Harriet Miers withdraws from SCOTUS consideration. Bush: "It is clear that senators would not be satisfied until they gained access to internal documents concerning advice provided during her tenure at the White House — disclosures that would undermine a president's ability to receive candid counsel."

Who's bringing the champagne? It may be too early to celebrate the belated slide of Bush the Second into historical oblivion or infamy, but I for one am thrilled that Mr. Never Surrender has finally had his stubborn Texass beaten like a drum. And, even if there are no CIA leak indictments, I luv it that they are, at this point, still left squirming in their Sears boxers over what may happen. Instead of spending his college years bombed on coke and booze and broads and perfecting his banty rooster strut, he should have taken a little time out to study History. One word: NIXON.

Don't go jumping up and down yet. There were at least some indications that Miers (while hardly a moderate) might not have been a completely doctrinaire justice. Now, who knows what Bush'll nominate? The Republicans control the Senate and a more overtly right-wing nominee might well be confirmed.

Harriet Miers, having been Bush's attorney for the past ten years, clearly would have given Bush the ability to vote by proxy on the Supreme Court. This was the primary source of outrage by the Senate Judicial Committee followed by her lack of credentials. This showdown has sent a clear message to Bush and his insiders that this level of cronyism will not be tolerated.
