James Dobson Says Religious Right Losing Culture War

In a Focus on the Family farewell speech, James Dobson told his followers that the religious right is losing the culture wars.

Dobson "The battles that we fought in the 80's now, we were victorious in many of those conflicts with the culture...trying to defend the unborn child, trying to preserve the dignity of the family an the definition of marriage. We fought all those battles, but really it was a holding action."

He urged them not to give up:

"We are awash in evil and the battle is still to be waged. We are right now in the most discouraging period of that long conflict. Humanly speaking, we can say we have lost all those battles...Humanly speaking, we can say that we have lost all those battles, but God is in control and we are not going to give up now, right? The world has turned colder for the family in recent years and there is such hostility to anyone who holds to a faith and we're going to take the heat. But I have been assured by the board and by many of you that we're not going to cow, we're not going to be discouraged. We're going to continue to express the love for the Scripture and the principles that we find there and if we are made fools for Christ, that's okay too because our purpose is to serve him and that he be pleased."

Dobson announced he was stepping down as chairman of the organization in February.

  1. They are awash in Evil for sure. They bathe and wallow in it every day. I'm amused by the admission that the battle is lost, but God is in control. I guess God is a pretty weak General. I'm mean for a supposedly all powerful all knowing Deity to be defeated in the "Culture Wars" by, well, just ordinary people like us.

I think the exhortation to not give up, is really coded language for "please still send money". I'm also a little worried that as the frustration of these wingnuts grows so does the possiblity of violence.

  2. Wow. This broken, senile old fucker is just babbling now. How dare he opine on the state of the American family? He is a creature made of hate.

  3. They are losing because all they have to offer for ammunition are Lies, Hypocrisy and deceit! The American public is becoming more and more comfortable with their GLBTQ family members and friends and acquaintances! Fear mongering of GLBT folks is being replaced by loving them!

  5. He and his minions from the Right Wing speak in these terms when speaking of our rights:
War, conflicts, awash in evil, battle, discouraging, a colder world, hostility"! When we speak of Family cohesion, Love, being together for life, equality, equity of rights, fullness of citizenship, there is marked difference between their "Love" and ours!!

  8. Don't take comfort until all gay people have won their rights and these bigots have been squashed. We have a long way to go. Gay people have been to this point already and then lost their rights (California Prop 8, Russia 400 years ago same-sex relationships were open etc.) We have to always be vigilant.

  9. Dobson and Warren are rats abandoning a sinking ship. Good riddance!! Hopefully their brand of hate and hysteria will be overcome by tolerance and enlightenment. I share IAN's concern though, it seems as this perverse movement dies out there is a rise in antigay violence.

Hot? Cold? Make your mind up dear.

  11. I agree with every single comment above mine (hopefully by the time my comment posts no hateful, evil one has posted their venom). I've been saying A LOT on MANY blogs about the fact that many heterosexuals have family members, friends and neighbors who are GLBT and these wonderful heterosexual people consider them loved ones. They are tired of listening to these hate mongers who constantly spew LIES that are not even in the bible (at least not in mine, and I read the original Hebrew version), and their hatred and evil against a group of us that hasn't done anything whatsoever to deserve anything close to their venom. And don't get me started on their tirades about protecting marriage and the family! So, they're protecting the fact that they have the highest divorce rate in the country? Are they protecting their hateful children who gay bash and bully GLBT children in the schools? Are they trying to spare us? I'm glad that "man" feels his hateful group is losing the battle. The only battle they're losing is the one where they go out of their way to hate others. They find us on blogs (purposely scouring the blogs in search of us) in order to spew their hatred, evil and venom at us and our heterosexual friends and family who also comment on these blogs. America would be a much better place if the MAJORITY of people were tolerant of each other.

  12. I just love the way the wingnuts view it all. The "battles", the "culture war" etc. Seems the religious wingnuts view anything they disagree with as some type of adversarial confrontation. Unbelievable. When the gay rights issues are finally "won", what will be their next "war" on humanity? I can only imagine.

  13. I'm trying VERY HARD to think of one constitutional amendment passed in any state denying ANY religious group ANY civil right? Can any one out there think of just one?

"hostility to anyone who holds to a faith..." What is Dobson going on about?

  14. "Dignity of marriage"--DIGNITY? What does he know of it...oh, right, ask Larry Craig, David Vitter, Ted Haggard, the millions that get divorced. I guess that's their definition of 'marriage'. Jeezie Peets--what a right honorable tub of lard.

  15. Island Girly, I have said the same thing you have, and repeatedly. And people had better take notice because these Wing Nuts (as you so eloquently label them) WILL feel the need to go after some other group because they love to hate. They have to hate someone or else they're not happy.

  16. Let's be careful. Dobson is a sly and crafty creep and we can never let down our guard until we gays and lesbians are given our full equality and civil rights in this country. Look at the language of Dobson--negative, full of violent references, hostility. Look at what we talk about: love, family, honour, tradition, commitment, civility, humanity. This is the best way to combat those very, very negative evangie-fundies. Keep smiling but keep fighting. They will lose the battles AND the war for sure.

  17. Please don't misinterpret this evil man's message.

What you are mistaking as "Throwing in the towel" HIS people are hearing as "Circle the wagons" and a rallying cry.

This is their latest and greatest strategy; playing the poor, disadvantaged, discriminated against, David vs. Goliath, poor little Christian flock beaten down, dehumanized and demoralized by the liberals, feminists, atheists and the MASSIVE, all powerful homa-sek-shul agenda.

It's time to redouble our efforts if we want this fantasy to become reality.

  18. My parents recently divorced and moved out of our old house. In helping them pack, I went through the books on the bookshelves, making two piles: donate to Half Price Books or pack. I found three old James Dobson-authored books, and while my parents were distracted with other things, I took the Dobson books out to the back of the property, and threw them right into the middle of the big burn pile there.

  19. You can all say what you want but your still will have to answer to GOD one day. There is no escaping that so enjoy it now. You will be judged accordingly.

  20. BOB,

You are right! Focus on the Family & James Dobson, *will* certainly spend a lot of time in the hot place. They break the Ninth Commandment so often and so shamelessly (and all to scare their followers into donating cash) that I seriously doubt they'll ever get to Heaven.

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. (Exodus 20:16)
