road.jpg The Post reports that John Paulus, the former green beret/hustler who claims he has evidence of a tryst with Clay Aiken contained on a DNA-stained cumrag, says he might re-enact the sexual encounter in a porn film. The story showed up recently in the National Enquirer and Paulus says he has been deluged by threats from the Claymates.

Fight1road.jpg Brad Pitt sees gold in Brokeback and is apparently on the look-out for a meaty gay role "in order to shed his lady killer image." According to the Sun: "Brad has asked his people to find him a script to play a gay man. He wants it to be a story that appeals to both men and women and he wants it to be the edgiest work he's done. He's seen the critical acclaim that ‘Brokeback Mountain’ has won and he wants a piece of it."

road.jpg Brent Hartinger at Big Gay Picture interviews Barry Sandler who wrote Making Love, the 1982 film starring Michael Ontkean and Harry Hamlin that featured one of the first positive cinematic portrayals of gay men. Here's what Sandler had to see about sitting through it with an audience for the first time: "So I went in the theater, 600 seats, packed, and the movie comes on. And gradually, the guys start to show physical affection. And you could hear waves of discomfort in the theater, as people started to fix on what was going on in the movie. Finally, there's the scene where the guys actually kiss. And it was like a bomb went off in the theater. There was a stream of people walking out. 'Oh, my God, what is this! I can't watch this, it's horrifying!'" Making Love comes out on DVD next week.

  1. I'm old enough to have seen MAKING LOVE in a movie theater. It was in Water Tower Place in Chicago. Those theatres are long gone but my memory of seeing the movie is unfortunately intact. There were a half dozen young black girls in the front row or close to it, and they laughed hysterically at any affection between the men that was shown on screen. It was very offensive. I don't know what kind of movie they thought they were seeing. Thankfully, 99% of the people going to see Brokeback know what they're going to, and in my 3 viewings of the film in the packed theatres they have all been very respectful.

  2. Can I ask why you chose to mention the girls were black, Ken?

    Posted by: Kia | Feb 1, 2006 9:50:12 AM

  3. Brad Pitt in a meaty gay role. Could this be when Patricia Nell Warren's "The Front Runner" finally makes it to the big screen? I once would have dreamed of him in the role as Billy, but now that Brad is in his 40s would he be perfect as the coach instead? I wonder if he's read the book?

  4. Meaty gay role - is that more or less bloodthirsty than a vampire who has been seduced by Tom Cruise?

    Posted by: Mike | Feb 1, 2006 10:02:27 AM

  5. In the film "Troy" Patroclus was changed from Achilles' lover to his cousin. Around that time I remember reading that Jennifer Anniston had counseled her husband not to take ANY gay roles. (She must not have liked "Interview With the Vampire" - and they only skirted around the issue in that one.) Now that he's shed her, he can shed some of those old inhibitions and stereotypes as well. I definitely get the feeling that Angelina Jolie would not only encourage him to take a gay role - but that she'd like to watch!

  6. Yeah Ken,

    Why did you mention that the girls were Black? If they had bn white, wd you have mentioned this? What does their race have to do with anything?

    Actually---I REALly don't give a FLYING FICK what your excuse going to be!

    ~~~~
    I had actually wanted to say that CLAY AIKEN's former partner wanting to re-enact their sexual encounter is a Really sad commentary. Why doesn't he just get a lawyer or bodyguard instead?
    ~~~

    But KEN's racial comments are sufficiently distracting. All day and all night, guys go on and ON and ONNNN about homophobia. You can't shut up about it.

    I have bn REBUTTING your RACIST comments LEFT and RIGHT. Apparently, comments about Black people are "okay".

    RACISM is acceptable but that homophobia is not.

    Ken, your comments are disgusting.

    Andy, why do you continue allowing this on your site?

    Posted by: Gilli | Feb 1, 2006 10:16:30 AM

  7. Wow, that seems like an over reaction ("racist", "disgusting"). Is any mention of race verbotten? I'm new to the site, so I don't know if Ken has a history. Is that the case?

    Posted by: billy | Feb 1, 2006 10:31:47 AM

  8. Billy,

    Over reaction? Yes, you're new. And, not Black.

    I notice you haven't provided a possible reason why Ken wd have mentioned the girls race.

    Do tell.

    Posted by: Gilli | Feb 1, 2006 10:42:47 AM

  9. Gilli. If Andy were to censor peoples comments then there would not be the great discussion that is found here. Please don't blame Andy for Ken's comments.

    Posted by: Donald | Feb 1, 2006 10:48:08 AM

  10. I see the fact that they were mentioned as black completely irrelevant and not a race issue. I don't see anyone jumping on Ken because he mentioned they were girls or that they were sitting in the front row. If the simple mention of race offends you then the problem seems to be yours and not his. If you feel comments should be censored start your own damn "racially grey" blog. ;)

    Posted by: Blue | Feb 1, 2006 11:16:57 AM

  11. Gilli, thank you for the kind welcome to a newbie. I must be on the anger blog. Why would you presume to know anything about my race? Do all black...pardon me...Black people think the same way? Couldn't a black person read Ken's post and see it merely as an attempt to describe the situation? All of this crying wolf about perceived racisim and homophobia only makes harder when these acts truly happen.

    Do tell (and get a freakin' grip).

    Posted by: billy | Feb 1, 2006 11:21:06 AM

  12. Donald, Blue,

    If there's nothing wrong with mentioning race in this context, then why don't you provide REASONS for it?

    If there's nothing wrong with mentioning race in general, WHY DON'T WE TALK ABOUT IT ALL THE TIME????

    This makes about as much sense as taking the word GAY out of the gay games. Why not just call a bunch of gays to participate instead of mentioning the word at all?

    Only people who don't undergo racial situations on a regular basis wd make your comments.

    Who's blaming Andy? I asked him about allowing it, I didn't blame him.

    STill, you've provided ZERO reasons for Ken's comments.

    Posted by: Gilli | Feb 1, 2006 11:23:06 AM

  13. Billy,

    If you can find one black person who isn't going to ask why race was mentioned, let me know.

    Posted by: Gilli | Feb 1, 2006 11:29:43 AM

  14. Gilli
    Please re-read my posting.... I did not say that there was nothing wrong. I agree with you. I think that Andy would like this to be as free a forum for discussion of the issues he presents. How far should we go in asking him to control comments? If I object to something someones says I am going to respond, I would not want him to limit what I have to say.

    Posted by: Donald | Feb 1, 2006 11:39:34 AM

  15. Actually I do mention race, gender, religion, sexual orientatation all the time when I describe people and tell stories.

    Ken didn't provide reason why he mention they were young or girls either.

    Further attention to your non-sense and pointless anger only seems counterproductive and not worth the time. I also find your comment about someone not being black offensive suggest discrimnation against non-blacks. Extinguishing racism and any other hate against a demographic starts with YOU and not by flaming others.

  16. Brad Pitt depicting a (hopefully realistic) gay character? Bring it on!

    Posted by: matt f. | Feb 1, 2006 12:22:36 PM

  17. Maybe Brad can play Clay's buddy in a Clay biopic

    Posted by: Donald | Feb 1, 2006 1:20:19 PM

  18. "Interview with a Vampire"... "Fight Club"... I guess there was not enough gay subtext.

    Perhaps Angilina is hot to watch some "man on man" action, and she is probably the one female on the planet that can actually make her fantacy a reality!

    Angilina... Brad... perhaps Ewan MacGregor... mmmmmm.....

    Posted by: Rad | Feb 1, 2006 1:26:58 PM

  19. Sorry, but there's something really cheesy in this Pitt ambition. As an actor, it never occurred to him before that a gay role might present interesting challenges? Oh - it has, but it just wasn't box office yet, now it is, and 'edgy' is just the ticket?

    What an ass. (Interpret howsoever you please.)

    Posted by: Jacko | Feb 1, 2006 2:16:10 PM

  20. ITA with you Jacko. How about picking a great role period, and not just because it is gay?

    But at the same time, you can't believe everything you read either. Pitt may have said shit all about it....

    Posted by: Lady Heather | Feb 1, 2006 3:37:38 PM

  21. Andy, you should know better than to quote the UK Sun! It's like quoting the National Enquirer in the US as a reliable source! Even the way it's written smacks of tabloid "sources say"...

    Posted by: JamesJ | Feb 1, 2006 3:47:46 PM

  22. To anyone who cares about the race issue. Race is still an issue, as is homophobia, that is going to be a reality for our life time. That said, I think that things are better than they were twenty years ago, and that my nephews and nieces are much better at this shit than our generation is, as they are with gay issues.

    The fact that ken's comments struck a cord with anyone is not a surprise to me. I am a gwm living in NYC who has dated many men of all colors. I have seen discrimination on both sides of the fences, towards them for being with me, and me with them, from both sides of the divide. I have always been attracked to darker men, even before I knew I was gay (age 13, he was latin)or that race was an issue.

    I recall a line I heard from the Rev. Jesse Jackson, that when he walked down the streets of Wash. D.C. at night, if he turned after hearing footsteps and saw white men, he was less nervous than if he saw black youths. Racist? Or is it a fact of urban crime? The truth is, like my favorite book To Kill A Mocking Bird, You can't judge a man until you walk a mile in his shoes, her shoes for the sisiters out there.

    I, like Morgan Freeman who recently said, I hope the day comes that we don't have to mention race, or sexual orientation. Thanks Andy for a great site that brings up this kind of conversation.

  23. >>If you can find one black person who isn't going to ask why race was mentioned, let me know.

    Thanks Gilli, for pointing out why a lot Black people have a hard time getting along with Whitey. Contentious, paranoid attitudes don't combine well with a misplaced sense of entitlement.

    Relief is on the way. Hispanic-Americans will soon outnumber both Afro-Americans and Euro-Americans. Then you'll have somebody new to blame for all your problems.

    intolerance = √

    insecurity = √
    some futile attempts at brightening up the mood = √

    Yep. everything seems to be normal. G' night gentelmen.

  25. here, here, remi - double that notion. as a regular reader of the blog, "gilli" appears to be a relatively new and absolutely locquacious poster. spurred on by the likes of a "jay croce", it's just like all those great Sunday morning political shows that blare point/counterpoint. it's more about ego than argument, predictable without wit and simply a bore. how about a simple "shut up and listen" as a way of getting more out of this blog than the constant need to see your own words onscreen, guys?
