"Underwhelmed"

Bm009

The Cannes Film Festival line-up will be announced in less than a fortnight but the selection of Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger is "looking wobbly" according to Variety, which reported today that although the festival looks to be chock-full of American films, the selection committee was "underwhelmed" by the gay cowboy drama.

  1. That's too bad. I hoped that the subject matter would at least compare to the publicity generated by the casting and subject matter.

    Have you heard anything ele?

  2. As long as I get to see Jake and Heath have passionate sex repeatedly--hardcore stuff with visible penetration--I'll be happy.

What? No penetration? Well, damn. What's this world coming to? :(

  3. This could be a good thing though... remember how Roger Ebert absolutely lambasted THE BROWN BUNNY after it was screened at Cannes? Well, after the initial mud-slinging, Vincent Gallo went back to the "drawing board", re-edited it (drastically) and produced a final film that Ebert gave a "thumbs up".

Even if Ang Lee rushed BBM to get it to Cannes, he's still got a good 8 months to produce a (better) final cut for theatrical release.

  5. Screw Cannes. The fantasies I've enjoyed imagining Jake and Heath in this film have already made it an extremely satisfying experience for me. *sigh*

  6. I'm sure that Ang, in his attempt to make the movie a "beautiful story" about "love", completely missed the opportunity to bring hot gay sex to a mainstream audience. I too have feared that the film will not be anywhere near as compelling as the story.

  7. If the Ang Lee film doesn't make any waves, let's hope big homo exec Scott Rudin gets behind producing that movie about two highway police officers who meet cute on the road, fall madly in love, and decide to explore all the hot and passionate possibilities that hardcore gay sex has to offer them.

It's called "Hardcore Highway" and Matthew McConnaughy and Tom Cruise are thisclose to being signed for the leads, despite warnings from their publicists and their mutual beard, Nicole-Kidman-wannabe, Mz Penelope Cruz.
