Exclusive Preview: Survivor Palau's Jeff Wilson

Jeffwtr01

I'm fully aware that National Underwear Day is done and over, but, actually, we're celebrating it again today. I'm happy to be the first to share these photos of Survivor Palau's Jeff Wilson. I'm sorry to have missed the first half of the Palau season because I obviously missed a contestant worth watching. Jeff was fifth to be voted off the island after an ankle injury but he obviously didn't let the loss get him down. Friend of Towleroad Lewis Payton took the following photos, which are from the upcoming issue of Australia's DNA magazine.

Lewis had this to say about the shoot:

"I saw Jeff Wilson on Survivor and he immediately grabbed my attention. Obviously he's extremely good looking, but there was something very engaging and sincere about him. Jeff Probst (host of Survivor) said Wilson is 'like a light in a room, he energizes everyone and makes you smile.' This perfectly describes our shoot experience. Jeff is quirky, complex, generous of spirit and simply the most up and at 'em guy I've ever met. I've never laughed so much in a shoot and I was genuinely sad when we were done.

If he ever decided to pursue acting, I truly believe he'd be a star. But at this point in his life, he seems focused on having a good time with his buddies in Ventura and becoming a firefighter. Which, in a world where it feels like everyone wants to be famous, I think is great. Jeff is gracing the cover of DNA's annual Sexiest Men Alive issue, out Sept 1 (later in US/Europe)."

Enjoy the pics and click these two for larger versions...

  1. Everyday should be National Underwear Day... and a little speedo is not a bad idea either!

Hear hear! One up for diversity.

  5. Hey guys, I'm totally up for that. If someone wants to offer me an exclusive shoot featuring hot Asian, black, or Latino guys please email me. But beggars can't be choosers. Right now, I'm just publishing what I am offered. I prefer to showcase work that hasn't been seen before. So, I hope you enjoy it.

  6. Once again without knowing the facts the critics come out. Can't we just enjoy the hot guy without the politics. And he is a hot guy!

    Posted by: Donald | Aug 17, 2005 9:53:14 AM

  7. Donald

I don't think anyone is being unduly critical here. No one is doubting that Jeff Wilson *is* a hottie and for that, one is ever grateful to Andy for posting these original never-seen-before pics. However, I also think it's reasonable to hope for a more diverse representation of hot men. One's reach must exceed one's grasp, or what is Towleroad for? :)

  8. Delicious. Thanks Andy!

  9. My point was why does everything have to be made into some political statement.
I am a political junky. I have an unused college degree to support that. But, jeez can't we just look at a hot guy and enjoy him without making a statement about what it is lacking and not for the appreciation of what he is. A hot guy.

Sam you are correct no one was being critical, I apologise for jumping to that assumption and I note your point about reaching.

  10. Yes, a true hottie. I agree with th diversity remarks, how 'bout some body hair? Woof!!

  14. Jeff is for sure one of the most beautiful men in the world. He should do a calendar with just himself. The top photo with the underwear is my favorite. Regarding the last picture I hope Jeff can bring the Speedo back into fashion. It's so disappointing to go to the beach (I live in Ft Lauderdale)and see a good looking man in those really long swim trunks.

Can you get a link for more info on Jeff. Like who is he dating, what is his exercise routine, etc etc ...

    Thanks for answering my question!

  18. Okay, Andy.. you can't post ever again. I want that picture as the first thing I see every morning! :)

  19. That boy has beefed way up since Survivor. But it still don't work for me - all I can envision when I view these pix is his incessant whining on Palau about his poor, sprained ankle.

  20. when jeff was voted out of survivor palau i was really disappointed. he was the hottest guy on the whole show and was the most interesting. i really enjoyed every time he was on the screen.

thanks andy and lewis for promoting such a hottie :-) really made my day seeing these photos

  21. Signature style or ennui reminder? One knew immediately it was a Payton photo: the full lighting, the ripped abs, the cheerful smile, the distant and slightly muffled sexuality, the almost anime sheen to the flesh. Photos that reveal little about the model other than a clearly obessive diet, beautiful, no doubt, yet caged in the wilderness of nothingness. How lovely to get lost in that wilderness.

    Posted by: rexless | Aug 17, 2005 1:22:59 PM

  22. Great eye candy. More more!

    Muscle stocky is hot though.

    Posted by: Damon | Aug 17, 2005 2:01:31 PM

  25. I went to the Payton website and despite the treasure trove of young beauties, I was struck by the TOTAL lack of diversity....I dare say there is not one black, asian, or latin for that matter. While it must be heaven to photograph your type over and over again, as an artist, surely one can see the beauty in all men. It would be great to see what Mr Payton would do with men other than the lean, muscled white men that pervade his website.

    Posted by: art | Aug 17, 2005 2:38:41 PM

  26. Ozone Dude, it wasn't a sprained ankle, it was more serious and required surgery straight after the show. Plus Jeff never whined, he sucked it up and tried to compete in challenges and then told his tribe to vote him off as their weakest link.

    Posted by: Charlie | Aug 17, 2005 2:42:08 PM

  27. Oh, dear. I feel another eating disorder coming on ...

    Posted by: Jake | Aug 17, 2005 2:46:09 PM

  28. Art

I too went to Mr Payton's site and left with a vague sense of disquiet, despite the surfeit of eye candies present. Thanks for articulating what I had felt, yet couldn't quite pin-point, at the time. Yes, it would be interesting to see how he would photograph a more varied range of musculine beauties representative of the diverse society we live in.

    Posted by: jasper | Aug 17, 2005 3:10:39 PM

  29. What's wrong with a photographer who has found a niche that (i) he enjoys, and (ii) he's good at (though opinion may vary). He's a photog for chrisakes....His role is not to promote diversity. If you like his work, enjoy it. If not, move on. Sort of like changing the channel, no?

Why is everything such a big deal around here? Sheeesh!

    Posted by: Jon | Aug 17, 2005 3:22:58 PM

  30. Before anyone jumps on Jon and Art for their comments, let me say that they certainly have a point.

My site in its current form is specifically focussed on fashion/models leaning somewhat towards the fitness end of the spectrum. Nearly all models in this part of the business are caucasian. And since I source most of my models from the top agencies in NY and LA, I work with the selection of guys on their books, most of whom are caucasian. But when other opportunities present themselves, I am the first to take them. I recently did a shoot with Baltimore Ravens footballer Will Demps, an African American/Korean guy who is absolutely stunning and was great to shoot.

My desire is to ultimately work with people of every ethnicity, gender, religion and sexuality. I would hate to think that in ten years I'd look back and see only hot caucasian males in my body of work. All these things come together gradually, as it takes a lot of time and money to set up a single shoot. Unlike many photographers, I am not a trust fund kid, and I'm yet to be in the financial arena that would allow me to shoot any more models than I currently do and most of these shoots are for magazines who cast the models I shoot.

When the time is right, my website will be completely updated. In the meantime, I would hope that rather than causing disquiet, my work is simply enjoyed for the beauty, albeit limited in spectrum, that is currently on display.

  31. Wow! Thanks, Andy and Lewis, for these photos of Jeff. He is one gorgeous man. My favorite is the fourth one: Jeff certainly has a great smile. I can't wait for next month's issue of DNA. Thanks, William, for mentioning Andy's interview in the current issue of DNA. Andy, I enjoyed your terrific interview and sexy photo. Fantastic!

    Posted by: Giovanni | Aug 17, 2005 4:14:00 PM

  32. I agree with Reckless. There is something creepily similar about all Payton models. Even their abs look the same. Yes, he certainly has a style, but its a style that seems to steamroll all individuality out of his models.

As to the complaints about diversity, I might have been willing to cut the photographer some slack until he commented above. Wow. Talk about talking the talk but not walking the walk. Only trust fund babies can have a diverse portfolio? Oh, and my favorite - he blames the agencies! LOL! Yeah, right, it's all their fault. Nice try.

    Posted by: cafegogo | Aug 17, 2005 4:41:54 PM

  33. The only creepy similarity around here is the spiteful bile coming out of the mouths of people here. Were we not reading the same comment above?? From my take, Lewis Payton isn't blaming anyone, he's simply describing the business he works in. I think his stunning portfolio is far broader than the minds of some towleroad readers and I'm looking forward to more in the future.

As Andy said, if you don't enjoy what's on display here, simply choose to look elsewhere instead of so personally attacking someone willing to share their creative art.

    Posted by: Charles | Aug 17, 2005 5:27:02 PM

  34. Neither Andy nor Lewis has an obligation to provide a diverse set of models. Period.

They may simply be presenting what interests them, and that is FINE people. If you want to see something else, it's as easy as typing in another web address. You all act as if this site (which is a personal site I might add) is beholden to every rule of political correctness. It's not, and shouldn't be.

Let's say this was a site about birds and Andy was really interested in parakeets and showed a lot of pictures of parakeets. Would he be castigated for not publishing pictures of eagles or crows or seagulls simply because he was obligated to bow down to someone else's "ideal of diversity" on his personal site for chrissakes?

You people are out of your minds. If you want to look at something different, go to another website.

If you want to see Diane Arbus, go to a Diane Arbus show. If you want to see Mapplethorpe, go to a Mapplethorpe show. If you want to see Ansel Adams, go to an Ansel Adams show. But don't expect Ansel Adams to give you a friggin Diane Arbus, and don't expect the museum that is hosting the Ansel Adams show to be obligated to show you that Arbus out of respect for "diversity". You people are crazy.

Do you write Bel Ami video letters of complaint because you like leather daddies and all they have in their videos are shaved twinks? No, you pick out another video.

Oh, and I was eating dinner at this Mexican restaurant the other night but I got up and left because they wouldn't serve me a French Pastry. Those fucking bigots. I'll never eat there again.

You're never going to please everyone. Thankfully, there's enough variety of culture in this country and on the internet that we can all find something we like.

Stop blaming Andy and Lewis for a personal aggravation you can correct yourselves.

    Posted by: william | Aug 17, 2005 5:42:44 PM

  35. But Charles, what's really interesting (potentially) about all of the comments which Andy allows us to post is this; we look at the same images, we read the same comments, and we all have strikingly different takes. I think that's fascinating.

If it's true that some of us like a diversity of images, then why not a diversity of opinion, too?

As to the supposed personal attack on my part, I certainly don't believe I "attacked" - but there's another difference of opinion.

Moreover, I assume that Payton is a big boy and can take whatever comments come his way. After all, he opened the door by posting his own comments here, which were maybe more illuminating then he intended them to be.

    Posted by: cafegogo | Aug 17, 2005 5:49:06 PM

  36. enough of the goddamned racial crap already. if you don't like this site, no one is forcing you to click onto it.

    Posted by: CriticalRN | Aug 17, 2005 5:54:09 PM

  37. William, no no no. Don't take all the fun out of Andy's blog. Half the fun here- besides Andy's terrific content - is the running commentary that follows. If we're all just supposed to step in line and nod our heads and go, "Mmm, yes, me likie all of it," then what's the point of having a blog?

    Posted by: cafegogo | Aug 17, 2005 5:54:59 PM

  38. There are plenty of blogs without areas to comment and frankly, I'm surprised Andy hasn't turned that option off yet given the amount of unconstructive bitterness that always seems to be generated by a vocal few.

    Posted by: william | Aug 17, 2005 6:05:08 PM

  39. Yes, you're right, there are blogs out there without comment pages. And how boring is that? Let's all read "Newsweek." Or "Out." Blech.

You have to admit, there's something interesting going on when a few pretty-boy pictures generate THIS MUCH heated discussion and commentary (unconstructive or not), from how the model looks, to his hotness or not, to discussions about race, to the financial obstacles faced by professional photographers. I hope Andy doesn't turn the comment pages off (though this is my last comment on this particular page) (I swear). :)

    Posted by: cafegogo | Aug 17, 2005 6:16:56 PM

  40. You guys are INSANE! Andy and Lewis clearly are into white athletic models and so am I, if your aesthetic is not there's, move on. I never thought I'd be defending either of them, but this hyper-PC crap is just too much.

Thanks Lewis for some hot, beautifully done photos of a great guy and thank you Andy for posting them.

    Posted by: Mitch | Aug 17, 2005 6:31:32 PM

  41. First off, I think its great that Lewis acknowledged that he is lacking diversity in his portfolio...I thought his explanation was reasonable, and he will probably turn out stunning images. But really, I need to say that Williams response is about the most ridiculous perspective I have ever read. Towleroad is about gay men, and the last time I looked, that included alot of nonwhite individuals, though many did look like paraqueets. I don't think anyone is blaming Andy or Lewis, it not about blame. I suppose to William, if a book is called one world, it's just his world. I suppose if you went to Klu Klux Klan rally and complained that there was no diversity, you would be out of line, oh change that channel! Just silly. The point is, just like we need gay mentors, and heroes, people of diversity NEED to see themselves on these pages, they need to be photographed by Lewis Payton, and we in turn get to see that beauty is colorless, raceless. Does anyone have an obligation? Does a magazine have an olbligation to be racially inclusive? Does Hollywood have to be inclusive? To me, diversity simply keeps things interesting, culturally, creatively and intellectually (ok, and sexually). And personally, I love reading the comments. Sure, people get bitchy, people get misunderstood, people offend, and on and on....its just that diversity HERE, that keep Towleroad one of the most interesting blogs in the world.

    Posted by: art | Aug 17, 2005 6:57:39 PM

  42. I'm just a very grateful guy. I wanted to see more of Jeff (gone far too soon from Survivor) and I can't imagine anyone would bring him to me better than Lewis Payton. Both Jeff and Lewis seem like decent guys amid the catfighting (of Palau and the blogoshpere, respectively). Thanks very much!

    Posted by: toby | Aug 17, 2005 6:59:27 PM

  43. Blogs without comment are boring? You mean like DEFAMER? Yeah what a YAWN that site is! Andy, lose the comments, keep the content. People can always email you (or Lewis, or George Bush or whoever they please) if they have something interesting to say. This drivel just spoils what is otherwise a great daily read.

    Posted by: Joe | Aug 17, 2005 7:04:26 PM

  44. Over 40 comments about a hot straight (I guess) guy and 8 comments about a Christian Camp that abused a Christian kid or Chinese teaching courses on Homosexuality. I love being a gay man hot guys rule.

I have to admit I enjoyed these comments we can take the most mundane topic a Hot Guy and have a real discussion. Please Andy leave the comments

    Posted by: Donald | Aug 17, 2005 7:15:14 PM

  45. Jeff is pretty cute with a nice body (though hairless), but I noticed on Survivor and now here that it doesn't look like he's packing much heat down low where it counts. Sorry, but I've become a bit of a size queen, at least with pics and porn, not necessarily lovers. ;-)

  48. I'm sorry, I have to disagree with the poster who thinks that diversity is about politics. As far as I'm concerned, it's an issue of inclusion, not something that is just a hot plate issue; it affects real people and real lives.

Speaking as a gay man of color, I have to say that it can be exceedingly depressing to see yet another white pin-up that everybody drools after. Yes, he's hot, but he's also someone that I can never be, and when model after model after pinup is white, I begin to think that color is not attractive, that being beautiful means being white.

Let me put it this way - not too long ago, there was a lot of desire in the community to see gay men and women on tv. We knew we existed but the world seemed to want to pretend that we didnt, and that's devastating. I, personally, found it easier to come out having watched Philadelphia and movies like it when I was younger.

And I think the same is true with hot men of color that you can look up to. So thanks so much Andy for all of the beefcake :) I'll try a bit harder to find hotter mancandy of color, because vanilla, though nice, is not the only flavor ice cream I'd like to eat ;)

  68. We just got Survivor here in South Africa. I must admit I wasn't terribly interested until I saw my new boy Jeff.

He has an awesome body. I don't think mine will turn out quite like that but I'm going to be close. Genetics are a bitch.

I've been looking around to find more detail on this boy but haven't found too much. Specifically if he's family or not? Straight men I've come accross don't have a body obsession like that. I know all us gay boys in this part of the world are all in love with him already and we've only had one episode of Survivor.

Pity we'll only see him on our screens for a little while. I'll have to record every episode till he leaves :(

  72. I've been photographing models & actors for over 20 years here in the Los Angeles area and in Lewis Payton's defense, a lot of times it's the luck of the draw as to who ends up in front of our cameras. We can go after certain types of models hoping to diversify our portfolios, but it's not a given that they're going to respond to our requests to photograph them. And sometimes, even if we're lucky enough to get some diversity in terms of ethnicity, skin color, celebrity status, etc., there's no guarantee that the pictures are going to be good enough to go into the book that sells us.

And sometimes it's a matter of who the agencies send to test with us.

It was Lewis' work with Steve Sandvoss that helped me realize that Sandvoss was somebody I wanted to work with. I checked out Lewis' website looking for more pix of Sandvoss and far from feeling like there was something missing there, I realized that I was seeing the work of somebody who had a particular style and some really good skills.

As photographers we're often hired more on the basis of our style and skills rather than on the diversity of our portfolios. Art directors look for style, not diversity. When they're shopping around for a photographer and see a continuity in the work it helps them make their choice.

Lewis' work is far more defineable than mine and therefore he probably works more than I do. In the the early years of my career I fell in with a very ethnically diverse crowd and my portfolio reflects it. But my book is a lot harder sell than Lewis' is because of that diversity.

I'm not sure why the sensitivity when it comes to photographers who work with more of one ethnic type than another. It feels like a subtle demand that our work reflect racial demographics rather than the expression of our artistry. Is this same between-the-lines demand being made of Black photographers?

Some heavy judgements have been made here about Lewis' "white" portfolio. I don't share them. I see the work of a photographer with whom models are comfortable and at their best. I see the work of somebody who understands light and knows how to get beautiful skin tones in his color work. And I see the work of somebody who has a lot of sensitivity for the guys he works with and their bodies.

My guess is that a Black, Latino or Asian model would get just as much from Lewis as a white model and that what we're seeing in his portfolio is a reflection of availability and marketability rather than a personal bias.

Portfolios, more often than not, are meant to sell us rather than express the minutae of our personal biases.

  73. Jeff has one of the most incredibly sculpted torsos I've ever seen. And the Payton shots are artful and show Jeff to all his glory. Any word on whether Jeff has a Web site? And yes, most of the Payton models seem similar--sililar in how incredibly well built they are, and how well they are photographed. As for diversity, look, if a photographer wants to shoot only blonds with 8-packs and 16.5" arms, I say 1) that's his right, and 2) let me see the pics!
