John Cameron Mitchell was honored at the 2015 Tony Awards with a special award for his return to the stage in the Broadway revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Mitchell was the original Hedwig in the 1998 off-Broadway production. Hedwig's heels are currently being filled by Glee heartthrob Darren Criss, who will be replaced in July by Taye Diggs.
