Jeremy Irons to Face Protesters Over Anti-Gay Marriage Remarks

The group Gay USA is organizing a protest of Jeremy Irons at the opening of his film Trashed at the Energy for Tomorrow Conference in New York tonight sponsored by the New York Times. It's scheduled for 6 pm at 55 w. 59th street.

IronsWrites the group:

TELL JEREMY IRONS: STOP TRASHING GAY RIGHTS

Jeremy Irons wants us to take him seriously when it comes to addressing the trash crisis. From all indications, he is right. But lately he has undermined his credibility and his right to be taken seriously through bigoted and offensive statements questioning the right of gay couples to marry, saying that it would "debase" marriage and would lead to fathers marrying their sons for tax benefits -- even though no such thing has happened anywhere in the world where same-sex marriage is legal.

Irons' non-apology apologies on this issue acknowledge that he is uninformed on the issue. Here he is trying to educate the world on a very real environmental crisis and he cannot take ten minutes to talk to one of his gay friends and get educated on a vital human rights issue such as marriage equality? Every time his "apologizes" he makes another dumb comment.

Tell Jeremy Irons to stop trashing gay people and to learn the facts about the justice of opening marriage to same-sex couples before saying one more word on the subject. Irons has hurt the cause of gay rights by feeding into ignorance and it hurting the environmental cause by demonstrating that he often does not know what he is talking about.

If you missed Irons' asinine remarks, you can see them here and here.

Jeremy Irons: 'Marriage is About Procreation' — VIDEO

Irons

Actor Jeremy Irons who recently made headlines with his remarks that allowing gays to marry might mean that a father would marry his son for tax purposes, and that gay marriage would "debase" the institution, was asked about that comment by the BBC this week.

Irons responded with the current lead right wing homophobe talking point:

"Well it changes it, doesn't it. Marriage is about procreation, really. That's historically how it's always been."

Irons added later that he wishes he'd "buttoned [his] lip" about the issue.

Jeremy Irons Reacts to Outrage: I'm Not 'Anti-Gay' But I'm Still Concerned About Father-Son Marriage

Jeremy Irons has posted a letter in response to public outrage over his recent chat with the HuffPost in which he said he was worried that giving gays marriage might "debase" the institution and expressed concerns that a father might marry his son".

IronWrites Irons in a letter posted to JeremyIrons.net:

I am deeply concerned that from my on line discussion with the Huffington Post, it has been understood that I hold a position that is anti gay. This is as far from the truth of me as to say that I believe the earth is flat.

I was taking part in a short discussion around the practical meaning of Marriage, and how that institution might be altered by it becoming available to same-sex partners. Perhaps rather too flippantly I flew the kite of an example of the legal quagmire that might occur if same sex marriage entered the statute books, by raising the possibility of future marriage between same sex family members for tax reasons, (incest being illegal primarily in order to prevent inbreeding, and therefore an irrelevance in non reproductive relationships). Clearly this was a mischievous argument, but nonetheless valid.

I am clearly aware that many gay relationships are more long term, responsible and even healthier in their role of raising children, than their hetero equivalents, and that love often creates the desire to mark itself in a formal way, as Marriage would do. Clearly society should find a way of doing this.

I had hoped that even on such a subject as this, where passions run high, the internet was a forum where ideas could be freely discussed without descending into name-calling. I believe that is what it could be, but it depends on all of us behaving, even behind our aliases, in a humane, intelligent and open way.

I've reposted the HuffPost Live interview, AFTER THE JUMP...

Stephen Colbert Ridicules Jeremy Irons' Gay Marriage Remarks: VIDEO

Irons_colbert

On Wednesday, Jeremy Irons pondered what giving gays marriage might bring:

"Could a father not marry his son?" Irons asked HuffPost Live host Josh Zepps. Irons argued that "it's not incest between men" because "incest is there to protect us from inbreeding, but men don't breed," and wondered whether same-sex marriage might allow fathers to pass on their estates to their sons without being taxed.

Said Colbert: "So, if gay marraige is legalized in England - Jeremy Irons' son Max? Get ready to make your father the happiest man alive. After all, you've been together for 27 years. It's time to put a ring on it."

Jeremy Irons Worries That Giving Gays Marriage Might 'Debase' It, Says Father and Son Might Marry: VIDEO

Iron

Actor Jeremy Irons has concerns about same-sex marriage, he tells HuffPost Live:

"Could a father not marry his son?" Irons asked HuffPost Live host Josh Zepps. Irons argued that "it's not incest between men" because "incest is there to protect us from inbreeding, but men don't breed," and wondered whether same-sex marriage might allow fathers to pass on their estates to their sons without being taxed.

"It seems to me that now they're fighting for the name," Irons said of advocates for same-sex marriage as opposed to civil unions. "I worry that it means somehow we debase, or we change, what marriage is. I just worry about that."

Irons added that he wishes "everybody who's living with one other person the best of luck in the world."
