Simon Cowell Liked the Way David Hernandez 'Stripped it Down'

American Idol producer Ken Warwick told TV Guide that although he did not know of contestant David Hernandez' stripper past, it "won't make any difference" to his eligibility for the show.

Said Warwick: "The truth is, we're never judgmental about what people do to earn a living. They've got to put food in people's mouths. We've had strippers on the show before. Nikki McKibbon was one in [Season] 1. We're never judgmental about people who do things like that. If it were some sort of heavy porn, then maybe we'd have to take action. But certainly not on this...David Hernandez, whatever you say, is a nice guy. And he can sing. He's got a great voice. He deserves to be there, as far as I'm concerned...The thing is, at the end, the public will make the decision anyway. If there's a stretch of the public that thinks, "Oh, dear, he was a male stripper, so I'm not going to vote for him," then that's the luck of the draw. If the public doesn't like him, then they'll get rid of him."

Last night, you may not have heard what Simon Cowell murmured after Hernandez finished his rendition of "It's All Coming Back to Me Now".

Jabbed Cowell: "I liked the way you stripped it down."

  2. He wasn't that great last night, but he looked pretty hot. I did vote for him(i know i'm a dork), but i think he's gay and i'm gonna support. Archuleta has it all the way tho.

  3. He's in the bottom two on DialIdol. I guess America is less forgiving.

  4. David A. was smart to pick a song that reduced the fever around him somewhat. This is a long competition--gotta pace it right.

Jason Castro is reeeaallly pretty and I thought his rendition of Hallelujah was magical.

David Cook rocks and he got the A+ of the night.

I can't believe I'm so hooked on the stupid show this season, but Archie has captured my heart.

  5. Like Banji said, it doesn't matter unless you're Frenchie Davis!

  6. I smell LAWSUIT!!!!

  7. I bet Simon wanted to see him strip naked.

  8. Thank god...he wears too much clothing. That picture is going up on my blog :-)

I agree though. I'm thinking he might be in the bottom two. Plus, the song he sang was from 1996...weird.

  9. Why should it be a big deal if he had done porn? It is just as much of a job as stripping is. If its not illegal, I don't see why it should disqualify. All it shows is the prejudice against people who have starred in porn.

  10. Why should it make a difference had he done actual porn? It is also just a job, and a legal one, so what gives? All that shows is the prejudice against people who have starred in porn.

  11. Vanessa Williams posed for Penthouse and look at her now. Losing her Miss America crown to a scandal was the best thing that could have happened to her career. People rallied behind her and supported her after that, and hopefully, people will do the same for David if he's treated unfairly over this.

  12. Ok great job of not displaying my comment until after I reposted, figuring something had gone wrong, making me look like a dumbass. lol

  13. "American Idol" sould be entirely devoted to stripping. NONE of these people can sing for shit.

  14. ...IMO david cook did do the damn thing last night, he broke on through to the other side...also, david archuleta is so cute, fresh and talented, he's poised to take the world by storm, (whether he wins A.I. or not), but simon's critique WAS spot on, (people need to stop booing and listen to him sometimes), david a. should do something fun and young some of the time and not so old fashioned,(just an observation and NOT a harsh criticism), other than that he's an amazing kid...

    Posted by: yeahisaidit | Mar 5, 2008 11:18:17 AM

  15. David A. is certainly fresh, sweet, and bursting with talent, but make no mistake: this kid has serious inner-Diva. He LOVES the big drama numbers (make of that what you will, ahem). That said, I totally agree that he should pepper in some young 'n fun stuff. "Shop Around" was adorable--and hot.

    OK, I'll stop now.

  16. I'm not on the David Archuleta bandwagon... he is way too stagemomed for me.

BUT I read on some random blog that he performed Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" during Hollywood Week. That wasn't shown on TV. I would love to see his take on that.

    Posted by: crispy | Mar 5, 2008 12:09:32 PM

  17. Everyone loves David A., but David H. can really sing. I've been waiting for a good photo of his body...thanks Andy!

Hmmm...who do I pick in the office pool next week???

    Posted by: Philip | Mar 5, 2008 12:10:11 PM

  18. David had to know his past will haunt him and it really shouldn't matter. Unforch, the majority of voters are teenage girls and older women (who we know now don't always buy the CDs of the singers they helped win) so him winning is highly unlikely.

  19. It's nice to see the show be a little less hypocritical, but it sure makes you feel worse for Frenchie (although her career has been just fine since Idol).

Also, I followed the link to TMZ, and the video doesn't actually show Simon's "stripped it down" line.

  20. The question is did Idol discriminate against Frencie because she is a woman and the image of women in america is still wrapped up in puritanical BS or did the discriminate because she was Black or even because she was hefty. Hefty people aren't supposed to be sexual in america????

Or is it simpler than that. AI has a huge gay fan base and he roducers changed their policy o as to keep that fan base tuned in.

Idol definetly needs to answer why they had a double standard for frenchie.

    Posted by: jimmyoyo | Mar 5, 2008 1:14:44 PM

  21. Idol already has addressed the Frenchie double standard. She was kicked off because her titty pics were on a site marketed for men who like underage girls.

    Posted by: crispy | Mar 5, 2008 1:29:10 PM

  22. I didn't know that aspect crispy.

Did she market her photos on that site or did they end up there without her control?

Heck, I once posted a naked pic on a homepage I once had and then later it ended up on porn sites without my consent. Once you post anything on the net it ends up all over the place

    Posted by: jimmyboyo | Mar 5, 2008 1:56:05 PM

  23. Yeh, she knew about it. The site paid her to model. Although the twist is that she was 19 at the time the pics were taken, but the site's shtick was that they pass off the models as underage. Kinda like Sean Cody says its models are straight.

    Posted by: crispy | Mar 5, 2008 2:42:38 PM

  24. Ok

That does change things quite a bit.

    Posted by: Jimmyboyo | Mar 5, 2008 2:46:29 PM

  25. Crispy, that Sean Cody dig was hilarious, LOL!!!!
