Producer Steve Bing Pledges $500K to Fight Prop. 8

Newad

Duplicating a pledge made by entrepreneur and political activist Jonathan Lewis two weeks ago, producer Steve Bing has promised $500,000 to the campaign against Proposition 8 in California, to be made if it's matched by other donors.

BingLewis made a similar pledge at the beginning of the month which campaign director Patrick Guerriero says has already been matched.

Bing's contribution is the largest from a non-LGBT individual, Variety reports: "Bing is one of the nation's top donors to Democratic and progressive causes. He's the top individual contributor to the 527 independent committees this cycle, having contributed more than $4.8 million, according to the Center for Responsive Politics."

The 'No on 8' is holding a fundraiser at the estate of Ron Burkle in Beverly Hills on Thursday at which Melissa Etheridge and Mary J Blige will perform.

  1. Thank you, thank you.. for shining the spotlight on "No on 8." This is vitally important. Check out Frank Selvaggi's piece on David Mixner's blog also...

  2. Thank you Mr Bing! The straight folks are doing more it seems than the "prominent" gay folks in Hollywood to stop this hate filled orgy by the so called Christians.

  3. The problem is the "yes on 8" ads are really scary to a lot of people even though their claims are wrong. One (the prince marrying a prince ad) even had my straight roommate concerned, I had to calm his fears. The "no on 8" ads need to counter the "yes" ads, explain why they are lies.

  4. The so-called Christians are really indulging in that 'hate-filled' orgy as you say Marc. It is truly sad to see people that spout 'love and acceptance' being so filled with rage and hate and bigotry. These people need to win me over again before I have even one shred of respect for them... and the responsibility lies with moderate Christians too... THEY need to stand up to these religious bullies. Otherwise I will merely believe it's one for all on their part. So, moderate, let's hear it from you!

  5. It's scary that the Yes on 8 campaign is picking up momentum. In just a couple of days, my neighborhoods have been covered with Yes on 8 lawn signs. I see NOTHING from No on 8. I'm beginning to wonder if the No campaign is well organized. HRC is supposed to be working on it - where is there presence? Where is the presence of anyone prominent? So many have given their support, but the campaign doesn't seem to bring this forward. Ellen finally agrees to do something - I'm thinking we need Oprah. It's very scary right now and if same sex marriage rights are denied in the state consitution, it will be difficult to get them back. This is our only chance.

  6. So, if its voted into law, it still can't be over-turned? The courts have no say in blatant discrimination? It is just amazing that the USA allows such hate to be enshrined into law based on people who believe in fairy tales and feel they are right and anyone who does not is wrong and doomed to a mythical place filled with heat.

If this is "democracy" at its best, give me communism.

  7. Going to contribute - but how to insure that my contribution will be applied to the matching $500k pledge?

  8. Thank you Mr Bing!

Resurrect (er, better get a more opaque user name than Resurrect dummy), nice try.

Trevor, have you been paying attention?

  9. Resurrect or Trevor - if I've unfairly called you out, just say thank you to the nice man!

  11. Thanks for that Bing! Please call Ellen now (or email her here: http://ellen.warnerbros.com/show/respond/?PlugID=10) and challenge her to put her money where her mouth is. One 30 second mousy video isn't enough.

  12. This fight won't be won by its LGBT supporters. The simple truth is that the majority of the populace identifies as being straight and for many this will be a non-issue. We need more straight supporters to speak out.

It's definitely Oprah we should all be pestering, not Ellen or Rosie. We need an Oprahbomb to drop.
