Sportrait: Wayne Rooney

Rooney2 Rooney1

The England footballer is not everyone's cup of tea, but even when he's raging in red paint there's something adorably Hobbit about him. These shots are from yesterday and today in Zagreb where England played Croatia (and lost 2-0) in a European Championship qualifying match. Click to enlarge. One more shot after the jump...

  1. Wayne is a hottie. I sure wouldn't throw that out of bed!

  2. Hmm...I'd say more Shrek and less Hobbit and frankly neither have much appeal. Truth be known he has a mean streak and on the field is rather an unpredictable nutter. Good player but a bad role model. I predict a two pump jump and potential future wife beater.

  3. Yeah, Shrek is the usual comparison. I'd do him tho. Rooney, not Shrek...

  4. Well, with Dominic Monaghan growing a beard, I guess Roo will have to do.

  9. The guy is cute but I'm a bit concerned about mentality of his team's fans.

The story about the Croatian fans that formed a swastika in the stands at a match in Italy a few days ago is disturbing; especially after it was revealed that this kind of demonstration is not uncommon for soccer fans in eastern Europe.

  10. Unlike other sports, soccer and fascism go together all too easily so the Croatian thing is no surprise. UK football terraces were recruiting grounds for far right groups in the 70s and 80s. Something about the intense tribalism involved appeals to the basest thugs, unfortunately.

  11. I have to admit that nike ad with Wayne Rooney was nifty, but hey, as for jock beefcake, I'd take Lukas Podolski (of Germany) over Rooney anytime.

Plus: He and his teammate Schweinsteiger are sooo cute together:

  12. Of course people take Podolski, he's stereotypical eastern european gay porn-looking, and looks like he's about 22.

  13. No way to Lukas Podolski. Basically for ChrisNYC's reasons.

  14. Talk about Elfin Magic!

  15. Podolski's 21 actually. But I have to admit, I'm biased after watching "Deutschland - Ein Sommermärchen" in the cinema. It's a documentary about the German team at the soccer world cup. It has LOTS of nice scenes with Podolski in his briefs, Lehmann under the shower etc... :).

  16. Well...Shrek Rooney let us Brits down with World Cup and yesterday's CRAP game against Croatia. He's an inconsistent player on a team that scores OWN goals.

I'm keeping my eyes now on the Welsh team.
