Not that I don't care for Tom Ford or his designs, he's very talented. But, this ad is pretty sad.
Might have been hot if there were both a female AND male hand on his torso..

Have you visited Tom Ford's site? it is an orgasmic experience (for straight horny men of course).

He's boring and tries way way too hard.
Also, this 'lifestyle' that he's trying to push -- it's aimed at GAY men, so why the straight handjob ads or the pefumed oiled vagina ads were released is beyond me.

It's interesting that of the fashion based magazines I subscribe to, NONE of the advertisements for his new cologne have a test strip included.
I suspect the bomb-sniffing dogs at the USPS were glad for the ommision.

Um, he's wearing a shirt with ruffles. She shoulda figured it out before she started pawing him.

"Also, this 'lifestyle' that he's trying to push -- it's aimed at GAY men, so why the straight handjob ads or the pefumed oiled vagina ads were released is beyond me."
Actually I think its aimed for Hedgefunders - some of whom are certainly gay but the vast majority are probably not hence the vaginal inclinations. In the next add he'll be doing a line off her ass : )

cocaine and bitches... i wouldn't want to smell like that.

That's not a woman's hand. It's a drag queen.
Seriously, why the hate-on for TF? He's selling cologne. He's obviously aiming for a hetero-male market, which is fine. It's just business.
Of course, none of my opinions on this are impacted by the fact that I have a huge crush on him. ;-)

Well, like all of Tom Ford's photos, it is really just way too posed, too calculated. He's got that same smug little smile that says, "I'm A-List, you're not." And that shirt that is always just open enough to show his ever so carefully arranged chest hair. See? See? See how BUTCH he is?
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

He IS really boring, isn't he? And his overemphasis on sex constantly is a turnoff unless you're a nympho. He's not realistic in the least with his concepts or ideas.
Anyone who knows fashion knows that Calvin Klein did sexual innuendo better and classier way back when (and more original).

His "lifestyle" marketing has always been aimed at a hetero demographic.
He's like a delusional Alfred Hitchcock, always injecting himself into his ad campaigns. He's not sexy at all, and makes the ads even more vulgar with his presense.

I tried the "scent" in Selfridges last week. It is redolent of the trash.

Gucci in the 90's was defintely the hotness but Ford hasn't found a way to move forward. Like Diane Von Furstenburg he is selling a hyper glam version of the hedonistic 70's but where as she has sucessfully repackaged the best parts of sexy from that era Ford's vision now just seems stale, contrived and pretentious. I think at this point only women and Russians find him truly sexy.
In truth he was over for me after his NY Times magazine cover story came out shortly after 9/11 and in which he rather vapidly suggested that if you really wanted to get back at the terrorist you would have that extra "piece of cake" - you would buy that luxury thisthatandtheother...
Admittedly, he was doing his bit to jump start the economy but it came across as crass, thoughtless and just plain gross - not unlike his new campaign.

This ad may look boring, but did you see the second half of it? Even gay guys gasped.
Posted by: MT | Sep 19, 2007 12:07:44 PM
As this ad attests, Tom to me has always seemed - oily. He seems like the kind of guy you'd wake up next to the day after having been plied with Quaaludes and coke (sooo, 70's, that Tom!) prompting you to quietly skulk out of his bed, into your clothes, and then skurry home for a long hot shower with a Brillo pad.

Giovanni, I'm a woman, and actually have some Russian heritage, and TRUST ME when I say that I do not find Tom Ford sexy.
Posted by: Lucy | Sep 19, 2007 12:22:43 PM
how very Bijan.
if this ad campaign is directed at hetero men then perhaps the text should feature the word "scent' instead of the flowery word "fragrance".

who needs anyone else - hand or otherwise - when there's always the camera to make love to?

"He's not realistic in the least with his concepts or ideas."
Realistic advertisement concepts/ideas?! What a truly hilarious thought. I'm weak.
Fact of the matter is, my darlings, he's bathing in dollars whilst we post waspish typos on the interweb.
Poor Tom, the laugh's on him, eh?

to answer CF, above, as to why Tom's pushing the gay lifestyle on straight men; it simple and historic. Men want to impress Women. Straight men will bend over backwards for women. Gay men will move on to the next new "thing" next year, (as we should) and tommy's rent on the new Atelier is still around 250K a month so he's gotta sell the skunk weed cologne to someone.
But you already knew that. Didn't cha?

"gay lifestyle"? *sigh* I'd have that internal homophobia checked out and fast!

Tom Ford is about as sexy as a thumbprint with eyeballs.
Hey Tom, Chanel beat you to it YEARS AGO! It was called "Egoiste"!
Posted by: FizziekruntNT | Sep 19, 2007 3:14:46 PM
Wow - there's a lot of jealous bitchery on here. Why such venom?
Posted by: Gregg | Sep 19, 2007 4:16:49 PM
Can't figure it out. Is this a fragrance ad or a Botox ad?
Posted by: Chas Miami | Sep 19, 2007 5:52:11 PM
oh I love Egoiste by Chanel, lets keep it out of this Haha
Posted by: Rafael | Sep 19, 2007 6:42:59 PM
Why all the haters? I agree it's ridiculous for him to use his visage AND include a woman's crotch/hand in the ad as he is a big HOMOSEXUAL. However, I see where he's going with the sale of his cologne because after smelling it what self-effacing gay man would wear it? NOT THIS ONE! I still think hes uber-sexy!
Posted by: Mateo | Sep 19, 2007 7:32:55 PM
Hot! He is the sexiest man alive.
Also, if that ad just featured a shirtless model you all would have just talked about his body, or complained the site only posts pics of white models. Nobody would have said anything about the hand.

I'm loving the reference to "The Women", that was a great movie. "Sydney's, Olga, jungle red... I'll remember!"

It reminds me of that old Denim fragrance ad, the one where the girl's hand snakes down the front of the man's open-necked shirt. In that ad the guy grabs the girl's hand before she gets too far. I was a naive young thing back then and hadn't figured the guy was probably gay and didn't want any female attention.
In this ad it looks like the girl/trannie might actually be giving him a handjob just out of shot. Tom looks totally bored whatever is going on.

Tom is just the most reviled kind of homosexual man to me. He is so aware of how "sexy" he is, he has lost sight that being sexy is not always cultivated, is just is. It's a sense of self, not money and bling ($800.00 solid gold sunglasses, scoff!). Tom, hear what we are saying to you. Stop being a snob. Remember we made you, bought your designs when they were fab for Gucci and we can stop buying the crap you are trying way to hard to sell now. Take a deep breath and get back to the basics and a less pretentious deeper sense of self.
