  1. I remember a time when GLAAD stood for Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. They spent their time educating and going after those who defamed. Not sitting at rubber chicken dinners patting each other on the back for what a great job they are doing.

They have come so far .... away from ther original roots.

  2. GLAAD seems more like a bunch of starf*ckers than activists.

But maybe they think that's the same thing in our celebrity-obsessed culture?

  3. I'm ashamed to admit I've heard of very few of the movies or series nominees, and seen even fewer.

But I think we DO need someone to honor those who support us in the media. I'm not saying it's perfect, or without controversy. But if you don't like it, start your own foundation and awards.

    Good for GLAAD.

  4. I think calling The War at Home a "comedy" ought to be a capital offense. That show was painfully unfunny.

  5. Decent list of nominees, but they should be ashamed of themselves for not giving special recognition awards to two TV shows that were truly groundbreaking

Dirty Sexy Money, yes nominated, but deserves special recognition for having a regularly featured trans character played by a trans actress

TORCHWOOD: WTF? a science fiction show (a genre that is notoriously not gay inclusive) featuring an out gay actor playing a ambisexual character. The "Capt Jack Harkness" episode featured the most most romantic (and hot with its sexual chemistry) same sex story ever seen in a TV show!!!

  6. I couldn't agree more with QJERSEY in regard to Torchwood, I live in England and while I don't particularly like or watch the show (though I'm not entirely immune to Mr Barrowman's evident charms,) it's surprising and gratifying that such a gay-friendly show (and a sci-fi one at that) is considered so uncontroversial in the UK as to be broadcast weekly on a terrestrial (free) channel at 9 pm - no doubt a few purse-lipped prudes and repressed ex-army officers from the Home Counties have expressed their disapproval to the relevant regulatory offices, but nothing like the fire-and brimstone campaigns that would have once engulfed such shows in the US even very recently (and maybe still do, I'm not sure) - if there's anyone to thank for normalising the portrayal of LGBT characters and issues in the US over the last 20 years, some credit surely has to go to GLAAD, even if the current directors are somewhat starstruck by glossy Hollywood-style awards ceremonies (do I take it that these ceremonies aren't endangered by your diverting Writers' Guild strike?)

Just a guess, but maybe British television shows are exempt from the judging selection?

But as for Torchwood, c'mon people, the effects and alien costumes are shoddy, the sets are tacky (Torchwood HQ) or drab (generic office-cum-spaceship-loading-bay), outside locations are risible (pokey Cardiff portrayed as bustling city?), the acting atrocious (including Cap'n Jack) and the storylines seemingly written by incoherent schoolboys dreaming about the hunky captain of the school rugby team - how can you people watch this?!? (Though admittedly, it's better than the egregious new incarnation of Dr Who - WTF?)

  7. Could someone seriously explain to me what the complaining about these nominees is about? Seems fine to me. Doesn't GLAAD do this and also continue to work for gay inclusion in the media? What is the problem?

  8. We are longtime fans of Towleroad, and now our names have been on Andy's page twice in one month. Does this mean that we have finally made it?

And mock the awards all you want, but we are floating on a queer cloud of happiness.

    xoxo

  9. GLAAD has not done anything to warrent the enormous amount of money it rakes in from it's annual starf**king event.
The studios and production companies throw money to an organization that then turns around and honors them in return and gay washes any real issues that may occurs with a obligatory "meeting" and then a never to be seen issue ad that may (mostly may not) run.
This organization was founded as an activist organization and now thrives as nothing more than gay payola.

    Money not well spent.

  10. GREAT LIST! I’m excited to see who will be at the ceremony! Also: the Media Awards are just one branch of GLAAD’s work. They do a lot of grass-roots work with local media outlets too. It’s a big organization, so it’s bound to reach all of us at some point!
