's LGB - people with T issues are not our issue. And forget that stupid I, too.

  11. And we should listen to this child rape supporter why exactly?

  12. @WOODY :

That's disappointing to hear that the poison of the evangelicals has spread to Dominican Republic.

The Catholic Church is now just a one trick speaks of sex sex sex....particularly gay sex, it defines gays as 'intrinsically defective' , then puts up a pretence of Christianity.

  13. So, Pope Frank says the Catholic Church shouldn't focus so much on 'the gay'...what kind of disciplinary action will be taken against the sub-human, anti-spiritual, inept cardinals under his charge , like this ignorant fellow and his compatriot in San Francisco?

  14. How is it internationally diplomatic to call someone a maricon? Maybe it is better to vacation in Puerto Rico...

  16. Okay Everyone -

I'm done with watching all this wash over and, short of a written article, nothing being done. I wrote Pope Francis a letter telling him about this bad Cardinal, enclosed the Towleroad articles, and cc:ed James Brewster. Let's stop discussing and debating, and let's get some action for the price of an international stamp, especially since Pope Francis isn't afraid to tackle anything that's not good for the Church.

(FYI - The US Embassy moved last weekend - This is the new address)

    His Holiness, Pope Francis
    Apostolic Palace
    00120 Vatican City

    Ambassador James Brewster
    US Embassy - Dominican Republic
    Av. República de Colombia #57

  17. A movement needs to be undertaken to close down the Catholic Church. These people are sick people.

  18. Religion couldn't be further removed from what Christ preached. There's research indicating He spoke against calling another a fag when He said, in Matthew, "Whomever calls his brother 'raca'..."

Gay men are again mentioned twice in the Gospels. Jesus met a gay man, via the Roman centurion, and said of him, "Never have I seen faith greater than this.". He agains mentions gay men as 'born eunuchs' as one of the three types of men not meant to marry women. At no time does He condemn homosexuality.

The most passionate love story in the Bible happens to he between two men.

Gandhi said it best with, "I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."

  19. This kind of celebration didn't just take place in Dominican embassy. It took place in many US embassies around the world. He should air his displeasure to John Kerry or Obama. Which will be summarily dismissed.

  21. It's time to wage war on the Catholic Church. Can anyone explain to me why the priests of my elementary school lived in an anti-bellum mansion with servants? Or why the Bishop Robert Lynch of St Petersburg lives in a four bedroom waterfront pool home in an exclusive neighborhood?

  23. Well, isn't that Christ-like? Calling someone a faggot. Hopefully in a few more centuries mankind will totally abandon all belief in mythical magical beings floating up in the sky and looking down on all of us. ALL religion is man made and full of absurdities and nonsense.

  24. There's that love and tolerance the Catholic church has become so famous for thanks to a number of ignorant clergymen pretending to be speaking on behalf of God.
