Fire Breaks Out at Micky's Bar in West Hollywood

Mickys

The gay nightclub Micky's on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood erupted into flames late Tuesday afternoon, ABC7 reports...

"The flames from the blaze shot through the two story building's roof. Firefighters were on the roof of the building to battle the flames. One person was rescued from the second floor after the fire broke out. Fire officials say this is an older building and the stability of the rooftop is an issue for firefighters."

Neither of the adjacent businesses were reportedly damaged during the fire.

Below, Micky's ironic 2007 Pride float.

I hope everyone is safe. That said, good riddance -- a lame bar.

this was the one club i never went to in LA.. my first weho club was rage (varsity every thurs) but for some reason i never went to mickys.
it wasnt until one of my trips back down to visit that i finally went and was like "eh"

anyway, it still is sad :-|

I've only been to WeHo once, but I tried to do a full tour that weekend. Isn't Micky's the one with about a 1:1 ratio of strippers to patrons? Half of the strippers were damn hot, too. I also recall that it didn't seem to have much else going for it.

Still... bummer, and I do hope no one was seriously hurt.

Gee, didn't Mickey's declare bankruptcy about as many times as they legally could? They sure were lucky it burned down when it did. Hmmm, what an odd coincidence...

I just came from the scene... Tons of Lookie-loo's, one queen started chanting, "The roof, the roof is on fire... let the mutha fucka burn..." he got a big laugh. Mickey's is pretty much the 'joke' bar of Weho and someone said to me, "Good riddance." And I said, "But that means all those nastys will infiltrate the other bars." He thought about it for a second and said, "Oh shit!" Looks like a goner. Anyway, reporting from the scene....

Lets keep the negative comments to yourselfs! There are people...good people including me who have just lost A job, Mickey's took good care of me and I am very sorry this happened, I am very glad everyone is ok and that it didn't happen at a point when there were more people there.

Posted by: Superjay | Aug 21, 2007 10:33:29 PM

Poor Micky's....scared another one away. I only wish I was there to light my cigarette of the flames that brought the dump down!

Posted by: firecracker | Aug 21, 2007 11:34:48 PM

Yeesh, you people...

Micky's is (or was) a great place to start your night with a couple beers, flirt with a couple strippers, then head off to the other hot spots. It's not flashy but I always had a decent time. I was there this afternoon watching the flames and smoke atop the building.

However, I fear for A Different Light bookstore, right next door to Micky's...

What a bunch of fucking nasty queens. So you didn't like the bar. Why do you have to gloat?

Posted by: Tom | Aug 22, 2007 1:05:07 AM

I lived in WeHo from 1997-2001 and I went to Mickey's from time to time. I hope everyone was OK and I hope Different Light bookstore was unharmed. Man, first I find out Revolver closed and now this?

Posted by: Jake | Aug 22, 2007 1:32:28 AM

I always hated Mickey's and the crowd that frequented it, but someone I know worked there for extra income. Now he'll have to look for work somewhere else to support himself. The comments of delight that the place burned are even more disgusting than Mickey's ever was.

Posted by: peterparker | Aug 22, 2007 2:10:19 AM

Actually, like many bars, it depended on the night. Some nights (Wednesdays and Sundays, when the promotor who does Thursdays at MJ's gets his hand on the joint) Mickey's was pretty great. Others it was tragic (Fridays are just terrible). That said, I don't get why such an innocuous bar get so much gleeful hatred. Save you hatred for the loathsome Boatslip in P-Town.

Posted by: Huntley Hancock | Aug 22, 2007 2:34:47 AM

wow, when i checked the gay box on my application for life, i didn't realize that i was also signing up for bitchy and heartless.

Posted by: nic | Aug 22, 2007 3:14:23 AM

Whether you liked it or not...why do you need to express such disrespect. Good people lost their jobs today! Most employed at Mickeys, like most in the service industry, work shift to shift to earn their income. Somebody was also injured in the fire today...can we think of the people in our community first rather than spew such hate.

Posted by: Jake | Aug 22, 2007 3:18:02 AM

If you didn't like Mickey's Bar, then you're too pampered boys! Visited it on holiday with partner in late 2000 [remember when all the shops around had t-shirts up for sale saying 'This is not my President'??]

Anyhow, we went to Mickey's one night, (and OK it wasn't the greatest compared to The Abbey) but we did feel a sense of accomplishment sitting there together ... gay men, WeHo, centre of the universe... or maybe it was the large Southern Comforts poured by a sweet barman?

Really sorry to hear the bar has been burnt out, it is a bit of local heritage that has been lost forever. Hope everyone working there is ok.

Posted by: Sean R | Aug 22, 2007 6:04:16 AM

Ach, people will always bitch to try to be witty. Are there plans to replace the burned-out shell?

Posted by: Howard | Aug 22, 2007 6:49:53 AM

Yes Howard, the owners stated on the 11:00 p.m. news in LA that they do intend to rebuild. The fire was an accident started in a rooftop air-conditioning unit which spread quickly throughout the second floor due to all the alcohol stored there. The building is listed as a total loss and will have to be completely rebuilt. It's remarkable that the fire department was able to prevent the fire from spreading to the East-West Bar next door to the east of Mickey's and the clothing store to the west. The LA County Fire Department, the LA City Fire Department and The Beverly Hills Fire Department are all to be commended for their extraordinary efforts to put the fire out and save the whole block of buildings from going up in flames and being destroyed by this fire...

The number of customers who went through the door on any night of the week (and that was seven nights a week--in a place with no parking!) would be the envy of most of the gay bars in the country. Obviously, not everyone disliked it...

Posted by: Gianpiero | Aug 22, 2007 10:25:13 AM

That's just a shame, the best bar in WH, the best one, great staff and a laid back attitude, none of that fake WH plastic, roided wanna be stuff. I hope they rebuild it and make it bigger and better than before.

Posted by: Sebastain | Aug 22, 2007 11:02:05 AM

Micky's, far from perfect, was a low-key destination in the heart of snotty WEHO. I hope they reopen and remain low-key. I can't take another Here, Eleven, East/West or Abbey. Sadly the staff will be out of work, many of them employed for a long time with the bar. By the way, is a Different Light okay?

Posted by: J | Aug 22, 2007 11:56:16 AM

Lordy, a gay bar burning certainly brings out the vemon in the boys. I live up the hill from Micky's and was coming down Santa Monica Blvd. when the fire erupted. And it was quick, and thankfully the fire station is also right up the hill, and the hot firemen were there quickly.

But why all the hatred for a beloved gay icon?

Posted by: Jeez boys calm down | Aug 22, 2007 12:38:36 PM

Rabid Christians and gay plagues may come and go but no one can stop the gay alcoholic academies from being reborn. Where else would young gays learn to have low self esteem and live down to gay stereo types?

Posted by: ggreen | Aug 22, 2007 1:00:23 PM

I thought Micky's was a fun place to meet friends and just hang out. Then again, none of us are label queens or in a K hole.

Jebus Cripes, GGREEN, take your paxil, and learn how to spell.

Posted by: nic | Aug 22, 2007 3:13:37 PM

Micky's was a great bar that didn't have all the pretense that's present at many other WEHO bars. I'd rather spend time with average gay men at $6 a drink than have to deal with all the attitude and drama at many of the above named bars and have to spend $10-$12 for a drink to pay for all the "shiny" things at those other places. I guess that's why you could find me there most Saturday nights.

Both businesses on either side are open Wednesday with minimal damage due to the prompt response by the firefighters. The building was retrofitted in the '90s, which probably helped save the adjoining buildings. The owner was the one person who had to be rescued by the firefighters and sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation; an air conditioning unit has been named as the preliminary point of origin of the fire, so it isn't likely that there was any criminal intent.

These queens that seem to gloat about what happen to Mickey's are mean and bitter!!! They probably are the ones who tried to hit on some of the hotties that go there and were blown off!! Just like the old Athletic Club. Those who always complained about what went on in the steam room were those who never got hit on! Mickey's was/is a great bar with a great group of regulars and super bartenders!!!Jason, Tony, Theron, Grant, and of course the fabulous Enrique!!!! I always made sure I was there when Enrique was working!!Enrique, if your reading this your TOPS!!!!! Glad you are all safe!!!! Hope to see Mickey's up and running in no time!!! Good luck to you all!!!!

Laura McCoy is a cunt

Posted by: nunu | Aug 24, 2007 3:11:25 AM

I was just informed by a friend that Mickey's suffered a fire. Like all clubs there ups and downs. Mickey's was one of the first places I went to when I came out. Some of us could go on about I remember when...but the people who have hate the place, so why did you go back? By the some of postings I forgot how shallow some of the thinking is back home. Just remember we go where we feel comfortable and some of us regardless of the place felt comfortable there. We were not just there to 'look' but to be with friends and have a good time. I look forward to its return, because it was a place I enjoyed because I was with my friends.

Posted by: Buddy | Aug 24, 2007 6:38:29 PM

Guys, Mickey's is not next door to A Different Light, so don't sweat it. ADL is next door to Rage.

Posted by: Geoff | Aug 30, 2007 8:24:51 AM

I liked Mickey's. Was there on their opening night and went back many many times. Can't say what it turned into since I moved from LA to Chicago back in the 90's. I'll always have fond memories of the water gun fights and dancing on Halloween. Hope the staff finds other positions and if the bar reopens, hope it is better than what it had apparently become. Now if you want the best bar in America, you need to come to Chicago and go to Side Tracks!

It's been over a month since the terrible fate of Micky's and I feel compelled to weigh in on this:

1. I will admit that inside Micky's was every bit as snobby and ridiculous as any gay bar in the neighborhood. Not an attractive quality, but...

2. ...Outside on the patio was another world entirely. I made great lifetime friends out there - it was an oasis in an often shallow, self-absorbed, nasty, bitchy neighborhood. People were friendly, if one can imagine.

3. Micky's will be missed. If you went there regularly and now want to trumpet to everyone about how you won't miss it, you're probably under 30 with an IQ to match.

4. If your cunning plan is to sound clever by trying to sound like an obnoxious bitch with all the depth of a light misting, DO try to spell everything in your postings correctly. And if you really want to reach for the stars, please consider grammatical correctness. You will probably be pleasantly surprised to find fewer of your casual acquaintances will assume you are visiting from a lower-end trailer park in some remote location. (Although if grammar and spelling are not important to you, it is likely that you belong in just such a location.)

5. Micky's will be back; hopefully all the half-wits who thought it would be impressive to trash the place in its darkest hour will be so committed to their lofty and idiotic twinky ideals they will no longer annoy the rest of us with their pointless, ignorant, dip-shit diva presence. One can only hope.

6. I hope by next spring to be sitting on Micky's patio with friends, watching the various locals stroll by with their dogs and their groceries and their significant others.

We, my friends and I, will likely be playing our silly and slightly inebriated game of "shag/wouldn't shag" based on ogling the unsuspecting passers-by and all the while hopefully enjoying the uniquely endearing atmosphere of Micky's.

Get it? If so, I'll see you there.

XOXOXO
