  1. ENOUGH with the loving tributes to Russert. He was an enabler of the Bush administration's propaganda machine: http://mediamatters.org/issues_topics/tags/tim_russert

  2. So...how was Tim Russert a shill for the Bush Administration again?

While I think there was plenty of bullshit in his response (*cough*supportingtheFMA*cough*), I give Senator Smith props for putting a small crack in the GOP mold.

Again I find myself very proud of my candidate for POTUS, Barack Obama. McCain couldn't snatch my support away from him with the jaws of life.

  3. Obama shoveled sand into bags on saturday, hooked his website into direct donations to the red cross, and even offered his website as a comunications hub for flood victims and those looking for info.

Mccain said he and his wife were praying.

    Aye yae yae

1 is a leader and 1 is a repeat of bush ala katrina

  4. While I thank you for the link, JOHN, all it's showing me is that the people at Media Matters think he wasn't tough enough on the Republicans. As a long time fan of Tim and Meet The Press, I've seen him be equally puggish and tenacious with guests from either side of the aisle. Just because his toughness didn't satisfy Media Matters' bloodlust (that's a theme today, isn't it?) for the Republicans doesn't mean he was deferential to them. He was objective, he was fair, and he was a journalist of the finest caliber.

  5. CHAS, I said Russert was an enabler. Maggie Gallagher and Armstrong Williams were shills in that the Bush administration paid them to be propagandists. If you need proof that Russert enabled the Bush regime, simply access the URL I posted in my first comment above and voila!, there's 103 detailed examples for you. It's that easy!

    You're welcome.

Now that it is over, Gore endorses Obama. His trying to remain neutral and above the fray of the primary season is comendable.

  7. I DID access the URL you posted, JOHN. That's how I came to the conclusion I did in my comment. Judging from what I read, they believe he didn't do enough to stop the march to war. Fair criticism, I suppose, considering the responsibility we place on our journalists in this country. But have YOU ever actually watched the numerous interviews he did with administration officials? You'll probably disagree, but those were not softball, Barbara Walters-style questions he threw at them in my not-so-humble opinion.

Why don't you tell me what Tim SHOULD HAVE done instead of what he didn't do.

  8. On Gordon Smith -- I actually think that Andy's description got it backwards. I understood Smith to be comparing how Mormons were driven out into the desert for being polygamists in the 19th Century to the way modern Christians might again be persecuted if they refuse to follow state laws requiring recognition of gay marriage -- which is actually much more chilling.

  9. I've heard that the image of Tim Russert has appeared on a tortilla in Mexico, and that if you touch it, it will cure whatever ails you.

    Dial it back, MSM. Srsly.

  10. I agree with Carl. The response was vague, but it seemed to imply that he didn't want to return to the days when religious groups were persecuted for their beliefs on marriage.

Quite a brilliant reply though, since his tone and wording seemed to imply that he was actually sympathizing with gay people.

I found his comment that marriage is a religious institution that the government "accommodates" to be a good attack point for future arguments. Which religious beliefs get accommodated and which ones don't? Why do people married in a church still have to sign a state marriage license to be considered married? Why are atheists allowed to marry?

"Marriage" actually came before religion, if by marriage you mean a life-long commitment of two unrelated adults to care for and love each other. Marriage is simply the accommodation religion has made to the biological fact of pair bonding.

Much as I respect and admire the man and will miss him dearly, THAT was hilarious. Kudos.

  13. Tofer

    Can you please elaborate

  14. As much as I understand and appreciate what Senator Obama said in his Father's Day speech, I REALLY wish he would have saved it for the ONE day that is set aside to honor and praise good fathers.

For just once, it would be nice to hear a Father's Day sermon/speech that simply praised those fathers who are loving, mentoring, teaching, living as a good example to and busting their humps for their kids without the admonishing of fathers who aren't living up to their "duties".

In my thirteen years as a dedicated father, along with my partner (the other father), we have NEVER been to church on Father's Day where we didn't get to hear about how fathers were failing their families. I honestly feel that that is inappropriate and shameful.

Sadly, most good fathers just let this roll off their backs because they've come to expect it and don't feel that they as male parents deserve the same respect as mothers, no matter how good a parent they are.

This is supposed to be a day to celebrate good fathers but it always turns into a day where good fathers get to hear just how badly fathers are failing their families.

Can anyone imagine a Mother's Day sermon/speech where the speaker took the time to point out the mothers who aren't living up to their "duties" or who are being irresponsible parents? And yes, they exist by the hundreds of thousands.

This is the kind of myth and propaganda that leaves most people with the misperception that all mothers are perfect, loving, caring, selfless women who sacrifice ALL for the children while all fathers are (except for the millions of individuals with "special" dads who people tend to ignore) selfish, irresponsible, detached, absent or uninterested/uninvolved in their childrens' social, spiritual, physical, mental and financial welfare.

Just give fathers this one day where they are lifted up and celebrated. There are 364 days of the year where they can be scolded, beatin down, told where they're failing and "encouraged" to do better.

When you treat people like they're no good they'll go out of their way to prove you right.
