Video of Cop Allegedly Violently Assaulting Woman at Gay Pride Emerges on Facebook: VIDEO

Pittsburgh_pride

A video posted by Jenna Renee Kenny on Facebook shared more than 5,600 times shows what appears to be a police officer violently assaulting a woman at a Pittsburgh's Pride in the Street festival which took place on Saturday..

Wrote Kenny: "EVERYONE WATCH THIS!! This happened right in front of me at pride today. & please share he's a prick & shouldn't get away with it. He was smiling the whole time after he got her in cuffs."

The alleged assault occurs after a voice is heard over a loudspeaker saying "Well now she is getting arrested."

It's unclear what happened before or after the video was shot. We'll post more details if they become available.

There is a duplicate YouTube video, AFTER THE JUMP...

UPDATE: The mayor's office is launching a full investigation. WTAE has posted transcripts of the criminal complaint and statements by the arresting officer.

  1. Don't know what happened before the video. But if it's pride and it seems like a quiet pride, the cop seems over excessive. He is really gutting her and she is a small girl. Can't believe they let someone like him work pride. 1 step forward two back.

  2. Well it is CLEAR she apparently shouts "F-CK OFF!" in the cop's face, was it preceded by a spit in the face? I'd like to think that if a cop is working a Gay Pride event that they're there to keep the peace and just not only there to beat up people. We'll see, right?

  3. hey @Mike, I'm pretty sure telling a cop to F off doesn't warrant a beating. Teenage girls mouth off all the time, doesn't mean you should beat them up. Did she spit in his face, who knows? Why would you assume that though. I've had the cops beat me up for far less, sometimes they just don't like the cut of your jib.

  4. Hard to make out what exactly led to the officer getting violent. And I agree with the others. The fact she tells him to "F... off!" didn't help.

  5. NO one should be beaten - ever! The cop should be fired.

We started Pride off with a great World Naked Bike Ride this weekend in SF. Take a look:

  6. This seems pretty misleading. I want to know exactly what happened before this.

  7. "Did she spit in his face, who knows? Why would you assume that though."

Because the cop became suddenly very violent with her. How would you feel if she didn't like your "jib" and did that?

  8. Police officers who abuse their authority and assault people they're taking into custody should be subject to capital punishment. Until we as a society understand this, we will continue to live in a police state. Until people serving on juries refuse to accept police officers' testimony as true, and refuse to convict defendants based on poice testimony, this country will continue to live in a police state. Jury nullification is the surest way to make politicians and police commissioners enact reforms.

Note today's article that a police officer who assaulted an Occupy Wall Street protester was awarded a TAX-FREE diability retirement of $120,000 for supposed "injuries" he "suffered" during the assault. Police like those should be serving life sentences at a minimum, and should be subject to capital punishment prosecutions, up to and including the most severe punishments statutorily allowable.

  9. @Mike, Obviously I would be upset, but do you really think that would justify a beating? I would have to have a damn good excuse to rough up a teenager, and you would think a cop would have to have an even better one. Maybe you aren't aware of this, but the police in this country aren't known for their even tempers. The second to last time I got roughed up by the police I don't even know what I did. I saw the cop, and then BAM! I was on the ground, I've never been hit so hard in my life. It isn't an unusual story either, happens all the time.

  10. Uh huh. That's not an assault. When the police instruct you to move or to lie down, you comply. If you don't comply, they have the right to use force to procure compliance. If you think the police are in the wrong, you should still comply and then file a complaint later.

The vast majority of these physical altercations with police arise out of the belief that a police instruction is just a suggestion which can be ignored.

  14. There should be a special Guantánamo for law enforcement swine like that.

  15. I'm getting tired of people provoking cops and then complaining when they get called out for it. There was obviously some altercation prior to the start of the video that we didn't see.

Rules for Dealing with Cops: 1) Be respectful. 2) Do as you are told. 3) Don't touch or be aggressive. If your inflated ego believes you have special privileges and do not have to obey the officer, be prepared to accept the consequences. If you resist arrest prepare for the officer to use whatever force he/she feels is necessary to subdue you.

The police in this country regularly deal with the scummiest people our pathetic culture has created. They routinely deal with drunks, addicts and the mentally ill. They have the toughest job out there and I'm glad they have the ability to use force when needed. There might be some bad cops out there, but there are also a lot of assholes who just like to make trouble.

  16. A lot of people seeming to make excuses for someone verbally assaulting and possibly spitting on a police officer. Remember that next time someone calls you a f@g. It's "just words!" "Teenage girls use it all the time!" Right?

    Posted by: Hrm | Jun 16, 2014 2:30:21 PM

  17. @HRM

You see, when a person becomes a police officer and gets to carry around a gun, tazer, baton, cuffs, etc, and is allowed to use force under certain circumstances, they are held to a higher standard than dumb f***s like you and others of the lowest common denominator who may not be in control of their own actions.

Police officers are supposed to be in control of themselves.

But you're right about one thing; call me a f** to my face and you'll lose yours.

Law enforcement attracts some borderline SCUM in order to deal with the scummiest element of society. Law-abiding citizens DO NOT have to allow themselves to be abused by police officers when they lose control and allow themselves to merge with the scum they're supposed to be protecting the rest of society from. Mainstream society needs to demand that police officers follow their commission to Serve and Protect, not Attack and Abuse.

  19. @FIGHT BACK!
I think most cops just want to get through their shift without being verbally or physically assaulted, stabbed, shot, spit at, or killed.

And law abiding citizens, no matter how righteous they are in their own minds, need to obey an officers orders. Even if they disagree.

    Posted by: Arkansassy | Jun 16, 2014 7:00:51 PM

  20. How quickly they forget! The Stonewall riots occurred because citizens refused to obey the unlawful orders of cops. The quislings here would have us still cowering under an oppressive police force. Santanyana rolls in his grave.

Jack- you are flat wrong. No one is under an obligation to obey an unlawful order from the police. Would it be prudent, certainly. But the cops do not have a right to push people around (although they and apparently a mindless contingent around here think they do). Read up on the fourth amendment.

Arkansassy- it doesn't matter what the cops "want" from their shift, they are officers sworn to uphold the law. They do not get a personal exemption from this duty. If they don't like the responsibilities of the job, they should look for employment elsewhere, just like the rest of us.

  21. check out the links AND the video people- the vid is only 16 seconds- she was apparently arguing and assaulting some anti-gay protester (not a good image for the community)nd the cop tried to break it up. The crowd began swarming around him and this girl, and she was bucking him, hitting him, and grabbing is chest, vest, clothes. She apologized later, stating she didn't realize he was a cop.
So yes, after she'd started attacking a cop, and he tried to get her away from hitting another person, he tried to disable her to handcuff her. Better than using deadly force.
I'm def not an apologist for excessive police force/police brutality; however, I loathe idiots who make unnecessary situations like this happen- it gives us a bad name and image. We're the ones in the right- we don't use force to get our points across (Im speaking to this girl' assault on an anti-gay protester).

  22. I haven't read anything about the officer getting spit on. one poster speculated that it could have happened. She could have tuck a firecracker up his ass, but there is nothing in the article to suggest that she did.

What ticks me off is that the crowd stood by and watch, like gay crowds always do when someone is attacked. There is no way that cop would have gotten away with that at Black People Day.

    Posted by: Enchantra | Jun 16, 2014 9:52:22 PM

  23. @JAR
It's kind of insulting to compare this person's disrespectful behavior toward a group of protestors to Stonewall. Apples and Oranges.

    Posted by: Arkansassy | Jun 16, 2014 11:47:23 PM

  24. Sorry, but Blacks in America have been unjustly beaten by white police officers for many years without any repercussions. Not much sympathy from me on this one.

    Posted by: You're Irritating | Jun 17, 2014 4:10:21 AM

  25. There's a better video out on the net. She did not spit in his face or anything of the sort. She is yelling at the anti-gay protestors, the cop approaches her and clotheslines her with his forearm, and this video picks up the rest. In his official report, the cop claims she assaulted him by hitting him in his groin, belt area, etc. and that other onlookers assaulted him. As you can tell by the video, one of this happened. Pittsburgh is having too many problems with police brutality, and so many are caught on tape that you wonder about what isn't.
