Fred Phelps Not Throwing a Baby Shower for the Cheneys

BabypicHater Fred Phelps isn't too happy that Mary Cheney and her partner Heather Poe had a baby. Or perhaps he just has a burning need to use the word "irrefragable" again. For those of you interested in hearing Phelps' burning message of hate, check it out after the jump...

And AmericaBlog today noted that the White House, in captioning the Dick and Lynne Cheney grandparent photo by which Phelps is so mesmerized, recognized two unmarried lesbians as "parents" of the child:

"Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne Cheney, welcomed their sixth grandchild, Samuel David Cheney, Wednesday, May 23, 2007. He weighed 8 lbs., 6 oz and was born at 9:46 a.m. at Sibley Hospital in Washington, D.C. His parents are the Cheneys’ daughter Mary, and her partner, Heather Poe. White House photo by David Bohrer."

  1. And as someone noted, the next time someone brings up the fact that his dear little Mary is a lesbian and Dickie has a conniption (if only)....this little stunt on the White House website should allow the interviewer to tell Cheney to go eff himself.

  2. Listening to his rant, I don't think I've ever read, heard or seen a more closeted person. This pathetic, sick f-ck desperately wants to suck d-ck but loathes himself for that desire. Or maybe he's just a loon. Probably both.

  3. Wow - Andy, you really seem to like giving this guy a pulpit. I just can't understand why.

  4. Thank you Andy!!! It has been TWO WHOLE DAYS since you mentioned Fred Phelps on your site!!! You are well on your way to winning a Pulitzer Prize for your in-depth and unparalleled reporting on this merry band of twenty-some odd family members who bear little if any bearing on the larger picture facing gay men and women today.

My only point is that I am somewhat surprised that you provide so much coverage on this one person when I think most people would agree that he is very incidental to the forces opposing gay rights today. Why is your coverage on Fred Phelps almost equal your coverage for the Republican candidates for president? Really quite strange.

  5. Sometimes I think I can be hateful and bitter, but JESUS. This man is nothing less than the true definition of misery. Thank God I can at least experience moments of joy. This man has just lost his mind.

  6. Addendum from Tony: I got a lot of grief from other guys commenting on this site for chastising Andy for providing so much exposure for Fred Phelps BUT I did notice that Gregg (who commented immediately before me) made the same point: Andy is TRIVIALIZING the fight for gay rights by providing so much exposure for this clown Phelps. It really bothers me because everything else is so excellent about this site.

  7. That was pretty funny! "An abomination ON TOP of an abomination!..." LOL! And, boy, did a lot of what he said resonate with comments made about the Cheneys here on TR! Remove the religious commentary and you might find exact matches. He even managed to outdo Leland with uncovering Cheney hypocrisy. I may want to check out that Lynne Cheney book too.

  8. The only "power" this idiot has is that he's so outrageous that he's entertaining/scary.

I wish the media could ignore him, but the media also needs pageviews and ad dollars.

  9. I do understand some of the criticism here. It's sometimes tough to hear these words, even when they come from someone like Phelps.

But I personally think it's good that Andy keeps covering Phelps. And in particular, I think it's good that he keeps using Phelps' actual words. The more his words are spread, the more rejection there is of religious zealots gaining power in this country. So I encourage Andy to keep sharing with us this man's words. It's a strong reminder of the power of twisted religion.

  10. While I also wish that the coverage of the "fing" Phelps hate group would simply go away, the fact is - they are not. They also, unfortunately, represent a portion of the public that thinks as they do. As gays, we can not simply ignore this, and hope it goes away. The hate/errors/bigotry needs to be continually pointed out.

The more Phelp's "messages" are exposed for what they are - the fewer people there will be who will "follow" along.

And Alan - it's not just twisted religion, it's any and all twisted thinking ... which is not only reserved for the religious.

  11. I implore all the bloggers to stop giving this maniac the coverage he so desperately wants... we're talking about a ministry that has less than a hundred parishioners, yet everytime he says something everyone covers it... ignore him and he'll fade into obscurity.

  12. That cracked me up. Like SNL cracked me up. He is his own caricature. He will die soon and he can have some fun ass fucking with jerry Falwell!!

But I do agree with the others that it is odd he gets so much attention from you Andy. Seems like one mention would be enough.

  13. I love it! The nitwits that believe in an invisible god who lives in the sky are fighting about who's the most dillusional.

  14. once again being suprised that 'bible thumpers" hate each other and are hypocritical is like saying place with high muslim population just had violence and being suprised. Once again have you been to church no one is more hypocrtical and irrational than "god's people".THose with most faults can "find' others

  15. Several of you wonder why we pay attention to this delusional nutbag...Well, for one his insanity allows him to speak freely and there are many other delusional followers out there who follow him...just like they did Falwell, like they still do Pat Robertson. He is not "fringe" in many areas of the country...he IS many areas of the country, or at least how a lot of them think...To avoid being bitten by the snake, you have to keep your eye on it.

  16. Yes, I agree. Kissy-poo photos are bringing God's wrath on us. They must be stopped.

  18. Helping Phelps become mainstream allows less virulent bigots to say that their opposition to gay marriage is not an extreme position--"Hey, I don't think we should KILL gays, they just shouldn't have equal rights!"

    Posted by: jmg | May 29, 2007 8:46:39 PM

  19. JMG - absolutely! That's my problem with giving him so much attention.

And DP - Phelps does not actually have many followers. How many people attend his protests? It's usually just his family. Don't give the guy more power than he actually has. He's a publicity whore who, as JMG rightly points out, makes other homophobes look rational.
