Gay Kiss in Rockstar's Bully Getting Christian Conservatives Hot

The kissing boys in Rockstar's Bully video game have caught the attention of right wing Christian watchdog Jack Thompson, an attorney who spends his time crusading against violence and obscenity in media and entertainment.

Thompson wrote a letter to Take-Two Interactive, the game's maker: "It is my legal opinion that the sale of this game to minors, which is presently occurring at your stores in Florida, violates Florida’s “Sexual Material Harmful to Minors Statute”, Florida Statute 847.102. Each such sale to a minor constitutes a separate felony...I suggest strongly that all of you cease and desist all such sales in the United States immediately. Neither the game’s maker, Take-Two, nor the Entertainment Software Rating Board, told you of this homosexual content, which constitutes a fraudulent and deceptive trade practice, in my opinion, on their parts, and I have alerted the Federal Trade Commission to this."

Bully2Thompson also wrote a letter to Entertainment Software Review Board president Patricia Vance that said:

"Dear Ms. Vance, We just found gay sexual content in Bully, as Jimmy Hopkins makes out with another male student. Good luck with your 'Teen' rating now, Patty."

Unfortunately for Thompson, the ESRB had knowledge of the gay kisses before they assigned their rating, and "sexual themes" is clearly stated on the box.

Brenda Brathwaite, a professor at Savannah College of Art & Design and author of Sex in Video Games, commented to Reuters on the controversy and said, "gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or transgendered characters are 'more and more the norm' on television and that Rockstar is in the vanguard of game makers to include this type of content...It's symbolic that the diversity that's appearing in broader media is making its way to games in a way that's not insulting or necessarily sensationalistic."

According to gaming site Joystiq, Bully was the third-highest selling video game in the country last week.

  1. Amazing how Thompson calls it "Gay Sexual Content" -- I'm not sure the last time I thought of kissing as "Sexual Content" but it appears that he's unable to make that distinction.

  2. These fundies love to reduce us to sex acts. If we're not actively having sex, then we're not homosexual, or so they would have the world believe. Gay = sex. This is how they dehumanize us. They argue that there is no such thing as a homosexual or a gay person, there is only homosexual behavior, i.e., sex. They use the same argument to try to stop gay-straight alliances in high schools, by saying it's not approproate to have a sex club in a school. They have to dehumanize us to successfully argue that we shouldn't have equal rights and to spread their hate.

  4. Possible headlines:

    "Bully for Bully!"

    "Lawyer Bullies Bully!"

  5. Lordy. Some tell Thompson to get his Jesus out of my peanut butter. His fundie undies are in bundle over gay kissing in a video game. Shouldn't he be out feeding the poor or stoping the bloodshed in Iraq?

  6. Someone should ask Jack Thomson to explain why he gave the "Left Behind" video game his stamp of approval. Certainly you've heard of the "Left Behind" video game? It's the one where "good Christians" blow away "non-believers" with an Uzi, splattering their blood and guts all over the sidewalks in an orgy of grotesque violence. I guess excessive violence is okay but a little bit of gay lip locking will usher in the end of the world. Christians really do need to get their priorities figured out...

  7. He went on to add, "We wholly endorse family values friendly games... like 'Grand Theft Auto' and 'Scarface'"

  9. Thompson. Dear Old Jack Thompson.

He is, most unfortunately, very, very well known to us in South Florida.

I'll spare you a narrative that could go on for pages of the exploits of this very sick man over the last twenty years, but I do find it ironic that he is challenging a game with the title of "Bully."

Because as anyone who knows of this christo-fundamentalist legal terrorist, that is exactly what Mr. Thompson is.

He is a washed-up attorney, who lives off his wife's income primarly, operates his law "office" out of a mail drop in Coral Gables and has spent the better part of the last twnety years pushing his own little fundie right wing jihad against anyone who doesn't march within his very narrow definition of what is appropriate and acceptable.

He is a very ill man who has caused untold evil and hurt to many good, creative, and progressive people and causes. He does this by filing reams upon reams of litigation and action against everyone whom he elects to target over the most specious matters that ultimately all get thrown out of court.

He's a racist, a bigot and an avowed homophobe - with gays being an especially favorite target during the last two decades.

He is a truly sick, sick little man.

  11. OK...let me get this straight...a same sex kiss = violence, Um-kay.

  12. Calling Jack Thomson a Fundie is like calling fred phelps a christian. He's just a twisted little man that is way to caught up in his own god complex. He's been a thorn in the side of gamers for a long long time and you can find reams about him on Wiki

  13. How cool is that kiss (well all of them) and the other characters just walk past like it's an everyday occurance. Sweet game play.

  14. I'm not surprised by this bullshit regarding the game. After all, these same fundies blame violence on computer games as well. So now they have a new complaint. Gay characters in computer games are gonna cause younger game players to become gay. Oh if was only that easy. Then, all of the gays who really wish to be straight could play games that show macho woman-beating heteros and become their straight ideal. What a fucking great discovery.

  16. Whoa, so he doesn't mind about all the violence in the game, but one kiss gets him all riled up? What a moron.
